Of course I will be celebrating Stand Up to Cancer Day on the 13th, but I especially like Punctuation Day. I wonder how one celebrates such a momentous day?

You know how long it’s been since I had a cream filled donut? I will put that one on the calendar. And, we are big on talk like a pirate day. Avast!
I used air pressure to crush cans in class for the kids. That was always fun.

Interesting, Jim in IA. The amazing power of gas pressure has of course been appreciated by engineers at least since the 18th century invention of steam engines. I have personally been on both sides of it. I once had occasion to calculate the pressure on an airliner’s fuselage just from the small (in p.s.i.) pressure maintained for easy breathing. The pressure in pounds force is huge. Boeing touts its DreamLiner’s carbon-fiber hull as permitting a higher than normal internal pressure for better comfort, but that comes at the price of much higher tensile strength. I’ve also been on the opposite side of the equation, in submarines. Needless to say, these clips would not be good for recruiting. 🙄

Right you are. It doesn’t take much pressure difference over large areas to create some interesting and deadly possibilities.
One demo I used to do with my physics kids involved a large plastic bag big enough to sit in. A kid would take off shoes and sit cross legged in it with the bag gathered at their neck. We inserted a vacuum hose into the gathered bag at their neck for them to hold onto. We slowly ran the vacuum with a rheostat to gradually remove some air. Soon they were tightly squeezed from all sides by the pressure differential and couldn’t easily move.
I miss doing some of those demos. The kids and I loved them.

The 18th is my birthday, which turns out to be cheeseburger day and respect day, so I think I shall combine the two and respect the cheeseburger.

Call it anything you want, but it’s a great day here.
1. None of us is sick.
2. We’re going out to dinner tonight.
3. There are no hurricanes. Yet.
4. There are no tornadoes. Yet.
5. None of the appliances are broken and the a/c is working.
6. My dog loves me.
7. The markets are up.
8. I’m retired and don’t have to go to work.

Wow! All kinds of good things this month. Since I own a felt hat, I will be sure to celebrate it on Felt Hat Day. I always celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day, matey, but Butterscotch might rule that day this year. 🙂
