On a South American Wonder

Water is the driving force of all nature. (Leonardo da Vinci)

I love the sounds and the power of pounding water, whether it is the waves or a waterfall. (Mike May)

The point is that when I see a sunset or a waterfall or something, for a split second it’s so great, because for a little bit I’m out of my brain, and it’s got nothing to do with me. I’m not trying to figure it out, you know what I mean? And I wonder if I can somehow find a way to maintain that mind stillness. (Chris Evans)

There is a hidden message in every waterfall. It says, if you are flexible, falling will not hurt you! (Mehmet Murat ildan)

Just as a waterfall grows slower and more lightly suspended as it plunges down, so the great man of action tends to act with greater calmness than his tempestuous desires prior to the deed would lead one to expect. (Friedrich Nietzsche)

One will never find in the waterfall of sights anything else than the Illusion of Life, which falls in torrents on the granite rocks of the souls. (Sorin Cerin)

Friends of ours just returned from an Argentina-to-Chile cruise. The day before boarding the ship, they took a tour of a place I didn’t know along the border of Argentina and Brazil. Once I saw this video, I knew this was a fitting post for us to explore … and the music is a perfect match for the scenery.

Have you heard of these? Have you been there? Which of the quotes stuck you?

  1. Drones can give us a front row seat at the best show on earth it seems! Aren’t they spectacular! I had heard of them, but never seen this view before – I wonder what the noise is like when you are in the vicinity. The sea is my favourite place on earth and a good waterfall, like this comes a close second! I like the second quote! For me the natural world is my church.

  2. I saw many waterfalls during my traveling but Iguazu is really the most impressive one. I loved the Zabesi’s as well… or even the Salto del Angél in Venezuela (less large but extremely high!)
I wish you a lovely w.e. dear Frank… I’m traveling to the Moroccan’ desert in few hours!
    (thanks for the wonderful video…)

  3. Iguazú Falls. Uruguayan short story author (poet and playwright) Horacio Quiroga wrote a dark story about a man’s last hours adrift on the river that drains at these falls. He got a snake bite by unwittingly stepping on a yaracacusú and floated in his canoe for hours seeking help along the river that drains at these falls until he could breathe no more. The story is “A la deriva.” I think you can find it in translation online. This brings back lesson plan memories…i easily taught this story a couple dozen times.

  4. Very impressive falls. I’d like to see that someday. It reminded me of the trip we took on the Maid of the Mist at Niagara. This is one of those perfect uses of drones with HD cameras. I like the nearly full-circle rainbows.

  5. I haven’t heard of them. They are spectacular, but I think even a small waterfall is, too. 🙂
I think waterfalls are spectacular and awe-inspiring, but I like the feeling I get from simply walking along waterways–river walks, around a pond in a park, walking on the beach and hearing the waves.

  6. The raw rage of a single rain drop magnified beyond recognition. Am a sucker for a waterfall, just as am for a babbling brook.

Have a good weekend and week to come. It is -10C this morning, so am packing a sack and getting out of a Frigidville, hopefully spring will be here on my return .

    • Calvin,
The sound of moving water seems to transport else elsewhere. The sound is important because a large river can be quiet. Meanwhile, I think this is going to be the last dose of a wintry blast for me … and hopefully for you.

  7. Now there was some of Mother Nature’s drama at it’s best! I prefer more sedate waterfalls as I imagine the noise is deafening. Loved the video, but think I’ll keep my distance. 🙂

  8. I’ve heard of Iguazu falls, but never seen it. Beautiful. Besides being a necessity of life, water does play a major part in so many ways – not to mention how much property values go up for waterfront or even water views. (I haven’t got either, but go to a nearby park frequently to walk my dog along the bluff trail and see the sea. Some days you can hear the surf roaring long before getting to the part of the trail where the view is.) Guess I’d have to go with the Mike May quote.

    • LB,
Great points … after all, throughout civilization, growth and expansion has involved major waterways … and there’s something special about the roar … then again, Iguazu would be thunder!

  9. These falls are amazing.
Frank! I had to go away and see if I could find out what the yellow water is all about. Is it natural, or man-made pollution?
Well, it appears not an easily forthcoming answer. Although, Yellow Fever pops up a lot.
The Leonardo quote is my fave!

  10. This was just magnificent. It would be surreal to see that in person. I flew over Niagara in a helicopter and would want to do the same here. But until that day hopefully comes, that drone did a beautiful job of capturing its beauty. Thanks for posting this 🙂

  11. Thank you Thank you Thank you.

This is beautiful. The music a perfect match for the view. I sat dumbfounded and watched / listened twice.

The sea, the shore and the waves are one of my favorite things. The sounds of water my favorite sounds.

  12. Wow! I wasn’t at all familiar with these falls! They are unbelievable! I like all the quotes, but I guess “Water is the driving force of all nature” is the best. I was born under a water sign and I spend as much time as I can near the ocean! We have moving water in our backyard and I need the sound to sleep at this point…and yet we are experiencing an epic drought! Water is very much on my mind!

Water is absolutely the driving force of nature … and the role it’s played in human history is substantial. Cheers to your love for water … and woo hooo …. cheers to a fellow Aquarian!
