Opinions in the Shorts: Vol. 108

On Politics
I don’t care about tomorrow’s GOP Ames Straw Poll. Simply put, the presidential campaign season is too long.

Sarah Palin said her arrival in New Hampshire on the same day Gov. Romney announced his candidacy was coincidental. Tomorrow, signs point to The Nincompoop’s coincidental arrival in Ames. Oops – it appears to be the same day Gov. Perry upstages all of them.

Is Jon Huntsman getting the cold shoulder because he refuses to play crazy?

News came out this week that President Obama’s re-election campaign plans to paint Gov. Romney as weird. Wow – I would have though his Massachusetts health care model, his worker-layoff record, and his waffling and flip-flopping would have been a better suggestion. Now that’s weird.

Not to my surprise, I’m unhappy with the Super Committee selections. Besides, Sen. Jon Kyl’s (R-AZ) selection goes against my pledge of no jackwagons.

Regarding the Super Committee, would it have been more interesting if the party leaders selected members from the other party? By the way, sequester them for a long weekend away from the press and any communication with the outside world.

Meanwhile, on the House side of Capitol Hill, I remind Speaker Boehner that it is Week 31 of the Boehner-led House without a jobs bill. To quote Speaker Boehner, “Where are the jobs?”

This weekend we our hosting our dinner group with a theme based around Food Network’s Chopped. Each couple received a basket of key ingredients to use for their course, and with the aid of their pantry, they will feed the rest of us. Here are the baskets. Should a future post report the results?

  • Appetizer: Shrimp, pretzels, dried cranberries, and kiwi
  • Soup/Salad: Dairy case crescent rolls, green grapes, tomatillos, and pork rinds
  • Entrée: Orange juice concentrate, beer, red wine, and ham hocks
  • Dessert: Egg whites, walnuts, hominy, and frozen waffles

  1. Politics – Too much. Pass.
Interesting Reads – Just have to get to a bookstore. That requires a 3-day round trip, minimum. 😀
Potpourri – Definitely, I want to see the creations. Not that I can cook, but the chemist in me is intrigued.
Interesting Headlines – A star giving rise to a heat wave? How about the anti-matter ring around the Earth? Or the ever-narrowing ring around the Higgs? I’d talk about research results in top quark formation asymmetry, but we might attract people looking for … OTHER things. 😉
    Have a good weekend!

  2. Also you can see the how Hypocritical the Republicans and Fox News is, They are having debates and you need to be polling around 2% to be in the debate, Rick Santorun who is less than 1% is in but FRED KARGER who is at 2% in some polls that Fox News uses is not in. The reason is Fred Karger is openly gay and you know they do not want him challenging any of the Tea Party.

  3. I want to sign the “no jackwagons” pledge – its the first worthy pledge I have heard of since the “pledge to end all pledges”.

Nor surprisingly the “Super Committee” is Super Disappointing. A group with only 1 woman, and 2 minorities are charged with making decisions that will largely affect women and minorities. In the words of C3PO — “We’re Doomed.

Any dessert involving Frozen Waffles is a WIN! Do post results/experiences.

Yay for your shoulder making it through its first golf test.

    • Beagz,
As you well recognize, pledges limit options and may even box a decision maker into a corner. I too wondered why only one woman of the committee.
I can tell you the dessert was a winner! Thanks for stopping by.

    • Hellooooo Nonnnnnie. Glad you like my idea about picking the committee. Simply another common sense approach toward progress. Just returned from hitting 40 golf balls, 10 each with short iron clubs (up to an 8). Progress, yes, but I sense some caution when I get to the longer clubs. Have a good weekend!

Chopped is one of the few Food Network shows I’ll watch. Please post the results. Especially the entree. That looks like a trainwreck waiting to happen. Hahaha

And no one likes John Huntsman because he’s actually normal.

    • Spinny,
We have the entree, and believe me, our practice produced fabulous results! … and I’ll write a post about the results … and with pictures (if I remember to take them). Thanks for commenting.

  5. Thanks for including the USA Today article on changing demographics in the U.S. It makes me even more wary of political candidates who promise to make decisions based upon 1950’s era “Common Sense.”
