My ex husband’s older brother went blind thanks to a genetic inherited condition, a combination of his parents genes rendered him blind at an early age. He rode a tandem bike in the Australia Paralympic games with a sighted person on the back. I get up at 3am every morning and can now walk from the bed to the kitchen in the pitch dark without banging into anything. The message is that we humans are incredibly adaptive if we want to be. You lose a sense, you hone the remaining senses. I think John Milton’s quote is most poignant here. Learning to adapt to what life throws at you is the lesson of the day. If you can do that, you will live a good life. I am in awe of people who accept and bypass their disabilities and do amazing things.
