On Exploring Time and Space

TimeAndSpace

(Note: The Exploring series continues during we continue to prepare our move.)

The previous post began our journey in this Exploring series in deep space. We remain in deep space for this post, but in a philosophical sense of time and space.

Time and space are modes by which we think and not conditions in which we live. (Albert Einstein, Physicist)

Many a trip continues long after movement in time and space have ceased. (John Steinbeck, Writer)

You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don’t try to forget the mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space. (Johnny Cash, Musician)

Time and space – time to be alone, space to move about – these may well become the great scarcities of tomorrow. (Edwin Way Teale, Writer)

There are moments of existence when time and space are more profound, and the awareness of existence is immensely heightened. (Charles Baudelaire, Poet)

Nothing puzzles me more than time and space; and yet nothing troubles me less (Charles Lamb, Essayist)

The biggest difference between time and space is that you can’t reuse time” (Merrick Furst, Computer Scientist)

In essence, String Theory describes space and time, matter and energy, gravity and light, indeed all of God’s creation… as music. (Roy H. Williams, Businessman)

Henceforth space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality. (Hermann Minkowski, Mathematician)

A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. (Albert Einstein, Physicist)

The most violent revolutions in an individual’s beliefs leave most of his old order standing. Time and space, cause and effect, nature and history, and one’s own biography remain untouched. New truth is always a go-between, a smoother-over of transitions. It marries old opinion to new fact so as ever to show a minimum of jolt, a maximum of continuity. (William James, Philosopher)

When time and space and change converge, we find place. We arrive in Place when we resolve things. Place is peace of mind and understanding. Place is knowledge of self. Place is resolution. (Abdullah Ibrahim, Musician)

Even the wildest dreams have to start somewhere. Allow yourself the time and space to let your mind wander and your imagination fly. (Oprah Winfrey, Producer)

Time travel used to be thought of as just science fiction, but Einstein’s general theory of relativity allows for the possibility that we could warp space-time so much that you could go off in a rocket and return before you set out. (Stephen Hawking, Physicist)

…for us physicists believe the separation between past, present, and future is only an illusion, although a convincing one. (Albert Einstein, Physicist)

Did any of those quotes spark a thought? If you had the choice, would you use a time machine to travel ahead or backward in time? If backward in time, who/what would you visit? Enjoy Time Machine by the Alan Parson Project.

  1. I’d travel everywhere if I had a time machine. That would be incredible! Though unless it could travel in space too, I’d have to consider very carefully where to put it.

Wouldn’t want the Morlocks to findf it!

  2. Nice compilation of thoughts.

If I had a time machine, I would use it to explore the evolution great ideas, freedom for example. I would go back in time to find the origins of the ideas. Then, zip forward and watch the ideas change for the better and the worse. Those would be interesting journeys.

  3. I wouldn’t choose to time travel – I think our task is to learn to be here in the present and be peaceful and inwardly happy with what is. And I have enough of a challenge with that without complicating things further 🙂

Last night I watched an excellent movie starring Jared Leto called Mr. Nobody. It is built on two theories coming from quantum physics. One, that all possibilities exist equally until a choice is made and two, if time is a result of the outward expansion of the universe what will happen when the universe reaches maximum expansion and begins to contract…..will time reverse?

The movie further plays with the great existential question – am I real or just a figment of somebody else’s imagination or dream?

It’s a good mind-blowing movie and I mention it because it kind of plays with many of the philosophies mentioned here. 🙂

  4. A beautiful & profound post my friend, I particularly liked the way you incorporated quotes from all walks of life. Surprised even by the Johnny Cash Quote. Coarse my favorite was: “Henceforth space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality.” (Hermann Minkowski, Mathematician) I loved this very much & will be sharing this now! 😉

  5. Like this one “…time to be alone, space to move about – these may well become the great scarcities of tomorrow. (Edwin Way Teale, Writer)” Perhaps that’s why we’re moving to the country house. Sell city house or country house was a dilemma. Then it became a no brainer. Space, lots of space, is scarce.
I’d like to recommend the short story “La noche boca arriba” by Julio Cortázar. You can find it in translaton here http://siempreleer.blogspot.com/2011/04/la-noche-boca-arriba.html

  6. I asked for more Deep Space and you delivered, along with Time. I’m also curious to know what is now your all-time favorite movie about space (must include space travel). As you know, mine is “2001, A Space Odyssey” (which you disliked), but a lot of films have come and gone since then.

  7. I am wondering whether the time machine could be used to avert disaster. Would humans be able to change their behaviour to avert nuclear war, or the destruction of our planet because of pollution and exploitation of nature’s resources.

  8. I’ve wanted to travel back in time since I was a kid. Maybe it’s all those episodes of Time Tunnel I used to watch that inspired me. I would want to go spend one full day in each century in time.

  9. I have thought deep upon your Question would I travel back or forward in time? I think In all honesty I would say neither .. For without my past I would not be who I am today.. and the future is best left where it is… the unknown… While I remain ever present in this gift we call life.. 🙂 thank you for those amazing collection of quotes and thought provoking post Frank..

  10. I have a difficult time with this one, ultimately I think I would go forward. My past defines me, if I went backward the temptation to change that past would be far to great. I am human, I am uncertain if I could resist changing my own past or even resist changing small or large parts of the world. Going forward though, my curiosity is huge and perhaps if we knew what the future is we could work to make better or be more content that it will be.

  11. The space has never … been that exciting for me .. but I love to look at star-filled sky … and a the moon. But I truly enjoyed your video … and now with Oscar I can bring the moon so much closer to us. Had a try over the weekend .. and it went pretty good. *smile Love the music in the video. Have to see if I can find any details. Amazing colors … fantastic choice, Frank. Northern Lights is a show of its own.

  12. In looking at spaces so vast, such incomprehensible forces, such incomparable beauty, I do not feel small. No, I am reminded that I am made of star stuff, that I belong to the universe as much as any galaxy, as much as any sun. I am part of the wonder of Creation, left with a yearning to fully know my part.
