Opinions in the Shorts: Vol. 180

On Politics
Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) has introduced the High Quality Research Act. Do I seem like a person who trusts a Tea Party Republican from Texas trying to control National Science Foundation (NSF) funding?

This editorial cartoon explains so much.

I recently mentioned the increase of followers. Here is an interesting read about the issue. Thank you, Alex.

A few value California wine values from Wine Spectator

  • Red: Cameron Hughes Syrah (Lot 341 2010), Toad Hollow Merlot (Russian River 2009), Plungerhead Zinfandel (Lodi Old Vine 2011), Bogle Merlot (California 2010), Castle Rock Zinfandel (Lodi 2011)
  • Rose: Halter Ranch Rose (Paso Robles 2011)
  • White: Husch Chenin Blanc (Mendicino 2011), Bonterra Viognier (Mendicino 2011)

OUCH! Last year, the Cincinnati Reds had 11 players on the Disabled List (DL). This year, after one month of a six-month season, 7 Reds players have visited the DL.

There will be a Saturday Morning Cartoon feature this weekend.

To send you into the weekend, enjoy this musical montage tribute to the Marx Brothers. Have a good weekend! In the words of Garrison Keillor, Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

  1. Dick Cheney Vice Presidential Library opens in dark, sulfurous, underground cave — shouldn’t that be under a rock?

    And DAMN whiskey and beer.

  2. Gotta say, I LOVED the Cheney headline, too, Frank. That one is a bull’s eye. On the non-political front, I also liked:

Sparrow thinks it might have bird flu after puking seeds all morning

  3. I despise politics, so this will be fun.

Mitt Romney, down-and-out after illuminating trip through underground cave of Joe Biden, drops by to see enlarging Vice Presidential member lost somewhere in the Gobi Desert.

Obama opens family campaign for reinvasion of Presidential Bush.

Couple might have hard time using Applebee’s toilet at the same after puking on door.

  4. Obama orders reinvasion of Iraq after Secretary Kerry lost in Gobi Desert.

There are only two on your wine list I haven’t tried, I am going to my favorite store today to stock up our supply so I will have to see if they have them:
    Plungerhead Zinfandel
    Husch Chenin Blanc

Of course I am only allowed 1 glass at any given time, but that is enough to savor a good wine.

Aak, hairballs a cure for epilepsy I am so grossed out and happy we are beyond these cures. I will take my medicine in pill form thank you.

    • Val,
I just heard that headline as Breaking News on TV.

      i like Plungerhead!

Meanwhile, I too allow myself one glass of wine at a given time .. and then when it’s empty, I fill it up again.

  5. I love the congressional blockhead cartoon, Frank. Perfect! It’s becoming more and more of a concern to me–how is it possible that secret members of the Flat Earth Society are in high positions controlling NSF funding? I despair!

Love your Friday links, Frank. I will enjoy!

  6. On politics like the Cheney and Kerry headlines.
As for the Onions we have a clear winner this time
    “Divorce hard on screen door”
Haven’t a clue what it means but it had me laughing 🙂

  7. It has been a long week. As usual, thanks for a great pick-me-up–have to laugh at current political leaders, just to keep from crying. Love the cartoon especially.

  8. Loved the way you finished. I haven’t seen the Marx Bros., actually – so thanks for the education, alongside the politics 🙂

  9. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your collection of articles regarding the Word Press hacking! I’ve been really concerned about the sudden “followers” that have come my way and I knew I couldn’t have gotten that popular! I see you as a clearing house of humor, music, politics, and interesting tidbits which is why I take my time to read you on the weekends to be inspired or educated. Boy, did this educate me. I have changed my password to something that even God would have a hard time decyphering. My only question: Is there a way to delete these “followers?”

Thanks, Frank. You’re the bees knees!

  10. Still behind on your blog, Frank, sorry! I sympathize with you about the Reds as most of the usual Yankee starting lineup is on the DL at the moment. I don’t want to think about how many will be injured by the All-Star break.

My favorite here is the sparrow with bird flu. And even though it’s just an Onion headline it makes me sad for the sparrow. I’m such a sap.
