On a Walktober Town Walk

As part of Robin’s Walktober, welcome to Loveland, the town where my wife and I reside. Instead of sharing our beauty fall colors, I’ve chosen to take you for a town walk of this northeastern Cincinnati suburb.

Lt. Colonel Thomas Paxton may have first lived in a house like this …

Rich Cabin

… but his daughter and husband built this home in 1840 …

… and all are buried in the family cemetery (both the home and cemetery are now part of a subdivision)

In the early days, Loveland thrived as a railroad community because two lines intersected here, thus served at least 14 trains a day … (and one railway still operates as I hear the train’s horn several times a day)

Loveland Station

One of the railroad beds is now a very popular 70-mile bike trail, which also intersects with other trails in the state

Loveland straddles both sides the Little Miami River, which is a designated sceinic waterway at both the state and national level, thus is popular for canoeing … plus the bike trail follows the river

Between the bike trail and the river is a wonderful city park with picnic tables, an amphitheater, and access to the river bank

Old Town offers a some shops, eateries, and a movie theater that the local firefighters converted into a playhouse for the community theater company

Other sights include a studio for local artists, an old church that is now someone’s home (I’m told the owners call it their chouse), and even a mural for Resa

Loveland honors its veterans from all wars and area firefighters

The city’s motto is The Sweetheart of Ohio, besides, people love to send Valentine’s Day cards with the Loveland post office mark

  1. “Loveland” ❤ what an amazing name for a Town!…
I love the photos you have attached here, dear Frank and enjoyed the lines in honor to Colonel Thomas Paxton.
The Sweetheart of Ohio stands out in its originality ⭐
Thank you very much for sharing!. All the very best to you,

  2. Very nice visual trip you’ve given us! I believe we ate dinner in Loveland one night the year we lived in Cinci. We didn’t go out too much because I’d just had a baby. But that sounds familiar. It was a great restaurant (whatever it was called), and I just remember a HUGE dessert, the biggest dessert I’d ever seen. I laughed so hard I could barely eat it. Wish I could remember the restaurant.

  3. Great post, Frank. Interestingly, the town closest to Fort Collins is Loveland,CO. And Valentines Day is a very busy day for their Post Office, too! We have several of those “Rails to Trails” paths in Colorado, although they are usually loved because they’re not as steep in the mountains because trains couldn’t traverse the steeper grades. Therefore, riding them here in the high altitudes guarantees at least a gentler climb. Your beautiful town of Loveland, Ohio looks like a great place to visit.

Although I haven’t been there, I know of your Loveland. Given it’s proximity to the mountains and national parks, I imagine it’s a bit busier than my town. Gotta love the rails to trails!

      • You are so correct: this is our kind of restaurant and menu. Exquisite. Also, loved the music in your following post. The Bop is still my signature move. I bopped on the cruise (while WW did his “white-boy” dance–don’t ask!) all around my husband. I bop in the kitchen when I cook, and I bop when I’m especially happy and all alone. 🙂

        • I knew you would like this place … but then again, they would have to deliver the taste & service … and fortunately we know the owner/chef.

Cheers to you enjoy Ms Jody … but we won’t watch WW doing his thing. 😉

  4. I think you and Mrs Frank chose a wonderful place to call home Frank – I hope it lives up to it’s name and is full of happy people! It certainly looks very pretty and with some interesting architecture too. We have disused railway tracks here that are also very popular bike trails – must be a global thing this disuse of train lines. That was fun I enjoyed your Walktober post very much.

Hooray … my favorite Kiwi joined my walk! 🙂 We’ve associated with Loveland for many lives, but this is the first time we’ve lived within the city’s boundary. …. and yes … many nice people are here. Glad to know the rails-to-trails is a global thing.

  5. Loveland looks rather charming, Frank. Naturally I had to check out the Loveland Stage Company. So, did you and Mrs. AFA get your tickets to “Young Frankenstein” yet, or are you guys ushering it? Loveland Sweets looks like an excellent candy store. Is it?

