All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware. (Martin Buber, philosopher)
Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not. (Ralph Waldo Emerson, poet)
Wherever you go, go with all your heart. (Confucius, philosopher)
Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends. (Maya Angelou, poet)
The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. (Saint Augustine, theologian)
I enjoy travelling, so this Explore takes us on a 4-minute trip to 30 countries through the beauty of time-lapse photography. Sit back and enjoy because you’ll see places you recognize, places you may have been, places you may want to go, and places that you may never see.
Beautiful places, but I enjoyed the quotations just as much as the photography–perhaps more. 😉

Dearest aFA, It is going to rain 2 inches this weekend in Portland. I’ve found my passport, dug out the luggage and am dreaming of those all those places captured with red (or white) tiled roofs where no moss grows in-between. Maybe Greece. Maybe Italy. Doesn’t really matter does it…when the coffee is hot and the view is superb. Your friend, RR

Frank. Just wanted to say, if this inspires one to travel to dream destinations. Either around the world or over the next ridge. Please, please, please. Pack a good camera. As smart phones and tablets don’t cut the mustard. I know of such people, they live across the way.

Calvin,
Over the ridge reminds me that there are many things for one to see and enjoy close to home – but most of us don’t take the time for them – take them for granted … on the other side, there is something about traveling elsewhere – especially to a foreign land that sparks the soul.

My youth was land-locked and so the prospect of travel in the Navy was particularly alluring. Join the Navy and see the world! I was not disappointed, the adage was true and the times, post WW II, were right. Spain, Italy, Japan, Thailand. Even Hawaii was exotic to my inexperience. Yet I am reminded of the recluse Emily Dickenson who wrote,
I wonder, would her poetry have been any more or less profound had she observed such a time-lapse view of far-away lands? The boundaries of the human mind are virtually limitless.

Thanks for sharing your personal experience … and I imagine many only see the world through the military. Then again, that can also inspire one to want to see more.
Great quotes from Dickenson. If she were alive today, I’ve got the feeling she would travel the world with YouTube.

While it is true that for many military people the foreign scene is mostly the bar scene, many take advantage of time off as tourists. While in the Navy I have, for examples, skied in the Italian Alps, climbed Victoria peak in Hong Kong, seen the Coliseum, St. Peters and the Sistine Chapel, explored Rome, sailed in the Caribbean off St. Croix, and swum in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. ; )

Tough loss yesterday. Still stinging from last week, I didn’t see one play on Saturday … and only say part of the second game yesterday because it was on at the dance studio … otherwise, I wouldn’t have seen any of it. Congrats to your guys getting farther than mine.

Was a good game. I think all in all the Steelers had nothing to be ashamed about. It was too bad about the fumble. I think the Patriots would have taken them net week had they moved on so in the end the better team won.

The question I had after reading your entry today was: “What is the single most spectacular view on the video?” For me, it’s the view of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, resulting in yet another AFA induced Top 25 Bucket List decision.

I just re-watched the video with your question in mind, and for me at this moment of time, it would be the Aurora Borealis. Thanks for sharing your thoughts … but is your list of Top 25 destinations yet to visit on the refrigerator, in the golf bag, or in the file cabinet?
