On Opinions in the Shorts: Vol. 192

On Politics
As Republicans continue their push to stop the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), here’s a good one. I don’t know the exact quote or the actual person in Congress who said it, but this one says a lot to me: (From my recall, but it’s close) We must defund Obamacare before people start to realize its benefits.

While Congress has an approval rating in the teens, I recently saw a poll that over 50% of the people approve of those representing them. Yep – this shows we are getting just what we’ve asked for.

Congratulations to Tim, a local friend and everything-marching-band enthusiast, for making the 30,000th comment on this blog (yesterday).

Besides Saturday marking the start for Elvis Week and being National Garage Sale Day, Saturday is the day celebrating S ‘mores, the Smithsonian, Skyscrapers Appreciation, and Duran-Duran. Why the latter? Other than because they can, I don’t know.

I’m a baseball fan and one against players using Performance Enhancing Drugs. On the other hand, the latest suspensions by Commission Bud Selig are rooted in his head-in-the-sand stance in the 1990s. He’s pathetic!

Count me in as one looking forward to seeing the movie The Butler. Wow – his eyes personally saw 12 US Presidents, and meet 11. Amazing! Here’s an interesting article about his (Eugene Allen) funeral.

Sorry, no cartoon post this Saturday.

To send you into the weekend, here are two short videos from Cincinnati. Last weekend the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) held Lumenosity for the first time. Basically, it was a CSO concert held outside in a renovated city park in the shadow of their indoor home, Music Hall – which this time served as a backdrop for a light show.

Enjoy the show and in the words of Garrison Keillor, Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

  1. WOW 30,000!! I guess that means you get to sit nearer the stage while the rest of continue to hike our way to the nose-bleed area. Makes me smile to think I helped you (in the wee-est of words) along the way……well done, indeed!!

  2. “We must defund Obamacare before people start to realize its benefits.” Really? Now there’s a good one! And how can I not love “Royal Baby Spits Up on Great-Grandmother.” 30,000 is a very impressive number, Frank. 🙂

  3. Congrats on 30,000, Frank. Makes me realize I should check where I am in comment land. However, your first quote from a member of congress sickens me. Gosh, I’d love to know who said it. Hope your week is going well.
    Hugs from Ecuador,

  4. All of the articles were great this week, I especially loved Driving through Peru and the National Geographic Pictures! Your CSO videos were great, one of these days I am going to have to make it to your town, you simply make it so appealing.

The Onion is outdoing themselves these days.

Congrats on 30,000, just proves quality will attract ongoing vistors!

    • Val,
Gotta love the Nat Geo pics! … and I wish I would have attended Lumenocity! … and if you ever come to town, let me know!

Thanks for the kind words and for your contribution to those numbers!

  5. I will have to tell my friend about Lumenocity. Spectacular sight! I know she loves the conductor of the CSO and always plays a 4 CD track of his movie themes in the car.
Thank you for the article on Eugene Allen. I’m looking forward to it coming out, too.

  6. What a disconnect on the two polls. Yes, I suppose people don’t want to admit publicly that they voted for an idiot. In a lot of cases – especially here in Idaho and in places that underwent the scam of redistricting, there probably weren’t choices. I would imagine that the Royal Baby spitting up story is more truth than fiction. Can you get baby urp out of diamonds?

  7. THANKS for your excellent blog, where I’ve learned a ton of interesting stuff on my way to hitting the 30,000 comment jackpot!

Also thanks for including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s fantastic LumenoCIty celebration. The revival of Over-The-Rhine and Downtown Cincinnati is FOR REAL! Just ask the real estate agents!!

Concerning the GOP’s “We must defund Obamacare before people start to realize its benefits,” the interesting thing is their change from “Repeal And Replace,” heard throughout the 2012 election campaign, to simply – “Repeal.” Why?

  8. Wow, Frank! Those CSO videos were eye catchers. I like the special effects.

Defund O’care before it does us any good? How stoopid. It already is doing us some good, btw.

I don’t approve of Performance Enhancing Drugs either. But…may be we could try slipping some small doses of those PEDs into the water supply of Repubs in Congress. See if there is a spike in the do nothing graph.

Thanks for visiting my blog this morning.

  9. Interesting statistic on Congressmen’s approval rating… it makes you wonder if congressmen would actually be intelligent creatures if left to make decisions on their own, rather than in groups.

Here’s another interesting statistic for you… you have had 53,700% more comments than me, though I suspect you’ve probably had at least that many more posts as well. Of all my commenters, you currently rank #1! Many congrats 🙂

  10. Some people definitely get what they pay for because, sorry to say, they don’t have enough common sense to weed through the BS. You just can’t trust what people tell you.. use your own judgement and it seems some people have none. While I digress, I loved the videos Frank 🙂