  6. This is such a wonderful share Frank… lovely to see where you live… and what a place name at that… love the bike ride tracks and canoeing river… all that’s missing are the golf course photos…

    • Bulldog,
Glad you enjoyed my walk. Just outside of town (and in close proximity to each other) are 4 courses …. One public course that isn’t long, but tight and well groomed … and quite scenic … another public course that is flat, boring, and just a place to play at the last minute … two private clubs, one which is an Arnold Palmer design.

  7. Wonderful walk and tour, Frank! The Paxton’s really moved up, didn’t they? Loveland has such a great name, and it looks like a great place to live. I’d love to check out the bike trail sometime.

Thank you so much for participating in Walktober. I enjoyed walking with you through the town of Loveland. 🙂

    • Robin,
Thanks for hosting the walk. This post has been in my head for some time, so your Walktober proclamation got me going to git ir done!

I know the Paxtons had a lot of land, but I don’t know the how many acres (or even square miles) … but because “Paxton” is on many names of subdivisions and streets, I’ve got the feel that was all Paxton land at one time.

  8. That looks like a really nice place.
The pics of the river are beautiful. I would love to have a clean river around where I could just jump to after a long workout, and also to let the furry beast play.
    Have a nice week Frank!

There’s a lot here … need to long, flat trail for your training, we got it. Given that downtown is in a valley, long, steep climbs are also available. Thanks for coming along for the walk … and tell doggie that many dogs walk their owners on the trail.

  9. Loved the picture tour. We get to see so many new places through blogging and being somewhat shut-in it just makes my day. Thank you so much. Loveland just sounds like a lovely place. In my hippie days I would have they named it exclusively for us 🙂

  10. This is one of those iconic anytown, USA made more special because we slowed down long enough to stroll through the streets marveling at the things that make this place not just anytown, but a town called, our home. Love it Frank – enjoyed the walk about.

    • Mary,
Glad it has that appearance & and I can see it in the pic. Because being suburban, it isn’t slowed down, although that doesn’t take away from its charm. Thanks for joining the walk.

  11. You’ve fired me up to dig into Loveland’s history, and to walk the bike trail before all the leaves fall off (I tried walking the trail in the summer a couple years ago on a near 100 degree day – Not smart).

  12. Limited mobility doesn’t allow for much in the way of walks anymore, so I love virtual walks like this. A lovely Loveland you have there. I assume it’s named after Somebody Loveland, but why do I think of the last line of that old song “For Me and My Gal?”

  13. OMG!!! A mural for me! ⭐ Frank, you are so thoughtful! How special is a mural from a place called “Loveland”? ❤ It's as special as special can be! Thank you for your thoughtfulness, Frank. ⭐ You live in a very pretty place. It is grey and rainy here, and you have MADE MY DAY! ❤ ❤

I haven’t been in the old, white house, but my wife has … and she talked to the owner who is also doing the renovation .. .but we aren’t sure when it will be ready for occupancy.

    • Cuttlefish,
Downtown sits in a valley … thus most people reside above the town on each side of the river. In terms of open space, I imagine the pics I selected of the bike path, river, and park give that impression … after all, they are in very close proximity.

And so is your town. Lovely images, Frank …
The last one – my first thought way .. the way out of Loveland!!!! *laughing .. but it’s of course the rain that will be coming in on.
Lovely post .. truly lovely. A bit of Vivi style – I like that. *laughing

Glad you enjoyed walking my town … its a good place. We have been inside the Rich cabin … the main part is one large room with a loft for sleeping. It is original to this area, but a few miles for its current location.

      • I said so about the last payment .. because one of the most popular postcards from Ireland they have a old falling apart cottage with the same wording.
You truly live in a beautiful area and this time of the year with all the intense colors.

Welcome to Loveland and my little corner of the world. As a town, Loveland has a lot going for it … as well as convenience to the city. The bike travel is very popular for bikers, walkers, and joggers. Thanks for stopping by!

Welcome first-time commenter and cheers to fellow participant in Robin’s Walktober. The White Pillars house is still undergoing renovation, so I will be curious to see the end result. Nonetheless, Loveland downtown is nice … especially on a good weather day.

  18. Love the 70 mile bike path! They did the same here with track that connected the harbour with the main line, now it’s the best way to get from one side of the city to the other and miss the traffic 😉
