Last week we traveled to Norway to look out and around – so this week we look up.
There are worlds beyond our own—the compass will show the way. (From “The Golden Compass”, movie 2007)
No sky Leila had seen before could compare to the beauty she was seeing above her. It didn’t feel like some accident of nature but rather something that was purposefully unleashed on the world. (Adi Alsaid, “Let’s Get Lost”)
The north! the north! from out the north
What founts of light are breaking forth,
And streaming up these evening skies,
A glorious wonder to our eyes!
(Hannah Flagg Gould, “The Aurora Borealis”)For night’s swift dragons cut the clouds full fast,
And yonder shines Aurora’s harbinger;
At whose approach ghosts, wandering here and there,
Troop home to churchyards.
(William Shakespeare, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”)When I look at the northern lights … I see our ancestors dancing around a sacred fire, lighting the way for us when it’s time for us to cross over from this physical world and join them. (Molly Larkin, “What do the Northern Lights mean for us?”)
You cannot rob me of free nature’s grace,
You cannot shut the windows of the sky
Through which Aurora shows her brightening face.
(James Thomson, “Castle of Indolence”)
That was wonderful to watch Frank – doesn’t the perspective make the clouds seem so very low! An amazing feeling of the power and the wonder!!

Ah… the Northern Lights! Fascinating!
We get to see them in the UK from time to time, Frank… well, I say ‘we’, but I’m always looking the other way! I’d love to see them in person!

Tom,
If I recall, you are toward the north, so maybe your wish will come true.

It must be amazing to see the northern lights. The light looks like it’s dancing across the sky.

Resa,
Seeing the northern lights would be spectacular … now that is something you could see without a plane ride.

Yes, and I saw many as I grew up in the prairies! It was taken for granted, which I now regret. I never stopped to smell the roses lights.

Fabulous video! I feel like if I was there I wouldn’t be able to do anything else but stand and stare at the sky the whole time.

Vanessa,
Having not seen the Northern Lights myself, I’m not sure how much dancing one would see in real time … so hooray to the time-lapse cameras capturing the event and turning it into an awe moment.

Welcome first-time commenter. Isn’t nature such a grand museum of fascination! … and toss in the art photographers using technology to capture these moments. Have you seen the Aurora?

I’ve seen the Aurora, but I’m a bit too far north for the more spectacular displays. What you have here is way more cool than we generally get up here. Thanks for sharing it.
