Opinions in the Shorts: Vol. 276

Obviously, the Running Late edition.

At last count, Dance: The Musical – Act 2 had 22 songs. Meanwhile, the theater crew is working overtime to prepare for next week’s Act 3 (Tuesday, 9:30 pm Eastern US). It’s a little tricky,

  • Songs titles with dancer, dances, or compound words including dance
  • (EX) Dancehall is an acceptable compound word, but happy dance is not acceptable because it is not a compound word.
  • Exception: dancehall, dance hall, dance-hall, dancefloor, dance-floor, and dance floor are acceptable – but this exception is not applicable to other compound words

No Explore post this weekend. Not only was this post late, I had a poor week with visiting other blogs … so hopefully this weekend will help me get back on the track. I’m even behind on replying to comments on the previous post.

Evangelist Pat Robertson recently blamed the recent drop in the stock market on the ills of Planned Parenthood .. but he changed his mind to blaming homosexuals.

Earlier this week Queen Elizabeth became the long-running British monarch. To most of us, including myself, she is the only queen we’ve ever known. A tip of the cap to her! Here’s a pictorial of her life.

How many people realize the difference between staring/having a conversation and having the final word?

Jackie at Breathe to Write is having a birthday party on September 12th … so make your calendar to stop by that day.

As Kim Davis (Kentucky County Clerk) continues to make the news and serve as a martyr for loud, this situation is full of ridiculous comments by people who should know better. Being ignorant can be excused by not knowing better, which is different that stupidity.

Yes, Judge Bunning did the right thing in letting her (Kim Davis) out of jail because his order was being fulfilled. I wonder how long it will take her to return to jail.

Yes, I believe Hillary Clinton using a private server was wrong. I also believe all government business should be conducted on government servers, thus any allowance by government is a poor choice. Even though her apology and acknowledge is predictably a bit late, I also believe much of the hub-bub is politically driven, and a waste of taxpayer dollars.

This delivers an important message: Donald Trump (R-NY), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Sarah Palin (R-AK) shared the stage at the same event.

I missed the first Republican “debate” of the campaign season, and I also plan on missing next week’s second encounter hosted by CNN. It’s simply a waste of my time.

In last week’s OITS, Alisha made this wonderful (worth repeating) comment about the US building a border wall . So, we build a wall against Mexico… then another against Canada… then 2 more to keep the rising ocean levels from flooding our coastal cities… then a dome as a futuristic missile defense system… and voila! We’ll officially live in an Ameri-Can! I’m sure read a sci-fi book about this.

For those worried about the polls, here’s something to ponder: The entire college football season (regular season and bowl games) will be completed before voters cast a ballot.

Here’s a two-fer to send you into the weekend: an unused classic from Act 2 and one of my favorite music videos Have a safe weekend and in the words of Garrison Keillor, Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

  1. One of your favourite music video clips is also one of mine. I still watch the performance with great amusement and wonder how Paul Simon can keep a straight face, whilst clowning around beside Chevy Chase, throughout the whole duration of the clip. Enjoy your weekend, Frank. 🙂

  2. Good OPINIONS on Kim Davis, Hillary Clinton, the Shared Stage, and college football.

Normally I would disagree with your decision to skip this week’s GOP debate, except that I plan to do the same because of my disgust with having to watch ten serious political candidates be made to look like clowns by Donald Trump. HAVE HIS SUPPORTERS NO SHAME?!!!

Concerning Alisha’s comment in last week’s OITS, and its relationship to the read: ‘The trend in births by unauthorized immigrants,’ where the writer points out that: “About 295,000 babies were born to unauthorized-immigrant parents in 2013, making up 8% of the 3.9 million U.S. births that year, according to a new, preliminary Pew Research Center estimate based on the latest available federal government data. This was a decline from a peak of 370,000 in 2007.” . . . . . My question is this: “HOW BIG OF A DEAL IS THIS in relationship to the estimated 150 billion dollars it would cost to build the wall that the GOP candidates say is needed to secure the (southern) border?”

    • Tim,
Glad to see you won’t be wasting your time with the upcoming debate. Now, I expect you to follow through with your proclamation.

Glad you read the Pew article from my reads list. Of course, one could extrapolate the number for the effect on a future population, but I won’t. Keep in mind that building a wall plays to the base.

  3. I saw Palin singing Trump’s praises on CNN last weekend, and I think I threw up a little in my mouth. But I’ll probably check out the next debate. It’s like catnip. I can’t stay away.

Great pictorial on Queen Elizabeth. Thanks to Elyse’s recent post, I now know she’s one feisty monarch. 🙂

  4. Hillery did wrong and continued to insist it was politics. I remember Bill doing the same thing with an intern. The lack of integrity is not something that should be casually ignored. Loved the videos and the Queen.

  5. Luv the “You Can call Me Al” vid, & luv Alisha’s OTIS comment! I’ve got my song lined up for the next act of “Dance”, & will try to make Jackie’s party tomorrow. I checked out her blog, but much like trying to watch the Springstien video, my computer is forever loading.
    Have a great weekend!

  6. I’m touched that my comment managed to amuse you for an entire week! Also, I’m rather amazed to think that humanity may be nearing the point of global population decrease… I must admit, amongst my peers (who are nearing the end of prime birthing age), I would estimate a good 1/3 are childless, with plans to remain so forever. I have to wonder if Europe and North America will ever be begging for migrants, to rebalance their populations…

    • Alisha,
You comment was quite worthy, so cheers to your effort! I’ve got the feeling this isn’t the first time. Thanks for sharing your population perspective about your friends and peers. Very interesting. Something tells me I have another population article for next week’s Interesting Reads – but I’m not sure.

  7. I am happy to see “You Can Call Me Al” as I go into the weekend. I haven’t seen that video in years and I have always loved it. I thought of you this week, Frank, when Rachel Maddow did a very amusing essay highlighting Sarah Palin’s discussion of the Iran nuclear deal and the fact that it was a string of words that didn’t make sense. It was just the best! Although I think it really should have been more alarming to me. I also watched a good PBS special about Queen Elizabeth and think of her remarkable place in history! Hope you have a good weekend, and I’ll see you again Tuesday night! 🙂

  8. Thank you Frank for mentioning my birthday bash! I appreciate it. 🙂

Also, I’m a fan of the Queen, she’s got style…and I’m not meaning her clothes! Have a great weekend my friend!

  9. I have been calling my sons “maroons” for years! 😉
Love the videos. Gotta love Chevy & Paul! I can’t believe Bruce wasn’t chosen for Act 2!!!
Can’t talk about your politics and keep a straight face (and can’t about our own, either)
Sept.11 was my Dad’s, is my sister’s, one of my cousin’s, my sister’s neighbour, my former colleague’s, the daughter of a colleage’s… birthdays! (to name but a few….)

  10. though i’m not, or no longer, a chevy chase fan, i love that video.

also, i believe francis ford coppola directed “dancing in the dark.” i could probably look it up in less time to type that i’m not 100% about that and it could have been someone else of an equal name, but it’s easier to say something you’re not sure about, convince people of it, and maybe later say that you weren’t sure. if it works for the GOP, it can work for me.

  11. Huckabee and Cruz were literally wrestling to get Kim Davis hand in hand on the stage at that “Getting out of Jail” event last week. I WOULD like a wall to be built…Us on one side and those peeps on the other.

    • Cayman,
I laughed last week when both Huckabee & Cruz visited Davis on the same day … but only one of them was on stage with her after her release. Regarding the wall, good news is they have built it and see most of us on the wrong side.
