Opinions in the Shorts: Vol. 158

On Politics
I’ll take “No” to watching the VP debate.

Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) recently stated that Earth is 9,000 years old, creation happened in six days, and “All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior.” He can believe whatever he wants and can serve in Congress; but why is he a member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology?

Here’s some advice for election debate watchers. Beware of giving the speaker too much credit for conviction in the answer. After all, it may be loaded with inaccuracies. Last week I provided links to four fact-checking articles regarding the first debate. They are very good reads.

I’m looking forward to the end of this election. Besides campaign 2016 just around the corner, although it is nauseating listening to politicians and their limited information, it is more frustrating hearing statements by voters who are clueless due to their bias, lack of knowledge, or both.

A CEO sending an email to his employees saying he will layoff personnel if the election goes a certain way is another prime example of this disgusting election.

  1. Thanks for the shoutout, Frank! I just saw the news about that eyeball and now I’m sad for whatever poor creature lost it. I also vote NO on watching the debate, although Mr. Weebles tuned in to a bit of it. And Paul Broun should be banished from politics with that sort of medieval garbage he’s spouting.

Also, I like ginger ale too, it’s hard to find good ones. I will have to try these. From now on I’m just going to consider you as my Beverage Guru.

    • Weebs,
Hooray for another person purposefully not watching the debate! Meanwhile, Rep Broun simply causes me to shake my head.

Me as you beverage guru? Oh my … I honored. Then again, I know we both love red wines and ginger ale! How about port? Limoncello? BTW – more ginger ale notes coming in the future because this store offered many brands.

PS: I have to stay around the house today because of a wine delivery that I have to sign for. 🙂 Thanks for commenting.

      • You already provided your limoncello recipe, which I still have to make, but I’m pretty sure it will be tons better than the bottled stuff. Port is a drink I’m not very familiar with, I’ve only had sips of it here and there. Looking forward to your next reports!

        • Weebs,
I thought so about limoncello, but wasn’t sure. BTW – small bottles are good holiday gifts. Ports are wonderful after dinner … and with many desserts. Meanwhile, how to report on more ginger drinks next week.

  2. It sounds like the election campaign is turning nasty. Whenever it gets you down, just console yourself that the political situation in Australia is only worse. Did you hear this week that our Speaker has had to resign over lewd and vile text messages he sent regarding female genitalia? He was a political traitor who has fallen on his own sword. But he’s still on full pay of course. If only our election was as soon as yours! xx

Sad to hear that US politicians don’t have the exclusive rights for falling on their own sword. BTW – I really do appreciate your Aussie politics updates! Thanks for sharing.

  3. I think I found the perfect substitute for the VP debates. I’m watching Jeff Dunham on Comedy Central. It’s the same premise – a bunch of dummies up on stage regurgitating someone else’s words – but these guys are FUNNY! 😉
While I like the idea of forcing Priebus back into his ancient box, can we modify the guy sitting in the dark to be doing so until the elections are over? 😀
Did you hear the doctor who cloned Dolly the sheep died? Guess that keeps us safe from the zombie sheep apocalypse, or something like that.

Woo hoo!!!! Another person skipping the debates out of disgust. Gotta love your adjustment to the Onion headline regarding the elections. 🙂 🙂 🙂 Meanwhile, I didn’t hear about the cloning doctor, but shouldn’t we now be worrying about the zombie sheep apocalypse? Thanks for commenting.

Cheers to you for not watching the debate! Regarding the ginger ale list, those were a couple of the ones at the store. Next time, I will be buying other brands – thus more reports are to come! 🙂 Thanks for visiting.

  4. I was disgusted by v.p. bidens demeanor and laughing. Really ..I think people who lost milatary family or Israel would really want to smack the crap off his face.Ryan so classy and respectful. Ya can’t wait for this fiasco to be done.

        • This is the thing. I don’t care Democrat or Republican. To watch any politician get up to debate and are so arrogant to think they don’t have to bother giving the American people a respectful debate with other the other candidate or feel they don’t need to explain anything in detail over terrorism is fowl and disgusting to me. Having watched both debates I can tell you (Obama and Biden both) were disrespectful to all American people by their demeanor. Again, don’t care what political party … I deserve more (as an American) and better from my President and V.P.

