On a Monday Salute

It’s a three-day holiday week for we Americans, so how did you spend your weekend?

I imagine you’ll be surprised to see that we had a wide variety of activities that included ballroom dance, a local festival, among the hoards of people at the Taste of Cincinnati, a Reds baseball game (we lost), a cookout with neighbors, and some decorating planning time … and we still have one day to go! Other than hosting my father-in-law in the afternoon for a simple meal, we are hoping for a low-key day.

Celebrations for your week

  • (Week) Week of Solidarity with the People of Non-Self-Governing Territories, Hurricane Preparedness Week, Shoe Week, Pickle Week, Safe Boating Week, Good Stewardship Week, Frozen Yogurt Week, American Beer Week
  • (Mon) Memorial Day, Blueberry Cheesecake Day, Cherry Dessert Day
  • (Tues) Grape Popsicle Day, Cellophane Tape Day
  • (Wed) Senior Health & Fitness Day, Slugs Return from Capistrano Day, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day, Brisket Day, Hamburger Day
  • (Thurs) Learn about Composting Day, Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, Coq au Vin Day, Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day

Given the Memorial Day holiday, this Monday Morning Entertainment focuses on the armed forces instead of humor. Many communities will celebrate Memorial Day with a parade and a remembrance event for fallen soldiers. Although this is a USA holiday, I know this blog is read in countries that also remember their warriors. Even though our Memorial Days may not be on the same day, this post is also for you. Have a good week!

  1. Mowed, gardened, napped, hiked, partied, ate, napped, called, hugged, listened, drank, photographed, read, laughed, wrote, visited, meteored…in no particular order.

  2. God, I am the most boring person here. I have been sitting down and studying since Friday, and am going to continue doing so until Monday night. I wish I was out right now. People have fun!

  3. Sorry the Reds lost. Really. Going to a game is better when the home team wins, the ball park frank would taste even better I suspect.

I read in a magazine article just yesterday. Every Memorial Day, American representatives arrive in Halifax to preside over a small ceremony for sailors and prisoners from the War of 1812 whom died at the Mellville Prison located on a small island on the western arm of Halifax harbour. I think this is a strong statement to the importance of honouring the the fallen despite the conflict and when it occurred. The site is on prime real estate, but any kind of development has been blocked and the land will remain untouched out of respect and honour.

  4. Thank you Frank 🙂 One of the great hings about blogging is that we are given so many opportunities to celebrate our similarities and our sharing of the one globe. But ‘Put A Pillow On Your Fridge Day’? You may as well have said to me: ‘iffuzzle ergubler bas Purblist deganpud!’

  5. Glad to hear you’re having a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. We’re spending ours at a water park, and tonight we saw X-Men. Great movie. Much better than Godzilla, I thought.

  7. Well I am picking Thursday, now I just have to find someone to cook for me…at their house preferably thus no clean up either!

Sox lose, my stupid Spurs lost too. Now they are only up by one in the series against the Thunder.

Of course the week is all good, it is SHOE WEEK. This must be a special dedication week for all us women!

Hope you day is wonderful Frank, we here in Dallas are supposedly going to be hit by more storms today.

    • Sylvia,
Because I missed that one, I’m enjoying the belated version of that day by catching up on blogging comments. 🙂 … And a memorial salute to the British and South African soldiers.

  8. The history of the United States is replete with wars, from the rag-tag volunteer army and navy of the Revolution to the proud and finely-equipped and trained professionals that fight for us today. I submit that the best way to honor our military traditions, veterans, and those currently serving, is to do everything we can to ensure their sacrifices are not in vain, and that their commitment to combat will not be done lightly but always be the last resort.

This is not easy, and the trend since World War II has diverged from such a goal. As citizens, we need to pledge to support and elect leaders who resist expedient resort to violence in favor of long-term hard work and who have core values and the long-term vision to resist the continuous demagoguery that characterizes our messy politics. I urge one and all to vote in every election, not just nationally, and to vote thoughtfully with this in mind.

  9. Well, let’s see: I slept in a lot, ran some errands. I cannot say that my weekend was very exciting. You always put me to shame! Glad you are having fun. I am too, just at a slower pace.

  10. I’m behind again Frank, but obviously still in cinq with these “days” as today, Wednesday, I had a burger for lunch! I’m not gonna celebrate the slugs, though!

And it is a great week so far for me — we are in Maine, so life is good.
