Opinions in the Shorts: Vol. 204

On Politics
This is my response to politicians who claim to be public servants. Public service isn’t about playing games, thus those who play are not public servants.

The IRS now desires to limit the connection between political activity and tax-exempt status. Although I support curbs, I’m amazed that the IRS deemed these groups as one’s “to promote the social welfare.” What a bunch of crap!

Even though they set the bar low, cheers to Sen. Murray (D-OR) and Rep. Ryan (R-WS) on getting something done the old-fashioned way. Cheers also to Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) for speaking out against the conservation Political Action Groups – but jeers to the predictable cranks.

President Obama’s handshake with Raul Castro didn’t bother me. Besides, President Obama delivered a zinger in his speech – so why not kill them with kindness?

On Potpourri
Hudson Howl offered a trade of Rod Ford for Sarah Palin. I accepted because that is a no-brainer.

The idea of making cell phone calls available on flights must be based on a way for the airlines to make money. I hate the idea, thus hope for a high fee and the airlines right to disconnect the call if the caller is bothering others.

Courtesy of The Onion Store, here is another potential holiday gift for the hard-to-buy person with a twisted sense of humor.

Because I didn’t post last Friday and knowing that some were counting on my gift ideas, here’s a second one – your very own creative cursing cards!

For those who dare, here’s The Onion’s 2013 Holiday Gift Guide.

Dancing with the Stars has been a good season. I always enjoy seeing non-dancers progress, but I don’t like seeing the audience vote causing better dancers to leave.

Pope Francis is a good choice for Time’s Person of the Year – but Miley Cyrus wasn’t worthy as a finalist.

Time: The Musical continues next week featuring Seasons, which means song titles with season(s) or one of the seasons in the title – but NOT in the form of a compound word. BTW – I love listening to all the songs! FYI: Bad news – The final act will be in January. Good news – A new musical begins!

Enjoy this version of Jingle Bells from President Obama.

Here are your weekend celebrations (sadly, not much going on)

  • (Fri) Cocoa Day, Pick a Pathologist Pal Day (here’s one who may recognize)
  • (Sat) Day of the Horse, Monkey Day, Shareware Day, Bouillabaisse Day, Halcyon Days begin
  • (Sun) Cat Herders Day, DNA Day, Lemon Cupcake Day, Zamenhof Day

Many thanks for all the kind words and support regarding the recent passing of my mother-in-law.

Because prep time has been short, I’m suspending Saturday Morning Cartoons until after the first of the year. However, I will have a seasonal treat tomorrow.

For Cincinnati, December has been abnormally cold and we’ve already received twice than normal amount of snow. Besides, the traditionally two coldest months are yet to come. I’m sending you into the weekend with the song that Lynn submitted in the latest Time: The Musical. In addition, it’s has outstanding images!

Enjoy Wintertime by the Steve Miller Band. Have a safe weekend and in the words of Garrison Keillor, Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

  1. LMAO on “Employee slowly realizes boss attempting to have normal conversation with her.”
Quincy! My mom used to watch that show. She was in tv love with the guy. Back then – I thought – My mom is weird…

    • Audra,
In terms of the celebrations, I have several go-to sources that are stored in a vault. It’s too early to be this cold and have this much snow. Cincinnati is already 2 times over the December average! This next batch seems to be several inches for us … but time will tell. Stay warm up there!!!!

  4. Frank, I’m going to come back later for a second look at this post. So much in one place! But I think you’ve given me another good gift idea for John. The book on WWI’s start will be a welcome edition to his collection.

  5. Thanks for the heads up on “Kansas City Lightning” about jazz great Charlie Parker. If possible please send me the review from the WSJ (they won’t let me in).
I join you in saluting Time Magazine for selecting Pope Francis as their “Person Of The Year.”

  6. “Cheers also to Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) for speaking out against the conservation Political Action Groups”—Yes! I about choked on my cereal when I saw that on CNN. It’s about time, Mr. Boehner. Strong cojones are attractive on anyone. (Well, figurative cojones that is…) He lacked them when we were facing the shutdown.

  7. A wonderful bag of goodies this week. I’m asking Santa for one thing: Please send statesmen that care more about what’s good for the country than getting reelected…and maybe lumps of coal for all the extremists choking up every single little thing and annoyingly ranting on the airwaves.
President Obama may realize the US really needs to be concentrating on getting along with our close neighbors…hope others soon will. Attention and money better spent.
Yes, this Pope is a good choice (not even Catholic, but he’s got a lot of commonsense)
Him being featured might be a good sign of what might be valued in the new year?
Jingle on, Frank. Appreciate your efforts and posts

    • Mouse,
A big of a fuller bag than I like, but that’s the way it worked out. As a nonCatholic, Pope Francis is rattling a few cages. Of course I wonder if the next pope will work at stopping the noise or continue.

I like your “statesmen” comment as it fits well with my “public servant” comment. Thanks for sharing!

  8. Hmmm…great music choice of the Steve Miller band on a post mentioning the legalization of marijuana. 🙂 Big Fan of the Steve Miller Band. Pope Francis = yes, agreed. Miley Cyrus? Are you kidding? Somebody must have been smoking something…Guess if I were naked and chained to a wrecking ball at the age of 47, it wouldn’t be quite the same…egads…I have a question about your comment just now about the horrible rain in Brazil – not sure I get it? Anywho….take care and have a great weekend!

  9. Oh! Forgot to mention about the airplane cell phone comment. I think they’ll allow it – but not talking. The airlines will find a way to make money at it.

I have to mention the whole Miley Cyrus thing again – it’s just crazy. Who are these people nominating others? Billy Ray Cyrus? I’ve come OUT of a bar like a wrecking ball, but usually not IN like a wrecking ball. Good golly.

  10. On following your marijuana link to The Onion, Frank, I couldn’t help but notice one headline you didn’t mention: “Boehner hoping to remain leader of Republican parties”. It’s becoming harder and harder to tell satire from reality. 😀

Attempting to watch through an unfiltered lens takes work, and I try. Like in sports …. our team loses, sometimes they play bad, other times they got it taken to them by the other team. In the end, a loss is a loss … but realizing how the loss came about is important. I always appreciate you stopping by.

  12. Slow-witted conspiracy theorist convinced government behind NASA–I like this one. And I want to read the article on the factors contributing to WWI. I have a recent interest in this era and I’m quite curious. As always, lots of good reading choices! And that much snow! Yikes!

    • Rich,
Although a great song, you are correct. Meanwhile, I screwed up and went with Future Time … which also tells you Seasons will be the final act in January. BTW … the original composer of this song appeared in the Compound Time act.
