Opinions in the Shorts: Vol. 310

Other than knowing it happened, I don’t know much about the recent incident in Nice, France. What is going on in today’s world? When will the good rise up?

Count me in as a person looking forward to seeing the new version of this movie hit from the past.

My wife and I are actively working on a wall project that I plan to feature in a post sometime in August.

Given the recent cases of violence by police and the Dallas shooting against police, the strongest correlation between the two is obvious – both are President Obama’s fault.

Rev, Martin Luther King, Jr. offers a wide selection of great quotes that are applicable for current times. This one stuck me this week:

We have got to learn to disagree with being violently disagreeable.

This golf season has been one of my strangest seasons yet. Oh well … but I’m still having fun playing. I haven’t played as much as I hoped at the course where I’m working, well … work hours get in the way.

I didn’t know that Presidents Ford and Carter developed a strong friendship during the 1980s – and through that friendship, they agreed to the survivor would speak at the other’s funeral … which Carter did for Ford.

Politics is a team sport, but governing is about finding solutions – not demanding a particular solution. No wonder government has a difficult time accomplishing anything meaningful.

Numerous polls are supporting the thoughts I’ve had for some time about this election – more people will be casting votes against a candidate rather than for a candidate … and yes, that’s also President Obama’s fault. Nonetheless, I wonder if the strong negatives leads to a one-term presidency.

Count me among those critical of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg criticizing presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump (R-NY). Then again, Mr. Trump’s response was predictably pathetic.

Here’s a great line from a local Letter to the Editor – If Donald Trump becomes the next president of the United States, I will be the first in line to buy a ticket for Ken Ham’s Noah’s Ark replica …. Because I am pretty sure that Yahweh will suddenly change his mind about never flooding the world again.

Regarding positions on issues, this recent Doonesbury strip hit the nail on the head (well, for me) … which helps demonstrate that this election isn’t about issues.

  2. I’m beside myself with all this bad news lately, Frank. I feel such a mix of emotions. Everyday it’s another horrible event. I just want it to stop. I want to get off. Thanks for playing the Summertime song. Man, those chops! That made me smile. 🙂

  4. I think people are feeling the strain of the constant bad news.
    The last couple of years we’ve gone to a Bastille Day event at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. We weren’t planning on going this year because it’s going to be extremely hot, but I wonder now if they will feel the need to tone it down. I hope not. I don’t want terrorists and evil-minded people to make us all afraid all the time.

    The MLK quote is a good one.

    I admired the President’s thoughtful responses last night at the town hall meeting. (His fault.) Also, the Milwaukee police chief. Both such a contrast to the man with the hair.

    Enjoy your weekend, Frank. I’m eager to hear about “the wall project.”

  6. The Nice, France attack is heartbreaking. People just out there to celebrate their country’s special day, and to have it end that way is tragic. We definitely need the good to rise up, and like you, I know it’s out there. It just doesn’t spread as quickly on social media.

  8. Frank, I determined that my colleague, Godsend, and I were just returning home from The Grind when the massacre in Nice was happening. Godsend, who has been stuck working alongside me for over six years, is “only” 29 years younger than me. She is struggling to get a handle on this. She often asks me questions like I have the answers. She has asked me repeatedly today why these attacks keep happening? On Wednesday, he day before Nice, she asked me, “Why do I sneeze so much?” I explained, “Some people are writers, some people are painters, you’re a sneezer.” I miss the innocence of Wednesday.

      And some sneezers sneeze in groups of two or three while others are single sneezers. In terms of what to tell Godsend, do what you can. Then again, there’s always the approach of, “Humanity has always been selfish and it refuses to learn from history.”

      • The more I read about this trucker, Frank, the more I think he was an angry, wife beating, bad apple who might have been influenced by ISIS, but had nothing to do with them. Also, his father said he wasn’t even religious. It sounds like he was just a real nasty bastard, something I’ll probably say to Godsend on Monday. Then, she’ll likely sneeze.

  9. We’ve lost our way as a society for many reasons ~ I’m sick and tired of the violence happening all around the world. The good must rise up, it’s time for this nonsense to stop.

        • It’s easy …. (Short Directions) … do your search … place the cursor on the image (which causes a black box with title, photographer, and icons to appear) …. the key is the icon in a circle that looks like …. this icon means you can use the image.

          Click the icon I described … an Embed This Image dialog box appears …. there is a smaller box with a code starting with something like <div class= …. copy the entire code, then paste it into the location in the post where you want it to appear.

          Note:
          1) give the code its own line
          2) the image will be left justified (and you can't change that).
          3) after you save the post with the image's code, WordPress shortens the code.

          Hopefully that's enough to get you started.

  11. The first video that you posted won’t play in the country I live in, it says: not available in your country.

    Indeed, way too much violence… as usual, seems it’s become the new normal, or has it always been? I haven’t read of a time that wasn’t riddled with violence.

      Bummer on the copyright issue … it’s the music video to the original Ghostbusters movie.

      Violent times indeed …. but I also agree with you that it’s always been so. One of the major differences today is that technology allows us to get the new faster. In other words, humanity has always fallen short – but we notice it more.
