Colors: The Musical – Act 1: Black

The Story
Color is a large, broad topic, yet color is a human perspective.

We see because cones on the eye’s retina detects a specified range of colors in light, transforms the light messages into nerve impulses to be sent to the brain for interpretation and translation into sight. If it wasn’t for the cones on the retina we wouldn’t see the range of colors that we do … but we could still see without cones.

Colors are a range in the visible light spectrum that correspond to some guy named Roy G Biv. We categorize colors into different levels as primary, secondary, and intermediate. involve tints, shades, and hues with neutrals, pastels, warm/cool, and complementary/contrast … yet designers and artists organize usable colors into a palate.

While a color space organizes colors, a color model serves as a mathematical interpretation … yet 216 colors have been identified as safe for web pages – each with an identify code – each with its own mixture of RGB (red, green, blue), HSL (hue, saturation, lightness and HSB (hue, saturation, brightness).

Cultures adapt color for various symbolisms. The same color can mean excitement, purity, danger, success, and more … yet colors are associated with personality, psychology, meditation, philosophy, and marketing.

No matter the perception, scheme, physics, theory, psychology, or culture, this experience is Color:The Musical.

Act 1: Black

Black – the darkest of all colors – yet without color.

Black – a conundrum – the complete absorption of light – yet the color we see in the absence of light.

Black, the color associated with clergy, judges, government, poets, business, and fashion elegance – yet the color linked to mourning, evil, secrets, magic, and violence.

Black the color of the night and mystery – yet the color of clarity with the printed word.

Black is a term with wide application – Black Friday, black tie, black mark, black market, blacklist, black mark, black ball, black sheep, and in the black.

Black – a color on the flag representing Belgium, Egypt, Estonia, Germany, and South Africa

Guidelines
Songs with Black must be in the title

Cautions

  • No songs using black as a compound word (blackbird, blackout, blackberry etc)
  • No songs using a form of black (blacks, blackie, blackness, etc) .. .just “black”
  • No duplicate songs regardless of artists

Production Note
To prevent browsers crashing from loading too many videos, please 1) include the song title and artist in your text, and 2) paste the URL as part of your last line (not a new line). The latter will provide a link, thus not embed the actual video … but I don’t mind unembedding, so apologies are not necessary.

Announcement
Welcome to Opening Night of the latest musical by aFa Productions: Colors: The Musical.

Selecting the opening song for the opening act of a new musical is never easy – especially when one of my favorite songs would qualify. But, I decided to go outside the box with the one from Arkansas whose first band was the Landsberg Barbarians. The one who is a member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame. The one who wore black as in Man in Black – Johnny Cash!

  1. Here’s Louis Armstrong playing trumpet and singing “(What Did I Do To Be So) Black and Blue?” a 1929 jazz standard composed by Fats Waller with lyrics by Harry Brooks and Andy Razaf. It was introduced in the Broadway musical “Hot Chocolates” (1929) by Edith Wilson. The show also included Waller’s hit compositions “Ain”t Misbehavin” and “Honeysuckle Rose” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vDm1lomVHU

    • Mmmm …. Mmmm …. Mmmm – Love me some Louie ‘Satchmo’ Armstrong playing.
My hubby plays trumpet and he’s his favorite. He met him once in his home in Queens, New York. Nicest man …. humble to the end. I love all the songs you mentioned. We saw Ain’t Misbehavin’ in Manhattan. Well, enough, I could go on. Super selection …

    • Tim,
Glad you see you’ve returned to your jazz roots, thus expanding the genre right from the start. Hearing Armstrong’s voice reminds me of seeing him on television during my youth. Well done!

Great that you could attend Opening Night! For your planning purposes, next one will probably be in two weeks, so watch the Hear Ye page. Cheers to hubby being part of the background vocals for sparking your thought … and a wonderful song!

    • CC,
Welcome to Opening Night! These acts usually provide a wide range of music, including many classics. Google is wonderful for finding songs. Meanwhile, “Blue” will be a future act, … but I’m not sure what the next one will be. Keep your eye of the Hear Ye page … or stay tuned for Opinions in the Shorts (not this week, but the week after) for the announcement. Meanwhile, here’s a song for you …. one from The King … Black Star (Elvis Presley) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0Jkv1cs6PE … enjoy.

  3. Enjoyed reading your information about the color black. I like the color and have no shortage of black clothing. Not that I’m goth or anything, but, you know, it goes with everything.

I’m sure somebody already mentioned the Rolling Stones song. Paint it Black, but that’s the first one that comes to my mind. Great song.

Hooray …. a touch of Paris is good for all. Great choice for a song … and I’m glad that Paint it Black also came into your head (plus you stay away as your submission) … Check the Hear Ye page for act 2.

  4. I hate being late! Not as many people see my outfit, but I got on a shoot for a few days. A girl’s got to work! Amazing how many of the songs I thought of are taken! Nonetheless, Michael Jackson has a goody: Black or White https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2AitTPI5U0 Also, if it’s okay with the producer, I’d like to offer an extra song (Marina did) as It is perfectly showy for an opening night; Queen – The March of the Black Queen by Queen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBbkUOPDNRI

  5. I must check my emails more regularly, I nearly missed the opening act, and all of the songs I thought of first were taken. Luckily I am a teenager of the ’70’s, when I had all the time in the world to listen to music, and yet another song came to mind, “Black and White” from Three Dog Night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e4kDXsM6lk This will be one fantastic playing list when compiled, Frank.

    • Joanne,
Being from the same era, I’ve was hoping for this song, so many thanks for coming through. In terms of future acts, (in general) I hope to do them every two weeks at the same time and day of the week (I guess it’s sometime your Wednesday morning). I announce them on the Friday before … BUT … I post the next act’s theme and date on the Hear Ye page/tab before announcing it in a post. For instance, Act 2 info is already there.

  6. With the excellent choice of Johnny Cash starting us out, I immediately thought of Bob Dylan. Dylan thinks the world of Johnny, as we see here:

“Blessed with a profound imagination, he used the gift to express all the various lost causes of the human soul. This is a miraculous and humbling thing. Listen to him, and he always brings you to your senses.”

And so I thought of Dylan’s “Man in the Long Black Coat.”

“Crickets are chirpin’, the water is high
There’s a soft cotton dress on the line hangin’ dry
    Window wide open, African trees
Bent over backwards from a hurricane breeze
Not a word of goodbye, not even a note
    She gone with the man
In the long black coat” …. https://youtu.be/tAPv7xWQzgs

and “Black Satin Dancer” by Jethro Tull https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBFXAN0pTjo [needless to say how much I love these guys! 😉 ]
    More tba…
    Happy Friday, Frank!
ps I hope The Producer and you, my kind friend, don’t have a problem with the additions. Please advise when would be a good time to add more! So many great songs are still missing… 😉

  9. I’m late to the party but still happy to contribute. I grew up to the sounds of big band music playing on my Dad’s “hi-fi” player and he was a particular fan of Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Here’s a classic live recording of “Black” from Ellington’s larger work “Black, Brown, and Beige”. I picked this version because the Duke speaks about it before the music starts. http://youtu.be/D26LhK2AXbc
