On December 2014

How did it get so late so soon? Its night before its afternoon. December is here before its June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon? (Dr. Seuss)

In Latin, Decem- means ten, so it was the last month when there were only ten – but at least it is still the last month of the calendar year

December, the month with the shortest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest daylight hours of the year in the Southern Hemisphere

December, ushering winter to the Northern Hemisphere, but summer to the Southern Hemisphere

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December;
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly, I wished the morrow; vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow – sorrow for the lost Leonore –
For the rare and radiant maiden who the angels name Lenore –
Nameless here for evermore. (Edgar Allan Poe, The Raven)

December, the month providing the Yule Moon

Every December, I host a tree-trimming party. I serve chili with cornbread and lots of good wine. It’s a wonderful party, and it shows how much adults like to play. (Maya Angelou)

Men are April when they woo, December when they wed. Maids are May when they are maids, but the sky changes when they are wives. (William Shakespeare)

December embraces safe toys & gifts, writing a business plan, spiritual literacy, and food service safety while promoting ties and stress-free families

A magical thing and sweet to remember.

  1. Give me the cool sexiness of Julie London, Frank. I love her pipes and yeah, she’s eye candy.

I checked out Operation Santa Paws. Thurber was a shelter dog. He was found abandoned at the side of a road in Tiburon, California. It was estimated that he was about 8 months old. My sister pounced on adopting him.

  2. I love Stevie Wonder’s “I Can See the Sun in Late December” and I play George Winston’s “Winter” year round. Who doesn’t love Norah Jones and Julie London? My daughter’s birthday is December 24th, which simply adds to an already very special month. I thoroughly enjoy this month. Thank you for such a wealth of detail, Frank. I am fascinated with all the numerical facts. 🙂

    • Lauren,
Welcome first-time commenter. Julie London is not only a popular choice in this post, she’s a hit in other posts when I’ve used her. There’s something about the songs from the crooner era that seem timeless.

  3. December for me brings to mind the final two stanzas of the song “Try To Remember” from the musical comedy “The Fantasticks:”

Deep in December it’s nice to remember
Although you know the snow will follow
Deep in December it’s nice to remember
Without a hurt, the heart is hollow

Deep in December it’s nice to remember
The fire of September that made you mellow
Deep in December our hearts should remember
    Then follow
