On Closing 2012 with Shorts

With 2012 about to close, I could recap the year – but won’t – however, I’ll let The Onion provide satire’s version of recapping the year.

  • Lincoln helps show that politicians have always been selfish
  • Argo is interesting and about something I didn’t even know happened
  • Black Knight Rises (finally rented) is convoluted
  • The Kennedy Center Honors (TV), a must-see every year, was (as always) great
  • Missed seeing Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Guilt Trip, and Anna Karenina (Did you see any of these?)

Being Freshly Pressed on Christmas Eve has worn me out, thus kept me away from making my rounds. Given the holidays and weekends, I’ve remained on the FP’s front page for a week, which is longer than normal. Then again, I bring the swamped feeling upon myself by having a mantra to reply, reciprocate, and visit any and all – thus I’m ready to move on.

Soon, 2012 will be in the shadow of 2013. I draw the curtain to 2012 with this fitting video by Lindsey Stirling. For those going out to celebrate – enjoy yourself and be safe. To those staying in, enjoy the calm. To all, and in the words of Garrison Keillor, Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

  5. I will go to see Les Miserables even though I didn’t like the stage version. I can’t resist Hugh Jackman. Life of Pi is on the list too.
    I look forward to your 2013 posts….thank you for 2012….it has been fun.

  7. You know what, Frank. Number 5 is MY number. Seriously. I’m the fifth of five, from parents who were each the fifth child. And when I was a teenager and my father started a lecture (his 12 millionth) by saying, “Lease, we’ve had five children …” and proceeded to name them all (what didn’t he think I knew their names?) — I erupted in fury, “Why don’t you just give me a number!” I became affectionately known from there on as No. 5.

    You made my night!

  12. I loved The Onion booklist. Hilarious! Yes, being Freshly Pressed on Christmas Eve was quite a task. I can’t imagine trying to keep up with the replies. I want to see Argo and Lincoln. I thought we’d get to it this week, but we didn’t seem to have time. I did see Les Mis and loved it. I plan to see it again before it leaves the theater…need to get my fill!

  15. That’s right. You’ve been up at FP for a whole week. That would be kind of exhausting! I enjoyed the Onion report. No, I missed most movies this year. I hope to watch more in 2013! Happy New Year, Frank. I hope 2013 is everything you want it to be!

That Onion report was the BEST way to sum up 2012, if only to offset the monotony of all the other year end reviews that frankly blur together to me in a hash of “Ugh, do I have to hear about this again?” Thanks for posting it. I saw Lincoln — loved it so much I forgot it was directed by Spielberg, a guy whose films I usually loathe. The only downside was that night I dreamt I was fighting in the civil war and woke the next morning looking for my legs. I did see Guilt Trip at a screening i.e., for free. The price was right. Happy New Year Frank!

  17. Wow Frank I didn’t know you were FP with your Xmas Eve post! Congratulations my friend – you really deserved it – that post was fantastic!

    I’ve seen Lincoln, and Life of Pi, and an invitation to watch Les Miserables, and Anna Karenina at a friend who is a member of the director’s guild and gets screening copies.

      • I loved the book (which I read a long time ago) and I loved the movie.
        Mr F (who hasn’t read the book) didn’t like the movie.

        Its one of those movies that have to be seen in a theater on the big screen (that’s where we saw it).
        I was astonished when I read in the NY Times the following week that most of the scenes with the tiger were filmed with a computer generated tiger. I thought he was real!

        So is blogging any different now that you’ve been FP?

        • Thanks for your Life of Pi thoughts. Neither one of us read the book, so we’ll see if we make it … after all, the routine of the return to regular life starts on Wednesday. We saw Guilt Trip yesterday – a simply movie to end the year.

          Blogging has been different since FP several ways. 1) The demand of time – most of which is self inflicted because of my believe of replying and visiting newcomers … therefore I haven’t had a chance to write much. 2) Through what I do, I have tagged a few (but far from all) blogs that I want to revisit. 3) I haven’t had a chance to visit others as much, again, due to the self infliction.
