On Easing a Return

Although I’m recovering from various aspects of life, I’m trying to ease myself back into the Land of WordPress. It’s not easy. Besides getting back into the swing of my life as a volunteer, ballroom dancer, blogger, and whatever else life brings my why, I’m suffering from jet lag and a withdraw from a travel med that is a story in itself. After all, this is where I’ve been.

When cruising, I use the TransDerm patch (Scapalomine) for my motion sickness. It works well, but there is one possible side effect that I’m the lucky recipient … I get motion sickness 36-48 hours after coming off the drug – Woo Hoo! … and it’s very, very bad!!!!

I’ve learned to use over-the-counter meds to step-down the body, but also during this time, I must limit my computer time because the flashing screen quickly aggravates motion sickness … as does watching television, driving a car, and (or course) moving in a circle. In other words, no fun.

But hey – life will be normal soon – which means time to use this button.

  1. Welcome back. Hope you feel better soon! That is awful to have motion sickness as a side effect of using something for motion sickness. When I was a child, my mom always dosed us with the disgusting Dramamine liquid before we got on a plane.

I have friends who have been in Spain and Portugal recently. I’m sure you had a great time.

  2. Welcome back to your virtual world. Your trip looks fabulous, at least, when you track it on your map. Hope you’ll be posting some pics and sharing a few tales. Sounds like the post-motion sickness is easing but at least you were spared on your trip xx Rowena

Glad you’re over the whirls. Now, it’s little more than a good party story. (I try to keep this in mind whenever life brings a case of “the whirls.”)

  5. So, while I was sleeping you sailed back into town and revealed all! “Wow!” to the cruise Frank. How wonderful is that! The side effect will pass, the memories will stay. I became profoundly deaf after my last long haul flight and have all but forgotten the weeks of discomfort that followed but the wonderful memories linger on 🙂 Did you go to visit family or just to see the sights? I hope you will share some of the adventure with us. [No pressure!] So nice to see you back!

    • Pauline,
Thanks for the warm greeting. This was a see-the-sights vacation, and one planned almost 11 months ago. Simply a wonderful trip with many outstanding places. We took hundreds of pics, but will condense them into a book to show friends. I will share some pics here through some posts … and I’m one not to publish too many pics.

Today has been a good day, and I think my motion effect is done (keep in mind we returned Friday evening).

  7. Welcome back, Frank. You were dearly missed! And, definitely not by me, if I am to judge by the comments above…
So sorry you are suffering. I wish I could tell you I understand, but I don’t. But I do wish you to unspin very soon… xo

  8. Welcome back, Frank. What a fun trip — I look forward to more info on it. Sorry about the motion sickness, though. I used to get it, but don’t often any more (sucking on hard candy helped — as did forgetting about it)

Looking forward to lots of pictures!

    • Elyse,
Thanks. As a fake medical professional, I imagine you appreciate that I know how to combat the withdraw. I went off Friday night, so Sunday was the worst, Monday the second worst – but I weather the storm … so I consider it as now over!

I imagine I get a few posts together with pics!

  9. Welcome back, Frank! Sorry to hear that your vacation exacted some revenge on you, but from reading the comments you’ve written today, it sounds like you’re now doing much better. By this weekend you might even be well enough to tune into college football.

    • Lame,
Great hearing from you! You are correct about the watching football. Not only Saturday, but also Sunday … especially Sunday was that is when the effect started to kick in. I would have a game on, but it was more about listening with glances while cleaning the house. You are also right that the fact that I’m on the computer must mean I’m doing much better – and I’m considering it to be over! Do you have a moving date?

  10. I’ve never heard of this side effect, Frank. You poor guy! What a wonderful trip and I’m sure you’ll share more when you feel much better. I hope you’ll feel much better very soon! It’s really nice to have you back. 🙂

    • Debra,
A wonderful trip indeed and I will be sharing more. Feeling fine so far today, thus I think the stuff is out of my system. Hey hey …. I’ve weathered the storm with minimal damage. The side effect is in the fine print on the info one gets with drugs, but it does say MAY … and I’m one of the lucky ones it’s meant for.

  11. That’s quite a trip! I guess it makes the illness worth it? If you’re a ballroom dancer, you could get a job on a cruise ship, right, dancing with single women? I think I read that somewhere . . .

A wonderful trip indeed … and will do bits of the trip over multiple posts. Meanwhile, I have heard of single men being employed by the cruise lines to dance with the ladies .. .and I imagine they also have a list of don’ts. 😉

  12. To get over your motion sickness med withdrawal as quickly as possible (1) avoid looking at Donald Trump’s poll numbers on your computer, (2) avoid watching Fox News on TV.

In addition, (1) let me drive on Saturday, and (2) avoid circular routes around Nippert Stadium looking for a restroom.

    • Tim,
On the cruise ship, access to US news was limited, so I had to stomach bits of Fox News, but I’m back into natural avoidance mode … and I still maintain Trump isn’t going to be the nominee.

  13. I was actually wondering where you were Frank. but I did figure you probably went on vacation, and you did. I hope you had such a wonderful time. And it’s always hard to get back into the swing of things, but try to by easing in slowly. You’ll get the hang of it soon enough :). Glad to have you back.

    • Val,
I can honestly say the step-down process is over, thus everything is normal. After all, I was very carefully from Friday night through Monday mid-day (the critical period). Nonetheless, I will get back in the swing soon with some trip pics.

It can be rough … the first two times were absolutely horrible, but once we’ve determined the problem, a solution could happen … and this step-down was one of the better ones!

Bengals 6-0 for only the third time ever … but never 7-0 … and the Steelers are next after the bye.

Well said … but although the side effect is bad, the effect of the meds is to allow me to take in many more joys … so dealing with the side effects is a small price. BTW … see my Walktober post.

  16. Dear aFrank,
Sorry about the sea sickness. I must say I am blessed that I don’t have that going on when I cruise(17 – now, since our last one). I’m sure you’ve looked into many meds. Eventually, they should have a real good one for you.
Now flying, on the other, hand is my nemesis. My tummy tumbles around and becomes an olympic gymnast. Everyone has something. 😄
The ports all sound great. I can’t wait to read more. I would love to go to these ports but the flights turn me off. I’ll enjoy you travel and will be perfectly happy with that.
    Glad you’re back ….
    Isadora 😎
