  1. Marvelous post, Frank! I’m always intrigued by number posts, but I especially like your reference to the 36D song by Beautiful South – here’s a link to the song –

    Happy 36th! We’re almost to 40 :-)

  2. Actually, in regards to your mathematics, the square root of 36 isn’t 6. It’s ±6. I know it seems like a trite demarcation, but (as I explained in one of my blog posts seen here:http://www.debelit.com/2013/05/math-alert-yes-plus-and-minus-matters.html) it was the realization of the negative that helped us come up with the idea of antimatter and energy!

However, the rest of the post was rather clever and I really enjoyed reading all of the ways that 36 is in our lives. Great work!

    • Peter,
Many thanks for the correction. Just another example how accuracy is a casualty of generalizing! Meanwhile, I have edited the post. … and thanks for the link, which I followed!

  3. I was just about to switch off and go up to bed when your #36 caught my eye on the reader. Happy anniversary and Congratulations to you both.

I’m astonished and impressed at all the 36′s you found.

is it because I don’t know my bible very well that I don’t recognize the quote
“36 righteous people in every generation”

    • Kanerva,
Glad you caught the Finnish, and on the next one if I don’t work it in, please add it in the comments. Regarding Fasab, who knows where he digs up the constant stream of stuff! :)

  4. Congrats and I love all the info. Let’s just say I didn’t get a 36 on my ACT. This is my favorite fact: In the UK, a standard beer barrel is 36 UK gallons, about 163.7 liters.

  5. Frank … you’re FANTASTIC! What a world of information you have dug out. Love it … fantastic.
Congratulations to you both and I hope you will get another 36 years …

    • Mobius,
Many thanks …. I don’t have another one in the pipeline, so I’ll have to think of one. After all, I like the numbers that are linked to a personal significant event.

  6. Happy Anniversary! Love your fascinating take on the #36! You put a lot of research into this which speaks to your patience and loyalty for 36 years.
I enjoy numbers too…for example, I can always carry a calendar in my head by just identifying the day that the date is a multiple of 7…like this month that would be Tuesdays.

  7. Jeez, between you and FASAB, you’re gonna kill me with this numbers racket!
I’ll throw these two at ya. 36 is the state number of Nevada, which also happens to be the hull number of the World War 2 battleship that carried the state’s name (BB-36, USS Nevada). And the Convair B-36 is the only US plane ever built to both carry and be powered by nuclear technology – it was the last piston-engined US strategic bomber, needing additional jet engines when her own six propellers weren’t powerful enough to haul her around (4 jets were added, in two 2-engine underwing pods, giving birth to the phrase “6 turnin’ and 4 burnin’” to indicate all engines were working.) You can see a B-36 landing gear at your nearby USAF museum in Dayton, along with a “parasite’ fighter built to be carried aboard the plane as a close escort. (The XF-85 Goblin, truly the UGLIEST plane ever built! :D )
Okay, now, ENOUGH with the numbers! ;)

      • By the by, I seem to have a bad habit of this. Happy anniversary, belated. :D
Yes, you were easy on me, and I appreciate it. That’s why I wrote what I did – a nice double 36 with great symmetry.
I just wonder what the FBI thinks when they review my browser history. And trust me, they ARE reviewing it….. ;)

  8. Boy, getting a few mentions here. Thanks guys. But John, what about the famous 36th Ulster Division on the Western Front in WWI?
Good post Frank and congrats! :)

  9. Happy Anniversary Frank (and Mrs. A). You beat WW and me by 2 years. We discovered that marriage is better than anyone ever advertised and the best thing we ever did. Somehow I think you and Mrs. A. feel the same. Cheers!

  10. Thirty-six years of marriage is a marvelous milestone! Wonderful, Frank, and continued blessings to you both. I cannot imagine compiling this much data on number 36! I am completely impressed. You have a lot of interesting facts here! I hope I can retain a few of them. :-)

  11. Fascinating. I think I’d like to travel US Route 36 from Ohio to Rocky Mountain National Park. Bet there’s lots of great scenery along the way.
Happy Anniversary! 36 is a very good number. (M and I celebrated 36 last year.)

  12. Congratulations on 36. My wife and I are approaching 28 years. Recently in a jewelry store, the clerk was stunned to hear of our number. Apparently, the ravages of our society really take their toll on couples. Have a Great Memorial Day. And I think the original intent was to honor the Union Civil War vets as some southern states would not recognize it for some time.

  13. Congratulations Frank and Mrs. Frank!! Here’s to 36+ more happy years together! How long did it take you to find this many important references to 36? This is a great collection, and most of them are new to me so I learned today. :D

    • Weebs,
Many thanks for the best wishes … and these types of posts aren’t as time consuming as one may imagine. Then again, they aren’t rushed together either. This is good stuff for those who enjoy Trivial Pursuit oriented factoids.

  14. Gee, Frank, I didn’t realize that I missed this post! Sorry about that. Happy belated anniversary to you and your wife. Thanks for making me realize that soon SNL will have its 40th anniversary.

  15. I hope that you had a WONDERFUL anniversary! You certainly outdid yourself on the 36 references…We are behind you by one year….always knew you must be a “steady and true” kind of guy…best wishes to you both !!

Comment with respect.
