All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware. (Martin Buber, philosopher)
The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. (Saint Augustine)
Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not. (Ralph Waldo Emerson, poet)
I have no idea why and how this place captured my attention, but Bratislava, Slovakia is on my bucket list of places to visit … so please come along for a short visit.
Have you ever been to Bratislava? Would you consider going? What’s the less-than-obvious place on your bucket list?
What a beautiful place. Like something out of a fairy story xx Rowena

Rowena,
“Fairy tale” is a good description … and to me, we could add “mysterious” or “intriguing” to Eastern Europe. Any place out of the ordinary would you like to visit?

I’d really like to visit two places. The City of Cork in County Cork, Ireland and Islay in the Scottish Hebrides both as family I’ve researched in detail came from there. When I do my research, I really like to walk in their shoes, which is so much harder when you’ve never been there and it’s quite an expensive trip from Australia.

A tad expensive of a trip for shore. Nonetheless, thanks for sharing and hope the future gets you there. … Meanwhile, I haven’t been to either Ireland or Scotland, but they are on the list!

I have never considered Bratislava Frank – it looks interesting and intriguing. It’s such a mysterious thing, what captures our attention and interest isn’t it. I would go to Prague if the opportunity ever arose.

Pauline,
Bratislava isn’t far from Vienna, thus a stop for some river cruises. I think the cities of Eastern Europe offer intrigue … such as Bratislava, Vienna, Prague, and more … and from what I hear from others, many either love Prague or want to go – so many support your thought!

Good Morning in Connecticut. Glad to put another idea in your head for a librarian to look into. 😉 Do you have any surprises on your bucket list?

Merril,
Thanks … I can see getting a day stop on a river cruise. For me, I’ll have to make sure the itinerary stops there!

Interesting choice Frank. It looks beautiful but I wonder how it came to your attention and if there is something special that draws you there.

George,
I can say that there’s nothing that I know of that sparks my attraction. The only spark that I can remember is seeing a new for teachers at English-speaking schools. The “Where?” moment must have stuck.

It looks beautiful, Frank. We visited Slovenia, next door, and it was beautiful (and not terribly expensive). So I’d certainly be game (although I don’t travel much any more).
Eastern Europe is a jewel that we didn’t get to see for so long. Go for it!

I like the first quote so my suggestion; forget the riverboat cruise — you won’t see much — and spend that money on a month long apartment rental. Use only public transportation. Eat were the locals eat. You’ll see a lot more, learn a lot more and never feel quite so rushed to check off a box on some bucket list.

I don’t really have a bucket list. It just seems to set you up for disappointment unless you can make it to every destination on the list – and there is a good possibility that something not on a bucket list is going to be great too. Case in point, Bratislava. 🙂

I’m with X on bucket lists, but that said, somebody did a terrific job on the travel clip. Maybe we should fire the diplomats and hire publicists in their place. (Just kidding.) 🙂

But Jim, the diplomats and the publicists have different objectives when it comes to their relationship with us…one sells us to the host country, and one sells the host country to us! I’ll admit, though, that the ad men for cruises probably have the bigger budget….

India has captivated me ever since reading Life of Pi many years ago. The book pays it short shrift, but I read into the place after reading it for the umpteenth time. As for an obvious choice, I haven’t been to Ireland yet. But it’s on my list.

Their marketing people are fabulous! The combination of old world and new is charming. Having Finnish blood coursing through these aging veins makes me long to head to that part of the world. 🙂
