I imagine a few long-time readers where wondering my whereabouts during my blogging break – so, here’s the scoop.
Quebec City may be the only city in North America that has a strong European ambiance. French is the main language. People look French and dress in European style – and the city has a distinct European presence in its architecture. Have you ever been there? For us, it was worth a second trip!
With its lower town along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the walled upper town sitting on the bluffs, then to the modern city outside the wall, Quebec City is extraordinarily charming. History, art, boutiques, cafés, and more await visitors …. and walkers are in for a wonderful treat. We walked many miles, so here are a few pics. Enjoy, and do you have any favorites?
Chateau Frontenac (a Fairmont hotel) appears as a crown as it sits high atop the bluffs
.
The boardwalk leads visitors toward the Citadel and the Plains of Abraham
.
Lower Town is bustling with tourists and old buildings
.
Two Lower Town murals
.
Outside the wall, walking Rue St. Jean gave us a wonderful street for the locals which enters the old city gate
We enjoyed the fountain near the train station
.
The lit crown of Chateau Frontenac … Good night
Our vacations continues here.
Hotel Frontenac was one of my parents favorite place!

Absolutely. Love the street musicians too! Our hotels on each trip were very contemporary European decor inside an old building.

Beautiful. I think I went to Quebec as a child, but I really don’t remember it.
On the other hand, I love Montreal and Ontario, and hope to go again soon.

Guapo,
On our previous trip (2004) we visited both Montreal and QC. Wow … what a contrast! … but both wonderful.

Very nice shots, Frank. We never made it to Quebec – our visits to Canada were all Ontario. There is a neat little area along one of the great lakes – Erie, I think – that is rabidly British. As in, they fly the Union Jack everywhere, sometimes in lieu of the Maple Leaf! Not a whole lot different in architecture from some old American East Coast towns, but we went through that area right after Lady Diana Spencer died. You would’ve sworn that Diana was from there, with every billboard and newspaper headline talking only of the events surrounding her passing.
I need to hit Montreal and Winnipeg. Montreal has a much-lauded unit, the 22e Regiment (and yes, that title is missing some of those funky dots and accent marks), and of course, any military-oriented person MUST see the home of the Royal Guinea Pig … er … Winnipeg Rifles! (Sorry, that’s kind of an inside joke. 😉 )

John,
Interesting about the rabidly British town. Of course I know your visits are tied to some sort of military history!

Cathy,
Of course “old” in North America is nothing like old in Europe … but the buildings are well preserved.

This looks like a lovely town, Frank. Believe it or not, I’ve never been to Canada. Somehow I managed to visit the far away places but not the one closer to what used to be home. By the way, that hotel looks incredible. Would be fun to see photos inside that place.
Hugs from Ecuador,
Kathy

We took a cruise a few years ago, leaving Boston and ending in Quebec City where we saw the same sights you show. At first I thought you might have stolen our pictures. (Ha.) The one I didn’t see was from the hotel looking down on several of the ships.
How strange it seems to me that Quebec maintains its different language despite free and open access to the rest of North America. Culture encapsulates and perpetuates memes and I guess language must be the most powerful meme of all.

Hi Frank,
While I’ve been to Quebec Province quite a few times I’ve never been to Quebec City – we usually go to Montreal or the Eastern Townships. I can see from your photos that I’m way overdue for a trip there.
(I love listening to the Quebecers speaking French!)

Yes, I’ve wondered where you were, and yes, WW and I have been to Quebec, stayed in the Chateau Frontenac, and had one of the best meals of my life in one of the restaurants that you have pictured up above. We love, love, love that city. Can’t wait to go back. Did you get to any of the jazz clubs on the lower level down by the river?

Glad to give you a future vacation idea. In 2004 we drove from Cincinnati to Montreal (a long drive) … spend several days … drove to Quebec City to spend several days … drove to Vermont for dinner, then on to New Hampshire for several days …. then the long drive home. So QC is more drive-able for you.
