On Politics
Regardless who is president and the parties involved, the Senate politicizing presidential appoints is a prime example of the level of unnecessary, self-serving, pathetic behavior.
I cringe when hearing politicians use phrases like “Americans want.” After all, outside of the ideologues, I confident that most Americans want Washington has not be able to deliver: constructive problem solving,
An area letter to the editor caught my eye this week. After a rabid Republican mistakenly stated the majority of Americans are Republicans, the writer when on to say that “people will always go with the stronger horse.” Yep, and that’s a reason why more and more people are shying away from Republicans.
Cheers to these moderate columnists for their excellent columns about the current Republican party: Kathleen Parker and David Brooks.
Liz Cheney, daughter of former VP Dick Cheney, announced she’s seeking the US Senate seat from Wyoming. She is also famous for saying that Nincompoop is “more qualified than Obama and Biden combined.”
I haven’t said much about the Trayvon Martin case. The event was tragic and unnecessary, and reasonable doubt dominated the trial. That said, politicizing the result is not a good idea. Meanwhile, I appreciated this column by Ruth Marcus.

With a heat wave blasting the eastern US getting, do you realize that heat is the top weather-related caused of deaths in the US? In addition, heat-related deaths are more than deaths from hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and lightning combined.

Friday starts National Scrabble Week. Weekend celebrations include (Saturday) Moon Day, Space Exploration Day, National Hot Dog Day, and Toss Away the “Could Haves” and “Should Haves” Day; while National Ice Cream Day leads the way on Sunday, so that’s another chance to get some Graeter’s. Re the Onions I like “Republican leader pressuring wife to try new political position”, but I think the winner is “Man who couldn’t defeat George W Bush attempting to resolve Israel-Palestine conflict”. You know what I think of American foreign policy and that one says it all.
Will try to get to some of the other links, but slammed for time at the moment.
But a bit of Blondie always acceptable 🙂

Apparently, if they’d check the polls, the Republicans would see what Americans really want – all of them out of Congress, the hell out of DC and no longer ruining our country.

Loved the op-eds this week.
I am afraid, as much as I love ice cream those are just to weird for me.
The whole why those terrible mosquitoes bite was interesting since the older I get the more those little nasties bite me and the worse my reaction is.
My beloved late step-mother was the Scrabble queen of our family. We all studied to try to beat her, with one exception (my niece) we failed all the time.

I was watching the news on that, women are not allowed to be members of that golf club. I would have thought that was illegal, then I recalled there are female only gyms so segregation is alive and well in the UK

Amazing that in this day and age, those types of rules at golf clubs still exist. Here, the course that hosts the Masters admitted their first female not that long ago … of course they pick a well-known personality! I wouldn’t be surprised if St. Andrews has that policy.

I actually did a piece on the Trayvon Martin case (link for the curious: http://www.debelit.com/2013/07/was-geoge-zimmerman-trial-racist.html) but I can understand why you didn’t want to go near that. From my research (including me living about 20-30 minutes away from where it happened) it’s just a huge, heaping mess.
I also have to tell you that, as a Republican, I’m disheartened by the Republican party. There are just too many loud voices to make the party seem credible anymore.

Peter,
As you can see, I just returned for your post. Well done. I tried to look at the case with the facts … and yes, a heaping mess is a good description.
You may not know, I am a register Republican, but consider myself as an independent moderate. If the course stays, I will undeclare, thus not vote in the next GOP primary.

I’m right there with you. The only reason I registered as a Republican was so I could vote in the Florida primaries. However, I’ve considered myself to be more of a libertarian at heart. Regardless, we can all agree on one thing: The GOP needs to check itself before it wrecks itself.

Thanks for sharing your takes on politics every Friday. It will be interesting to see how the Republican Party treats Liz Cheney in her bid for the Wyoming U.S. Senate seat. I disagree with most of Cheney’s political views, but I’ve been impressed with her personality, debating skills, and career/educational background.
Thanks also for the article “Why we don’t believe in Science.” It made my head feel better.

Tim,
That science article caused me to bang my head against the wall. As for Liz Cheney in Wyoming, it doesn’t take many votes to win there, so her primary against the incumbent will be interesting.
