Music has brought forth legends as Willie Nelson and Boxcar Willie, but the song Little Willy (by Sweet) was never a favorite of mine. Free Wily made it to the big screen while Groundskeeper Willie appears on The Simpsons – but the most famous may be Steamboat Willie who became famous with a different name.
While Wiarton Willie is the famous Canadian groundhog who prognosticates the weather. Willie the Wildcat serve as mascots at Northwestern and Kansas State. Ever received a wet willie, tasted Famous Willie’s BBQ, gotten the willies while watching a movie, or know what the British call willie? I didn’t realize that the SS Wily served as a Dutch cargo ship (1938-1939). But it wasn’t a floating chocolate factory nor captained by Willy Wonka.
Nonetheless, these Willies are about baseball … yes baseball – our timeless national pastime – so why not a quote from a non-Willie: “The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It’s been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and what could be again.” (James Earl Jones from Field of Dreams)
Similar to the All-time Mickeys, not that many Willies have made it to MLB, Nonetheless, this team boasts some offense – even the bench is stacked with notable All-Stars. Opponents will fear the heart of the batting order, but will be eager to bat against a shaky mound corps. Even though the Willies will play good defense, given their pitchers, they must rely on out-scoring other teams in high-scoring games. One thing for sure, they will distance themselves from the All-Time Randys who have difficulty fielding, hitting, and pitching.

Lester,
For not that many Willies playing in the bigs, this team is awesome. Thanks for visiting.

Aw, ya left out Willys, the company that made the first prototype of what would become the most iconic World War 2 vehicle, the 1/4 Ton Truck, General Purpose – the Jeep! (Yeah, I know it’s pronounced “Willis”, but hey, I gotta get my WW2 fix in somehow.) And a close runner-up, the infamous double Willie, Billy Dee Williams, our favourite governor of the Cloud City of Bespin. And yes, I realise neither has much to do directly with baseball.
But what about Willie Smith? Born February 11, 1939, died January 16, 2006, a left-handed pitcher for the Detroit Tigers (1963), and, after he converted to outfielder at the Major League Baseball level, an outfielder for the Los Angeles Angels/California Angels (1964-66), Cleveland Indians (1967-68), Chicago Cubs (1968-70) and Cincinnati Reds (1971). [Thanks to Wiki for the stats,] Too unremarkable stats, despite his journeyman career? (I just remembered the name from his Cubs days. You’d be amazed at what percolated through my consciousness, even though I wasn’t a dedicated fan.)
Hope the job’s not working you TOO hard! 😀

John,
I always count on you to mention a few more Willies! Regarding Willie Smith, although I don’t have my notes in front of me, it’s hard to imagine that I didn’t consider him.
The job is going ok .. but it’s taking me away from the blogs I love to visit each day! Thanks for asking.

The Say-Hey Kid is a class act, better yet, thanks for confirming it. I recall shaking hands with Johnny Bench – who wasn’t very big, but his hand engulfed mine! Thanks for sharing.

WILY MO PENA?!?!?!?!? I’m deeply saddened by the omission!!!!
I like that Willie Banks made it. I saw him pitch at a High School All-Star game at Yankee Stadium years back. He was so good I think he struck out the side on 7 pitches.

Keith,
If you recall, Wily Mo started his career in Cincinnati. He was interesting as he could hit it a long way WHEN he hit it. Cool that you saw a future big leaguer play in HS. Thanks for sharing.

Wily Mo’s return has been the highlight of the season for me so far. Such is the life of a Met fan!

Since the D-Backs optioned him back to AAA, I figure he was up only to be the DH in interleague games … which also means they were showcasing him for a potential trade. Thus he may be back!

wouldn’t have willie wilson or mcgee on the bench. they’re good enough to start at their positions.

RMV,
So you are going to start Wilson or McGee, so I have two questions. 1) Or is not good enough, which of the two gets the nod. 2) Which member of the Hall of Fame will you take out of the lineup? BTW – my lineups are statistically driven and are researched.

Bruce,
Welcome first-time commenter … and to one of the posts deep into the archives as well. With so few Willies in the game, that is quite the team. I’ve done 25+ of these, so if you are interested, I invite you to see the others. https://afrankangle.wordpress.com/category/sports/all-time-teams/

Oh, I will. These are fun. I grew up a Cubs fan, cheering for Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Ferguson Jenkins, et. al. When the Pirates or Giants were in town, their Willies always made us pay attention. Stargell and McCovey had the right field bleachers and Sheffield Avenue beyond in their sights every time they were at bat. Now, as a Giants fan, I still get a lot of chances to see and hear about McCovey and Mays.

Well, where does one start when remembering the damage that the Big Red Machine could cause to a young Cubs fan’s afternoon?
