Prologue
Time is vast in many ways. It can be complex or straight forward. It can be a chronological point or a special moment – cyros or kronos . A point determined by the sun’s continuous movement, or that some moment of the heart and mind that is timeless.
One doesn’t have to be a Christian to appreciate the beginning of chapter 3 from the Book of Ecclesiastes (commonly referred to as A Time for Everything). It’s appropriate for all.
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace. (NRSV version)
I first posted about time here, and then later as a joint effort with a photographer – and in time, came the joy known as Time: The Musical. For me, this musical extravaganza ends to beautiful music fitting for a prologue. The video is actually a commercial that I adore, which (to me) seems to be about chronos through karos.
The challenge for the audience is to share a musical treat about a personal special moment in time or a song about time that you enjoy. Try not to embedding, but I don’t mind unembedding. Thanks to everyone who participated in this musical, and I will announce the next musical in a future Opinion in the Shorts.

My only problem was choosing one! I selected “Moon River” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, because I can remember my parents watching it on television after I had gone to bed, and I heard the music and was so drawn to it, that I sneaked into the hall and sat there listening, hoping I wouldn’t be discovered. It was the soundtrack, not the movie, that was so powerful at probably about eleven years old. Lovely music in that commercial, though that’s not surprising. Some of the greatest Classical music came attached to crazy cartoons, because the copyrights had run out, and it was free. 🙂

Probably one of my all time favorite songs is the Rolling Stones’ “Time Waits for No One” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC0Qt1lvLq8 When I first heard it 40 years ago, I loved it for the Mick Taylor guitar solo, but now that I’m older, although I remain very fond of the guitar work, the lyrics resonate more.

My son used to love the song that includes the lyrics “If I had words to make a day for you, I would wish for a day golden and true, I would make that day last for all time, Give you a night deep in moonlight.” I made a mixed tape for him about ten years ago which featured that song a number of times. I still love it because it is so joyful and catchy, because it is a great song to sing when a day is brimming and because it reminds me of him.

There are several…I remember one Elton John, but I can’t remember the name of the song…just some lyrics…”large hands lift him through the air, excited eyes contain him there, this is your brand new brother” I was pregnant with my third child, a boy, and was driving in the car bawling when I heard the song. The Omega commercial is indeed a true work of art. It appeals on multiple levels, combining beautiful music with a panorama of efficiency and mechanical complexity. Very satisfying.
Time. On my desk here are a few references that I consult with declining frequency because of the increasing versatility of the internet. A copy of the constitution, Glover’s Pocket Ref, a Federal Reserve pamphlet on interest-rate arithmetic. And, the NY Times Almanac, 2004. I used to get one every year, and that one was the last I needed, a dated buoy in time’s channel. Where doe the time go?

I am the absolute worse person to ask about music, even to think of songs that I enjoy (with the exception of anything by Leonard Cohen). On our drives to and from Quebec, hubby and I listen to music, guessing who sings what. Well, he pretty much scores 100%, whereas I score maybe 20%. I tend of have a real blockage with anything by Led zeppelin for some reason.

Time may not be in my song selection but this song takes me way back in time.
My older sister used to take singing lessons; me dancing lessons. I always wanted to sing.
I wasn’t able to keep a tune very well but I could stay on key with this song.
When my sister performed at a USO for the troops, I begged my mother to let me sing this song. I was 13. I’ve posted 2 of my favorites. Of course, the Wizard of Oz was my intro to it.

We need to believe in the wisdom in the beginning of Chapter 3 – Book of Ecclesiastes. Another way to look at it could be “There is nothing new under the sun”. This helps us to accept everything happening to us and around us.