        • You are right, I don’t see anything positive about this administration. Has nothing to do with Democrat or Republican. I absolutely disagree with this Presidents ideology. I also dislike the direction the highest office has been taken un-professional (in my opinion) should make all Americans angry when our President and V.P are have no-interested, bored or laughing thru debates. Call me crazy but last I checked it is OUR white house (American people) and the administration reports to us the American people. 🙂 I don’t care if it was an Republican administration or Democrat behaving this way. I am embarrassed by it all. No worries you keeping me on my toes. I hope I keep others on their toes. 🙂

        • I happen to watch Justice Scalia on Pierce Morgan last night promoting his book about the constitution. So cool and interesting about the workings of the constitution I would say a huge percentage of people don’t understand the constitution or it’s original text. when asked the biggest blunder anyone brought in front of them he said “Al Gore forcing the issue of the Bush/Gore election. he said “not a wise thing to do and proven since after election by all Florida counties Bush still came out ahead.” But Gore forced an issue that the Supreme Court need not be involved. Very interesting interview. It gave me hope that our constitution will remain in tact.

He answered “100% NO in all his years he has never once believed that occurs regardless if in favor or against his interpretation.” Myself I am proud of our constitution and find it is deeply important to keep in tact and as original text. My belief…. 🙂

  5. It seems appropriate, funnily enough, that the quote from Paul Broun would be included in a post with headlines from the Onion. The CDC “headline” had me choking on my coffee cause I was laughing so hard.

Even if the Republicans replaced Rep Broun on the committee (which I don’t think they would), I wonder what the odds are that the replacement either is a creationist, thinks they need to be a creationist, or choose to be a creationist because they don’t know. Thanks for commenting.

  6. First, thanks for the mention in “Interesting Reads”. Appreciate it.

Re the Onions, I think my winner probably is “David Blaine Stunt to Push Public’s endurance to Limit”, although I’m not sure if this shouldn’t be past tense as my limit has already been reached with these stunts.
I also liked “Millions of Excited Americans Gather to Watch Series of Short, Elaborate, Rehearsed Speeches” and I’m with John on “Area Man sitting quietly in Darkened Bedroom until the elections are over”.

Re the VP debate, I didn’t watch it either but I saw some polls afterwards which showed Biden ahead of Ryan, who was ahead of Biden, and they both were behind each other. So you know what that means. Do you? I don’t.

You can argue with buffoons and too many people who want to argue politics are buffoons (on both sides of the political aisle).” Thanks for commenting.

you have my sympathies for the reds. i’ll be biting my nails tonight watching baseball in the bronx.

i don’t know if it’s fair to call the election disgusting as much as the participants. i think our population is becoming less educated, thus more tolerant and appreciative of mud-slinging followed by the denial of slinging while the mud is still wet on our hands. if someone we like says the sky is green, we’re willing to accept it. that’s sad.

  12. The headlines were slightly nuanced compared to most weeks, Frank. Maybe that’s the mood of the country. I listened to the whole debate while alone driving in the car…so no visuals or distractions. It was entertaining…which as a statement in itself, brings me pain to say. The truest statement said is that “it is more frustrating hearing statements by voters who are clueless due to their bias, lack of knowledge, or both.” I’m growing wearier by the day. I look forward to reading your links, Frank. Hope you have a wonderful weekend…and I am indeed sorry about your Reds. We have a friendly rivalry with my cousin in Northern California. 13. Sounds to me like a lot of people would just like to get this election over with. I understand, especially with the polls so close and the stakes so high. I tend to agree with MSNBC pundit Chris Matthews’ view that historically the American political system, as created by the U.S. Constitution and practiced by our two party system, has never been particularly bi-partisan, but in reality boils down to a winner take all affair. I’m very nervous about what could happen to the direction of our country as a result of Nov. 6, and I join the athletes, musicians, actors, students, and presenters who in the past have sweated it out before a big game, performance, academic test, or business sales meeting.
