On Exploring an Abstract Russian

Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul. (Wassily Kandinsky)

The artist must train not only his eye but also his soul. (Wassily Kandinsky)

There is no must in art because art is free. (Wassily Kandinsky)

An empty canvas is a living wonder… far lovelier than certain pictures. (Wassily Kandinsky)

December 16th was the first time I’ve ever heard of Wassily Kandinsky, the Russian artist born on that date in 1866. Truth be known, it was Google’s Doodle header on that day that caught my attention, thus my first exposure to Wassily Kandinsky. Soon thereafter, I was off to YouTube searching for a tribute of his work.

Art is a matter of taste, so I hope you enjoy this work. Besides, wonderful music accompanies the images.

  1. Such a genius…
The quotes are remarkable… If you haven’t still done so I recommend you a book by Kandinsky called “On the spiritual in art”… You can find it online!.
Happy New Year ahead dear Frank. Best wishes. Aquileana 😀

  2. Kandinsky being one of my very favorite painters of the modern period [with Klee being at the very top of that list] I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your post today! Here’s a beautiful quote by him: “Lend your ears to music, open your eyes to painting, and… stop thinking! Just ask yourself whether the work has enabled you to ‘walk about’ into a hitherto unknown world. If the answer is yes, what more do you want?” So true…

  3. I need glasses. I read this as “On Exploring a Black Russian”. I thought I was invited to a cocktail party! Wonderful art, beautiful music, just about makes up for the lack of that cocktail…just about…

  4. Wonderful, Frank! Trying.not to be a pissy know-it-all, I have to say that Kandinsky has been a favorite for many years, only outshined, maybe,….(as Marina implies,) by Paul Klee, whose “taking a line for a walk” I used to use with my students in drawing class! Explore..explore…a great idea!

    • Cynthia,
Ah ha … your depth of knowledge about artists is far beyond mine, so cheers to you even knowing Kandinsky (as compared to me). Heck, I’ve never heard of Paul Klee, so that’s twice in one day for me .. that means I’ve taken notice. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  5. At the airport, Frank, trying to return to NYC, but my red eye flight’s delayed. I can’t watch the video due to YouTube crashing my phone, but I’m familiar with Kandinsky’s work. I’m a fan. Glad that you’ve discovered him!
