On a Toast to Autumn

By definition, all seasons are a time of transition in the rhythm of life. Some see autumn as a start, after all, each school starts in autumn, yet it ends at the start of summer. To me, autumn is one of the more interesting seasons. Our temperatures vary, but I like the combination of warm by day, yet cool by night – yet, I don’t miss the long leaf-gathering ordeal of our previous address.

I built this post around three videos of fitting music will displaying the sights of the season. So think of the quotes as stepping-stones on your through the glories of the season. Which quote(s) do you like? Which music/video captured your attention?

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. (Albert Camus)

My sorrow, when she’s here with me, thinks these dark days of autumn rain are beautiful as days can be; she loves the bare, the withered tree; she walks the sodden pasture lane. (Robert Frost)

Aprils have never meant much to me, autumns seem that season of beginning, spring. (Truman Capote, Breakfast at Tiffany’s)

The spring, summer, is quite a hectic time for people in their lives, but then it comes to autumn, and to winter, and you can’t but help think back to the year that was, and then hopefully looking forward to the year that is approaching. (Enya)

There is a part of me that will forever want to be walking under autumn leaves, carrying a briefcase containing the works of Shakespeare and Yeats and a portable chess set. I will pass an old tree under which once on a summer night I lay on the grass with a fragrant young woman and we quoted E.E. Cummings back and forth. (Roger Ebert)

I trust in nature for the stable laws of beauty and utility. Spring shall plant and autumn garner to the end of time. (Robert Browning)

The garden of love is green without limit and yields many fruits other than sorrow or joy. Love is beyond either condition: without spring, without autumn, it is always fresh. (Rumi)

Autumn…the year’s last, loveliest smile. (William Cullen Bryant, Indian Summer)

Spades take up leaves
No better than spoons,
And bags full of leaves
Are light as balloons.
I make a great noise
Of rustling all day
Like rabbit and deer
Running away.
But the mountains I raise
Elude my embrace,
Flowing over my arms
And into my face.
I may load and unload
Again and again
Till I fill the whole shed,
And what have I then?
Next to nothing for weight,
And since they grew duller
From contact with earth,
Next to nothing for color.
Next to nothing for use.
But a crop is a crop,
And who’s to say where
The harvest shall stop?”
― Robert Frost (Gathering Leaves)

  1. Beautiful music for a beautiful season, Frank. Fall is my favorite time of year. I love that second piece. I have that on my iPod. And you can’t beat the trees on the lake. We had to cut down some trees, and while I miss them, I don’t miss all the leaves we had to pick up. That’s kind of a relief!

    • Amy,
I’m with you about dealing with fallen leaves. Before moving, it was every 5 days for 6-8 weeks … thus I don’t miss it! Meanwhile, the second video and it’s music is wonderful … and one that I’ve used here before .. glad you enjoyed it.

Interesting view of autumn and life as I’ve never thought of it that way before. … and cheers to your appreciation of the Satie piece … plus your not the first to enjoy it!

  2. It’s not Autumn here Frank – it’s winter! We have regressed alarmingly and I am snuggled down inside for the evening keeping out of the vicious wind and icy air. Tomorrow it will be spring again I am sure!

I love the theme from ‘A River Runs Through It’. Anything in which I can hear water in the music is a treat for me Your post suits us here today too.

    • Pauline,
Although you are on the opposite seasonal cycle than me, glad to know that you still found the music suitable. While autumn leads us toward winter, you are transitioning from winter toward summer … so to all those south of the equator, I give this.

Aprils have never meant much to me, autumns seem that season of beginning, spring. (Truman Capote, Breakfast at Tiffany’s)…. and of course for me Eric Satie 🙂 I love his music and this is one of my favorite. Thank you dear Frank, it was a beautiful beginning to my day in here with your amazing post. “Autumn”… means so many things now in my life… We got married in this season and also my son (last saturday) got married and also it is the birthday of my country, (Republic Day of Turkey)….

  4. I like the Camus quote. Spring and Autumn are my two favorite seasons. I also like the fact that theatre renews in both seasons. I could only play two of the videos on my phone. I’ll go with the Satie but I also like George Winston’s reflections about Autumn on piano. I have that recording in vinyl which is rather useless since I no longer have a turntable. More year round clutter over here, Frank. Joy.

  5. I love fall. It’s usually my favorite season (though summer is a close second). But this year, the fruit flies are tainting it for me. We have smelly apple-cider vinegar traps set up throughout the home. They work, but the flies are still making an appearance. I think it’s going to take cold weather to chase them away.
