On Exploring Relationships

You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection. (Buddha, spiritual leader)

Trust is the glue of life. It’s the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It’s the foundational principle that holds all relationships. (Stephen Covey, business leader)

Our minds influence the key activity of the brain, which then influences everything; perception, cognition, thoughts and feelings, personal relationships; they’re all a projection of you. (Deepak Chopra, philosopher)

People are basically the same the world over. Everybody wants the same things – to be happy, to be healthy, to be at least reasonably prosperous, and to be secure. They want friends, peace of mind, good family relationships, and hope that tomorrow is going to be even better than today. (Zig Ziglar, author)

The best thing to hold onto in life is each other. (Audrey Hepburn, actress)

Everything that I said I’d do, Like make the world brand new, And take the time for you, I just got lost and slept right through the dawn, And the world spins madly on. (Steven Tannen, Deborah R. Talan, songwriters)

  1. I’ve watched this piece a couple of times before Frank – it always leaves me deeply touched The person who drew it has depth – and some understanding/experience of the complexity of relationships. That’s what the video says to me. 🙂

  2. Agree!
Then how does is it become so twisted? I mean why don’t we all end up at the same place/thought?
The video says to me..Why is it just about 2 people? That people only think about people.. ..about their loves, pursuits and cares.
Sorry, Frank! I’m a bit pessimistic tonight!
My heart’s on my sleeve. This is a great post as usual.

  4. The Zig Ziglar quote is wonderful. I often said something quite similar in my classes when talking about different cultures and how we are not so different, but our solutions to different problems are.

A for the video…I saw that the man imagined the woman to be something she was not or that maybe she was always changing and he could not quite grasp her true nature. When, in the end, he saw her true nature (she became more solid for him), he rejected her truth. I don’t know why I saw him as driving the relationship…it could just as well have been her being changeable and him trying to understand. It just felt as if he was trying to pin her down. When he finally did, he didn’t really want that version of her.

Amazing how you can read so much into an animation!

  5. definitely enjoy & deeply appreciate love ones in the present moment for we never know when we may find ourselves separated, either intentionally or by fate.

  6. I have loved this song for quite a while and never saw this video. What a wonderful illustration of really deep lyrics. I think it was probably first written about a male-female love relationship and the presumption is that the male was not particularly conscious of what he had in that love until she was gone. Perhaps in the end we also see that when one person leaves a relationship there is loss on both sides. I think there are really multiple ways to look at it, but the idea that significant relationships are often broken very carelessly resulting in regret. Brilliantly done! I’m so glad you shared it, Frank. It’s certainly thought provoking.

  7. You have titled this post Relationships, Frank, but I think the quotations might also be seen as attempts to parse life’s meaning. Especially the one by Zig Zigler. He seems to think that people will find contentment when they have achieved safety (financial security implied) and comfortable relationships. I rain on this parade reluctantly, but rain I must.

Back in 1930 the famous economist John Maynard Keynes wrote an essay predicting that society would, because of efficiencies of automation and the industrial revolution, evolve to a work week of a mere 15 hours. He imagined that most people would then be content to spend most of their leisure on the arts, music, philosophy, fun. He was wrong.

The human spirit is fundamentally competitive in nature and goals achieved result in satiety and ennui, and new goals are almost always sought. Consider the rich. Even one billion dollars is not enough. Some find pleasure in politics, e.g., Michael Bloomberg, Sheldon Adelson and Donald Trump. Some plunge into expensive hobbies, like lion hunting with cross-bows for example. In fact, consider politics in general. Consider war. Consider competing religions. Even the Dali Lama, instead of retiring into self-contemplation, travels the world lecturing on perceived wisdom.

Yes, I agree, relationships are essential to happiness. But keeping them fresh, aye, that’s the challenge! Half of all marriages fail, and I suspect that half of those that do not fail, probably ought to.

Now the rain is over. 🙂

    • Jim,
My aim for this post was to feature the video – which is unquestionably about relationships. However, as the comments show, its interpretation varies. So with the quotes, I selected various aspects of relationships as a way to introduce the video with a common word linking all the quotes. You broadened relationships, which to me, was a perfect way to cap the post.
