On Exploring Gobi

The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts. (C. S. Lewis)

My work is all about adventure and teamwork in some of the most inhospitable jungles, mountains and deserts on the planet. If you aren’t able to look after yourself and each other, then people die. (Bear Grylls)

True friendship multiplies the good in life and divides its evils. Strive to have friends, for life without friends is like life on a desert island… to find one real friend in a lifetime is good fortune; to keep him is a blessing. (Baltasar Gracian)

What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well. (Antoine de Saint-Exupery)

Saving the world via medical research or going off to Gobi Desert to dust off dinosaur eggs is what I thought I might be doing when I was a kid, and I’d love to bring those interests to a show like ‘E.R.’ or ‘The West Wing,’ or a movie like ‘Jurassic Park.’ (Morgan Fairchild)

For whatever reason, I enjoy geography. I’m sure geography during elementary school provided my first exposure to the Gobi Desert. Although this expansive, arid region found in two countries is fifth largest desert in the world, there’s something intriguing about this desert. It has sand, but it’s more rocky with mountains and steppes … yet it as grasslands for livestock. As the world’s northern-most desert, it has very hot summers, and brutally cold winter.

Enjoy this trip to the Gobi Desert, yet to me, the music sets the tone for this interesting area.

  1. Those two people looking out on the foothills… that was my favorite image. Loved the music behind that video. I seem to remember studying the Gobi in school too, but I don’t remember the details.

  2. When your right your right, Frank. And you nailed it with this one. Nature is the great educator, manipulator, and ‘moon doggy’ shaman; not a secret but often blindsided by intellectual egos Bravo! Bow to the audience, Frank.

  3. An interesting, exotic choice, Frank. I will have to update something or other on my computer, though because I was having issues with the video. I’m pretty sure the dessert isn’t as green as it appeared on my screen!

  4. I’m with you in liking geography, but deserts aren’t my favorite after the daily sand blasting I got when I visited Maun, Botswana.

The education quote by C.S. Lewis is a keeper.

  5. Anyone who doesn’t have complete and utter fascination with the natural world around them is either a narcissist or something else not to be trusted. You are officially in the circle of trust now Mr Frank.

  6. Is it just me, Frank, pining for a Saturday Morning Cartoon post, but that guy’s voice at the start of the video, about two minutes in during the duet and at the second duet around the 3:17 mark sounded a helluva lot like Popeye.

Loved the camel making the most of its closeup at 4:46.

  7. Isn’t it an amazing place Frank! I watched the video and stayed on to watch the Mongolian music segment at the Proms. I am fascinated by the place and the people – so different to anything we can imagine and seemingly much happier with their lot! I’d go if I could!!
