On 37

Long-time visitors here know I occasionally toast a specific number in honor of an occasion. Although it was in April, this is a toast to our thirty-seven years of marriage. Feel free to add any other notes about thirty-seven (37). With this, I raise my glass to the my dance partner and friend – fellow golfer, wine & food enthusiast – my handbell-playing wife.

    • Dale,
Most of the time, I’ve been doing these numbers around birthday’s (primarily mine, and a few of my wife’s) and our anniversary … and every once awhile special celebration for whatever. They are fun to put together, but actually a collection for trivia lovers.

  1. Congratulations on your 37 + years with the obviously lovely Mrs A Frank Angle. May you both continue to glide about the dance floor, ring those bells and eat, drink and be merry every weekend for many more years to come!

Whilst all the info on the number 37 is most interesting and some of it even intriguing, my mind is full of what I must tell you of my trip to the supermarket this afternoon. As you know, it was my intention to hunt down a packet of biscuits* that look like your ‘Fig Newtons’ and reacquaint myself with the name – but alas Frank – THERE WERE NONE TO BE FOUND!

    * I call the things you call cookies ‘biscuits’ the things you call biscuits we call ‘scones’ or ‘flat breads’. Ah, language differences!

I walked up and down the biscuit aisle at least three times. I examined every packet there. I have to admit to being startled at how much naming and packaging has changed in the years since last walked that aisle – I recognised very little. There is less variety than there was, most biscuits look the same and only the brightly coloured packaging is different. But many of my old favourites are missing in action. Where are the malt biscuits? The gingernuts? The Lemon Creams? There are a pile of US imports which seems dreadful to me when we once had our very own huge biscuit factory that I once worked at in the school holidays ….. and which has now apparently all but closed down. Now oreos and suchlike adorn our shelves. God knows what is in them if they can survive the journey and the delousing they must go through on entering this country. I wouldn’t recommend any one eat them!

But all is not lost Frank as my tale is not yet done. I left the supermarket and called into my local organic store. I gathered up my bits and pieces and went to the counter. There in a big, individually wrapped pile lay the biscuits that you call ‘Fig Newtons’ and we, dear Frank, call ’em ‘Fruit Rolls’ even though they are not rolls. Apparently this is because ‘Fig Newtons’ is a trademark and therefore our version must euphemistically become ‘fruit’. Why ‘Roll’? I don’t know! I was almost tempted to purchase one! They looked very nice 🙂

    • Pauline,
Wow … you did a lot of work to answer my question … so first of all, cheers to your efforts.

Products today are so worldwide, thus the more local products have gone by the wayside. Nabisco (maker of Oreo’s) is part of a larger US company that sells products worldwide … so I imagine they also produce worldwide.

I think Nestle (a Swiss company) is the largest food product producer in the world … and they have many labels. Then again, I know don’t eat packaged/processed foods.

Meanwhile, glad the Fruit Rolls tempted you … so congrats on avoiding the temptation! 😉

Many thanks for the best wishes to us. Although she hasn’t commented in some time, she calls herself The Right Angle … butt I don’t understand why. 😉

  2. 37 years good going Frank… but I have to add the most important 37 is your years of marriage. … but that is a lot of info on the number… going to have to go back over it again… I’m not going to show this to Linda as she will want me to do it all for our 41 years and it just seems a lot of research…

  3. Happy anniversary, Frank. I wish you and your wife many more. I was scouring YouTube for a video with 37 for you and I came up with this one: http://youtu.be/9YbWZtsEZKI I think the use of 37 in the title might actually add weight to it being “the number most people state when asked to give a random number between 0 and 100”. As fond as I am of you, I’ve had a long day and I’m not going to count how many time this cat actually meowed.

    • Lame,
Being one who enjoys pets, and we had cats, the video made me laugh. Regarding the number of meows, I counted, but to get the exact number, I would have to listen with quiet headphones … but I can say with certainty that the number is close tot the title. … many thank on the congrats, but I can’t recall the last time someone asked me to state a number from 0 to 100.

  4. Immediately, upon seeing the title of your post, I jumped to the conclusion that you had finally found that which explorers had searched for again and again in the last millennium; the fountain of youth… and that you were proudly celebrating your 37th birthday again with us, your friends. I was thinking of a little birthday poem as I opened your blog post. Though I was a bit too optimistic,I must say that the union between two lovers gives birth to a new soul that both of them share in common. And so I share your joy and send my love and best wishes to the two of you on the birthday of your shared existence.

  5. …and funnily enough it is supposed to be the number people are most likely to say when asked to give a random number between 0 and 100! However, the best celebration is of course your anniversary [so, you’ve been celebrating it seven months now!!!!! 😉 just as well! May you celebrate it each and every day of your lives – with love.

  7. Congratulations to you and Right Angle, Frank! That’s an impressive number of years to swirl around the dance floor together.

As a math-phobe, I have to admit that I find these number posts fascinating! Thanks for the education, Frank. And the fact that there is no quiz.

  9. What a romantic ol’ thing you are, Frank my man! 🙂 Congrats to you and Mrs. A. Behind every good man is a really good woman, so Mrs. A. must be outstanding. I was going to mention Psalm 37 (one of my favorite psalms) but on my reread I discovered you beat me to it. In any case, happy “early” or “belated” anniversary (whichever way you want to look at it).

    • E-Tom,
Many thanks for the kind words & flattery. 😉 In this case, your greeting would not be “early” because our 37th was last April Glad I included one of your favorite psalms. … so hi many years is it for WW. & you.

  10. Congratulations to you and the Mrs. for a beautiful occasion – it’s the specialness of a relationship and what you have achieved together that so few people today will be able to enjoy themselves. It’s a wonderful celebration!

  11. You’ve listed far too many #37 notes. I didn’t want to add too much pressure to my brain of 37%. LOLOL This is a fun way to bring up an anniversary even if it’s 7 months later. No sense in celebrating just one day. I celebrate my birthday for a whole month. I may have to adapt the whole year version for my special occasions.
Many years of special moments to you and your beloved … May your days always be filled with love. Congrtaulations to you both !!!! 😍 💖
