On Exploring Creativity

Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. (Steve Jobs, Founder: Apple Computers)

Passion is one great force that unleashes creativity, because if you’re passionate about something, then you’re more willing to take risks. (Yo-Yo Ma, cellist)

The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources. (Albert Einstein, scientist)

Creativity is not just for artists. It’s for business people looking for a new way to close a sale; it’s for engineers trying to solve a problem; it’s for parents who want their children to see the world in more than one way. (Twyla Tharp, dancer/choreographer)

Anxiety is the handmaiden of creativity. (T. S. Eliot, playwright)

Creativity is piercing the mundane to find the marvelous. (Bill Moyers, journalist)

To me there’s no creativity without boundaries. If you’re gonna write a sonnet, it’s 14 lines, so it’s solving the problem within the container. (Lorne Michaels, Producer: SNL)

The human brain is one factor that differentiates humans from other animals. Through music, art, engineering, science, and other forms, this complex three-pound mass of interconnected neurons delivers many expressions of human ingenuity – and wait until you see these strandbeests.

  1. Ah, Frank, what a post! Thank you, my friend. Jansen’s work is amazing! Creativity is a mystery to me, or as WA Mozart says: “When I am ….. completely myself, entirely alone… or during the night when I cannot sleep, it is on such occasions that my ideas flow best and most abundantly. Whence and how these ideas come I know not nor can I force them.” Happy weekend! 🙂

  2. I remember when I thought I wasn’t creative. I couldn’t paint like my father or draw in any way like my nieces or even create a display like Mick did (as if that’s the only way to be creative!!)
I was always a follow-the-pattern-made-by-someone-else girl. Thankfully, over the years I’ve come to realize there is more to this creativity business!

Those strandbeests are the coolest ever. I remember seeing this video somewhere awhile ago. So worth re-watching!

Have a most marvellous week-end Monsieur Frank!

  3. Great post. I was thinking about some of these connections earlier this morning. I remember seeing a video of the strandbeasts before, although I didn’t remember what they were called. 🙂

    • Merril,
“Strandbeasts” is not a common word we encounter on a daily basis … heck, nor weekly or monthly. I too have seen this sometime in the past – heck, I fairly sure I previously used this video here some time ago … but it’s still extraordinary.

  4. The why.
Why do I like an organge? ……….I don’t know I just do. Sometimes why is a question we ask to much of. It has it’s limitations. But I do it nonetheless.

    Have a creative weekend, Frank.

  5. What a great video, Frank. I’ve seen another of these videos, showing only the grown, more independent creature, but this one showed a bit of the evolution, which was wonderful.

  6. Strandbeests. Remarkable. I’m reminded of a thought I’ve had before, that many people are compelled by their nature to do what they do rather than by conscious volition. Albert Einstein comes to mind – his curiosity about physics was apparent even when he was a child and fascinated by the phenomenon of a prism. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates too. Their success was, I think, not driven so much by a longing for wealth as a need for creative catharsis. There is irony in the fact that imperfect human beings are the pinnacle of creativity.

    • Jim,
First of all, I’m glad you saw these because I knew your engineering mind would appreciate this creation. “Creative catharsis” … and excellent description of this video … and I’m with you on your supportive examples. When selecting the quotes, I tried to not limit creativity to the arts.

  7. Love the beach creatures. How cool? Very Cool!
I feel lucky to have found a career that involves my creativity. Otherwise, I’d be a starving artist, photographing &/or painting graffiti and designing gowns no one can wear or buy.
Working 12 hour days (soon to be 14), Frank, so I’m play catch up out here in blog world.

  8. Creativity has no limits… is amazing to see this “things” moving around by themselves… I’m only concerned about the materials used and the proximity with the sea… there are the Pacific Trash Vortex to feel urged about caring for ecology… but I guess this artist knows what he’s doing with eventual plastic-waste.

  9. Thanks so much for the Creativity quotes. My wife (who I’m very proud of for finishing her novel!) and I enjoyed discussing them and agree they should be posted on our refrigerator for daily viewing.
