On Fort Hood
First and foremost, thoughts and prayers to everyone associated with the Fort Hood tragedy.
On the Recent Election
What is the meaning of some Republican gains this past Tuesday? The answer is simple – nothing. One or two special Congressional races don’t change a thing. As we head into the first mid-term election, let us not forget that the opposing party made Congressional gains on the after the first two years of Presidents Reagan and Clinton.
On the Broadening GOP Tent
As GOP leader Michael Steele about broadening the party’s tent and acceptance of others, I want to know how he can accomplish that with statements like this.
Candidates who live in moderate to slightly liberal districts have got to walk a little bit carefully here, because you do not want to put yourself in a position where you’re crossing that line on conservative principles, fiscal principles, because we’ll come after you.
In the words of infamous orator Buggs Bunny, “What a maroon!”
On Interesting Local Hoops Connections
Cincinnati is fortunate to have two solid college basketball programs within its city limits – UC and Xavier. Interesting both head coaches are not only graduates of the school they coach, both worked their way up through the ranks at these schools, and both graduated from local high schools.
On Upcoming Handbells
Our handbell choir performs again this weekend. Unfortunately the tune doesn’t exist on YouTube, so here’s a lively audio recording of Fantasia on Forest Green. Don’t let the calm beginning fool you.
On the Upcoming Weekend
With the weekend upon us, in the words of Garrision Keilor “Be well, do good work and keep in touch.”
On the BCS
For those who haven’t seen the latest edition of the BCS Committee meeting from the Global Sports Fraternity.

Fort Hood:
I almost anticipate the anti-muslim sentiments to start flying from certain corners pretty soon, but I hope they resist it. This guy may have been a mental healthcare professional, but that doesn’t exclude him from having mental issues. I’m glad the soliders who were graduating next door when this occurred acted so quickly.
Recent Election:
I congratulate the Republican in VA, because the Democrat deserved to lose. I would warn Republicans in NJ not to get their hopes up to hight and Democrats not to be discouraged, but awaken.
I would tell the Democrat in NY 23rd Congressional District to thank the Republicans for helping him get elected. In midst of all of the outside confusion from Newt Gingrich, Dick Army & Sarah Palin they basically allowed the Democrat to walk into a seat that hasn’t been filled by a Democrat since the Civil War. But I would warn him to not get comfortable, but get to work.
GOP Broadening their Tent:
I’ve absolutely given up on the GOP ever listening to reason. The more they continue to push everyone who isn’t extreme right away the more they are shrinking their political footprint in each election. The Democrats have to just maintain and get results in 2010 & 2012 then 2014 & 2016 we will see a smaller, weaker, regional and I’m sorry to say it, but a more Whiter political party going against a more diverse Democratic Party and rejuvenated Libertarian Party.
If I was a Republican I would be watching out more of the Libertarians than Democrats. The Dems is the enemy you know and comfortable with, the Libs are the enemy that looks like you and appear to act & think like you, but are quietly gaining power at GOP expense.
The Democrats may get some Moderate Republicans, but both parties should be more aware of what can happen. The GOP is shrinking fast and you can’t tell them much of anything. The Democrats may have grown, but it’s what they do now will determine how much of that growth is permanent and how much was for other reasons.
OH Hoops:
So I’ll go for them. (I’m not partial to them for religious reasons if anyone was thinking of that)
Not being from the buckeye state, but close by I don’t have a favorite when it comes to the two teams mention. But since I’m partial to Xavier for other reasons.
Hand bells:
So you’re musically inclined too. Didn’t know that.
Conclusion:
Excellent post as usual.
Tim,
Heck … your comment is a post in itself … THANKS … as for your excellent perspective.
I’ve been thinking about the Libertarians lately (not joining them, just thinking about them) … thus realize that they need both dollars, including special-interest), a solid message, and a face for the party. Not sure if they have any of those yet.
I’ve also been thinking about the war in the Democratic tent. Sure would be interesting if a 4-party system emerged! But that’s wishful thinking.
Thanks again …. and I hope all is well.
think it was a Larkin who got me into Xavier basketball
both them and UC seem to be excellent every year the past 2-3 decades
3rd Stone,
Byron Larkin (Barry’s brother) was a great player and has been a long-time analyst on their radio broadcast … and (not surprisingly) does well.
The UC-XU rivalry has always been interesting with the underdog winning its share. Hopefully UC is on the right track to returning to contention.

Frank your hand bell choir’s performance was beautiful. The music was crisp, clear and quite festive!
Elections: I agree with you. The Nov 3 elections didn’t really mean anything and have no reflection on what will happen in 2010. It would have been nice to get keep he D next to NJ and VA but it’s not critical.
I hope that the people who will be running in the various elections in 2010 already have a record that shows that they have the people’s best interest at heart and will not rely on Obama’s coat tails. Obama’s role is to come in and excite the base that is ALREADY committed to vote for the person running. He can rally people to go to the polls and vote but he can’t motivate people to vote for someone they don’t have faith in.
I think Deeds the VA candidate for Governor was a joke and had no chance of winning — how could the Democrats have selected him to run?
NJ was a harder pill to swallow because the Governor of NJ is one of the most powerful Governors in the country. But I also believe that Corzine is full of himself and didn’t do much while he had the position. Hopefully Chris Christie will do some good for the people of NJ.
Paulette,
Thanks for listening to the handbell piece. Unfortunately, that recording wasn’t us, but we did ok with it.
Lots of stuff going on within the electorate at this time. Dems losing NJ governorship wasn’t a surprise to me b/c NJ do elect GOP governors. Agree … Deeds was a joke in VA.
On the other hand, a lot will happen in the year to come regarding the midterm elections, so who knows. I still maintain that both parties are fractured and the electorate isn’t happy. Interestingly, the majority is still pulling for President Obama. To me, the question is how can be distance himself from the party’s image. Time will tell.
