An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind. (Mahatma Gandhi, Indian)

If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner. (Nelson Mandela, South African)

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. (John F. Kennedy, American)

A peace is of the nature of a conquest; for then both parties nobly are subdued, and neither party loser. (William Shakespeare, British)

We make war that we may live in peace. (Aristotle, Greek)

If you want peace, you don’t talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies. (Desmond Tutu, South African)

The pursuit of peace and progress cannot end in a few years in either victory or defeat. The pursuit of peace and progress, with its trials and its errors, its successes and its setbacks, can never be relaxed and never abandoned. (Dag Hammarskjold, Swede)

Peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding. (Ralph Waldo Emerson, American)

To put the world in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order; we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right. (Confucius, Chinese)
Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding. (Albert Einstein, German American)

The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood. (Martin Luther King, Jr., American)

Those who can win a war well can rarely make a good peace and those who could make a good peace would never have won the war. (Winston Churchill, British)

Peace is a state of quiet and tranquility. Peace is a harmony between people. Peace is mutual concordance between governments.

Some of us see humans as one, thus see everlasting peace as desirable quest, which is much more than a point in time, but a desirable end point. But history has countless reminders of tranquility followed by violence, and the cycle repeats … peace follows war, thus leading to another war.

Serenity to turmoil, quiet to loud, calm to tumult are only a few of the terms describing human events. Arnold Sherman wrote Song of Peace for handbells memorializing another event – the Oklahoma City bombing of April 19, 1995. As you listen, the harsh discord of violence is evident – as is the calmness of peace. Coincidentally, I finalized this post while watching the moving dedication of the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Peace to you.

  1. If the majority wish to live and work toward attaining a collective peaceful, free existence,
Why oh why do we allow [give] the minority the power to hold us hostage over and from ownership?

A beautiful piece, aFA. Tears of remembrance.
I must say “carrying on” takes on a subdued demeanor. Rightly so.

In sincere appreciation (with echos of Elyse’s)…each and every bit…

    • Raye,
It’s a beautiful piece, especially when incorporating voices. We played this about 5 years ago, and I still think about it.

Meanwhile, the power seekers have a way of forging themselves into control in their personal quest.

Welcome back from your wonderful trip.

  2. Peace such short word to say – but such difficult to achieve – because it has so much money involved, but I think we have the power if we are united.
Dag Hammarskjold, one of the greatest men when it was about peace and mankind.
    Fantastic post – fantastic music.

  3. Frank your thoughts on Peace I am sure are echoed around the Globe… And yet there are those who wage war because they fear the Peace..

I am loving the video as it is playing now the choir has joined in.. It held me spell-bound… I love hand bells at the best of times..
I have a link for you now… I wrote a poem way back in the 90’s when they then Yugoslavian War was raging… It touched me deeply then, as any War does…
There are No winners in war…
And I pray for Peace to be found within the hearts of men as they lay down their weapons of war as they pick up the pieces of their hearts … I pray they will share them with others as they come to understand All hearts are joined as One within the Cosmic Beat of Life..
    Wonderful Post Frank…
Oh and yes the link it was way back in 2008 I posted this 🙂

  5. A fine post, Frank, and appropriate especially in the context of the violence in Israel, Syria and Ukraine.

I have been of late in some rather heated discussions with a fellow alumnus over the Obama administration’s strategy relative to Ukraine. Like myself, he is a retired career naval officer and, it so happens, was commanding officer of a nuclear submarine during the Cold War. He denigrates Obama for “weakness”, says economic sanctions will have no effect, and advocates building up anti-missile defenses in Eastern Europe as well as having our Navy sail into the Black Sea to conduct combat exercises near their principal port in Crimea.

I thought your Winston churchill quote captured this situation perfectly:

Those who can win a war well can rarely make a good peace and those who could make a good peace would never have won the war. (Winston Churchill, British)

    • Jim,
Sadly, there always seems to be a place in the world with violence, which causes me to wonder how many places don’t make the news.

i wonder if his strategy is based on him preferring various military options or a natural disapproval of President Obama.

  6. Bells are as good as bubbling fountains…maybe some for every home? Lovely collection of quotes. If people could sit down with inside voices and actually listen to each other and at least try to walk in each others’ shoes. You got that started with this post, hopefully

  7. What a beautiful handbell piece. Do you recall if it was played at the Oklahoma Memorial Service? I have a recording of the music of that service, and haven’t played it in at last a decade. I’ll need to check! I love each and every one of these quotes, Frank. They are great and should be memorized…if I were capable. 🙂

    • Debra,
If memory serves me correctly, this piece was not played at the memorial service, but was commissioned for a handbell conference in OKC … but, I’m not sure.Nonetheless, a wonderful piece of music.
