Opinions in the Shorts: Vol. 167

Celebrating the End of the World as if it is just another day … and before anyone says, “Oh crap – why didn’t I listen?”

On Politics
I’ve got the feeling that we will see the nomination of the first female for Secretary of Defense.

On the fiscal cliff: I really believe that if it was only up to Speaker Boehner (R-OH), he would reach a deal. Although I’m not convinced that Democrats get it, it is obvious that many Republican don’t – so in response, it may be time to consider selling all mutual funds with stocks.

In my opinion, passing an assault weapons ban would be slam-dunk for pragmatist of both sides of the aisle. Maybe I’ve given one reason why it won’t happen.

Hello? Is anyone home?

In light of the recent Connecticut shootings, here a collection of moments to restore faith in humanity

Interestingly, after last year’s unusual physical snafu, the Cincinnati-Xavier annual college basketball rivalry game was the feature sports article in Wednesday’s USA Today. ESPN also rolled into town to broadcast the game between the two schools separated by 3.5 miles – thus the hype was high – and all the nation got was what Cincinnatians expected – a hard-fought rivalry game that included good sportsmanship.

Don’t forget Friday’s the End-of-the World Party at Aqua Tom’s. Tell him I sent you.

In lieu of Monday Morning Entertainment, my Christmas Eve party will start around 8 pm on Sunday, 23 Dec, a special start for the Aussies; plus allowing early morning visits from Europe and the Mediterranean region.

I will have a Saturday post, but instead of a cartoon classic, it will be one of historical significance.

Here’s an interesting audio version (and not easy) of a handbell arrangement of a well-known Christmas song that we’re playing. (The angels, Hark and Harold)

To send you into the weekend, enjoy handbell video below is another one we’re playing for the season: Gloria Hodie (Glory Today). Many techniques going on in this one.

Have a good weekend! In the words of Garrison Keillor, Be well, do good work, and keep in touch – and hope to see you at the party!

  1. Hey – your Saturday post better not be about anything WW2, bub. I’m warnin’ ya! 😉
I thought it was Hark, the Herald Angel. You know, the Angel who gets the morning paper, the Herald. 😀
You realise you DID forget to mention, on all of your future plans, “assuming we are all still here”. Gotta be careful – them sneaky Mayans might get one past the batter!
    Happy Friday! 🙂

    • John,
LOL .. glad to know that the handbell title caused you to raise the question. 😉 Regarding future plans, if we’re not here, there’s no need to worry. Meanwhile, and sorry to disappoint, my Saturday post is not about WW II.

BTW – did you see that Boehner’s Plan B was pulled from the House floor because they didn’t have enough votes. Their vote for Speaker in early January could be interesting. Thanks for commenting.

      • Hey, no problem on Saturday’s post, just wanted to make sure we weren’t treading on each other’s feet!
Personally, I’m waiting for the Republicans to throw together an annulment (or repeal, or whatever) of the whole Simpson-Bowles Act. If you make the cliff disappear, you fixed it, right? (AAAANNNNHHH!! Try again, elephant boys! 😉 )
The next 24 hours is gonna be interesting, and NOTHING to do with the Mayans. We got a mother of a storm coming in. (Winter Storm Draco, according to the Weather Channel. Yeah – they’ve started naming winter storms. Guess they haven’t been busy enough, eh?) So if you don’t hear from me tomorrow, I’m just digging out. Or in. Or something. No worries, we got plenty of food, water, and wood, so let Mother Nature … well, be a mother! 😀

        • Republicans have great logic. I just a GOP member say that their vote (nonvote of last night) was because they know what the economy needs —- and saying this on a day when the market is forecasted to tank. Meanwhile, stay warm up there!

  2. Hi,
Oh there are some good one’s today. 😀

“Mercury’s winter proves planet could support intergalactic space prison”
Now that is a fantastic idea.

“Kim Jong-Un’s wife escapes North Korea in long-range missile”
Whatever it takes to get out of there.

“Dream of walking around with no pants in supermarket finally comes true”
Really, a very strange dream, still the supermarket may of done a roaring trade that day, or not. 😀

On another note, it is just on 2pm here and it is the 21st, no Zombies walking around, no brimstone, seems like just another hot summers day, and I was looking forward to a bit of excitement. Oh well there’s no doubt more warnings to come for the end of the world. 😀

  3. Hey Frank, good morning and Happy End of The World Day! Conditions are still calm down here in Texas, but of course not even the Apocalypse would dare ‘Mess with Texas’.

Some very good Onion headlines to choose from today. I like ‘Half-asleep man pauses 20 seconds between socks’. I’m pretty sure I know him and I’ve witnessed him doing this. 😉

  4. Interesting last comment, so you dream about Spiced walking round the supermarket without her pants too.
Changing the subject quickly, man and socks is the Onion winner for me – in fact I’ve done it.

  5. also, i have a good gold investment, so if stocks fall, that drives gold up. i was about to sell one-third of it last week to diversify it, but i waited too long. the positive talks drove stocks up, so the difference between selling last week and today would be losing about $350 on the amount i was going to sell. so i’ll wait and hope the talks get worse and i get my $350 back.

  6. I think I’ll choose “Relaxation tape can’t play any louder.” If you sit with that one a bit it takes on a variety of implications…I like it! 🙂 How did you find time to create so many wonderfully rich links this week, Frank! It may take me a while to read them, but I’m curious about many. Looking forward to the party. And your new photo banner is really a nice look!

    • Debra,
Ah yes … the relaxation tape to Breathe Lighter! 😉

Thanks for the kind words about the banner – which is fitting for the season. BTW – the gathering of the links is a week-long process as my eyes are watching for worthy gems. … Thanks for commenting.

      • I find it amazing in any other job (real world) when a project and deadline is due you stay until it is finished. If not completed I am sure most people would be fired. Our administration goes on Holiday break (not a thought in the world to complete the job they were all elected to do) and we say “Have some eggnog relax enjoy.”

  8. Actually, we were all safe as of 6:10 (or 6:11) am, Eastern time, this morning. So yeah – the Mayans hosed us. Actually, the twips who misinterpreted what the end of the Mayan calendar MEANT hosed us. So we’re good until something like 4772.
Assuming the Congress doesn’t pitch us all of a cliff…..
