Greetings fellow bloggers. I’ve missed your presence both here and on your blogs. Isn’t my personal greeter adorable?
Some have noticed that me snooping around with some visits, and (of course) my posted dedicated to #9 honoring the 9th anniversary of my little corner of the world.
The family is making progress with helping an elderly aunt. The task at hand seems monumental, but that’s not unexpected. We know there are several months of work ahead, so we don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel – but that will come. Hopefully the light won’t be another train.
There’s never a good time when it comes to dealing with elderly relatives. Good news is that we see progress on important milestones, plus our aunt is generally receptive to what we suggest. Unfortunately for us, our tasks were put on hold for a bit because of a long-planned vacation during August.
The Vacation
- A 5-hour drive to Chicago to eliminate a flight leg (each way) and for considerable financial savings
- Flew Chicago to Reykjavik to London Heathrow
- Spent 4 days in London (our first trip to the UK)
- Bused to Southampton to make the Caribbean Princess our home for 12 days cruising the British Isles (including a stop in France)
- Bused from Southampton to Heathrow for our flight to Reykjavik – instead of transferring to another flight, we stayed for 3 days
- Flew to Chicago, then made it to Cincinnati a few hours before the eclipse (about 90% coverage)
Our vacation was a good one, and I look forward to sharing various aspects about the trip with you. My apologies to my UK readers because I came to your wonderful region without stopping by to say hello. Our time in the ports are short, and we try to see as much as possible … and we stayed busy in London (which is easy to do).
Even though my plate remains full, I will return to posting on an irregular schedule. After all, I do have posts in the queue ready to go.
Hope all is well with everyone! … and here’s a fitting song for you.
Looking forward to hearing more about your vacation . Welcome back. 🙂

Hey, hey TInk!
It was a wonderful trip … after all, we were gone 21 days to all new places for us!

Nice to see you back Frank. When life gets busy blogging takes a back seat. Holidays also interrupt blogging and life in general. I bet you had a great trip! Look forward to catching up.

Brenda,
It was our first trip to the British Isles … and wow … why did it take me so long! Where were your favorite places?

I loved the Downs in Cheltenham, Sally Lunn’s in Bath, and London. All of Scotland. I want to visit Wales. Perhaps I’ll get there one day.

It was a great trip … and that’s where we saw the heat wave in your region. Better now?

Oh, yes, we had 3-4 of those this summer but they’re gone. September is always the best month here.

Looking forward to hearing all about it, Frank. London made me fall in love with travel. Such a wonderful city; filled with right angles. 😏

Elyse,
London was remarkable … simply so much … but I was expecting you to comment on Edinburgh. 😉

London was my first trip abroad. I fell in love with travel there. Edinburgh I live for different reasons — and from this post I didn’t know you’d gone there! I could have offered you pub references!

If London was your first major travel, I can understand how it can affect a first time traveler. In terms of Edinburgh, see the cruise map.

Merril,
I think we book this trip last October or November … so the build-up was a long time. Best part of the trip was that every place was different.

I know you enjoy travel … ever been to the UK?

Not yet! High on my list, though!

Very enjoyable region. Every place was so different. I think of cruising as a sampler …. so we sampled a lot.

That’s how I think of it. I want to do a Mediterranean one… one giornata!

That’s a great trip too …. we’ve done two: Italy/Croatia and Spain/Portugal. Both wonderful.

My dad did one that hit Turkey, Croatia, Italy and Spain… one I definitely want to do!

That cruise covered a lot of ground. My dream Med cruise would hit islands like Malta, Crete, Sardinia, & Corsica.

Ooohhh…. That would indeed be a wonderful one…

Would you believe I almost took that cruise with my parents?! I took them on a British Isle cruise so my stepdad could see the land of his ancestors, but I went with a different cruiseline instead. We just got back. Can you imagine if you and I would have run into each other there? 😄

Carrie,
Wow … what a coincidence! Interestingly, about a month before we left we discovered that a HS friend of my wife was boarding the ship after we disembarked … so that was unexpectedly close! We were cruising Aug 5-17. Which line did you pick?

Celebrity. Nice ship. My first time on it.

We saw a Celebrity ship twice …. once in Edinburgh (but anchored in different places) … Can’t recall the other port. … We like Celebrity better than Princess.

Yes it was a great ship. Wonderful shows and yummy food. I’m sure we’ll book with them again. I get tired of how cruise lines nickel and dime you though. Everything costs extra now it seems.

Oh yes …. we paid $8.99 for 15 minutes of Internet time to get our boarding passes for the flights. …. and to think they advertised doing so!

So crazy those wifi fees.

We paid because we wanted to check in … but that’s a good money maker!

I splurged a little too much on the fresh waffle cones and gelato. Which cost extra, of course. But don’t tell anyone…

We’ve been twice in 1999 and a year ago. In both most of our time was in Scotland. I really like Scotland. It is so diverse in land and people. They were friendly and good talkers. Our barge trip through Loch Ness and two others was great fun. Edinburgh was historically a wonder.

Now I remember that trip …. and you even saw Nessie!

Hmmmm . . . I wonder if our friends were on that same cruise–the ports seem very familiar. Were you hoping for a day trip to the Orkney Islands, which got cancelled because of high winds?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Kerry,
Interesting, but Orkney wasn’t on our itinerary. In general, we didn’t encounter high winds, therefore a smooth journey.

We enjoyed all the ports. So how close were we to you?

Aha, on your leg between Guernsey and Cork, almost halfway, you passed the very far South West of the UK: Cornwall, that is where we live.
Although we are in Key Largo at the moment, and loving it 😎

Welcome back, oh my dream vacation is to go to the UK – England, Wales, Scotland, then drop on over to Ireland again. Happy to hear all worked out for you and a lovely time was had.

Catherine,
A great vacation indeed. I wish it would have included Wales! When were you in Ireland?
LikeLiked by 1 person
My sister had to go there for work in 2007, and she asked if I wanted to tag along. My husband said go, well he stayed at home with our three kids. I was in Dublin, then when my sister had a day off we travelled south to KilKenny. I highly recommend Ireland, everyone is exceptionally friendly, and the sights are unbelievably stunning.

That was actually the second time he stayed home and sent me away to have a good time – Barbados was the first trip. I took two of our three to visit my brother, our eldest was in France on a school trip, and hubby stayed home to stain our new staircase to the second floor. I have a wonderful husband.

Awesome …. Cruising is like a sampler tray, so we didn’t get to see much or Ireland, but I hear the entire country is wonderful.

Sounds like a wonderful trip, Frank. I’m glad you were able to enjoy some vacation, in particular because of your involvement with your aunt. I know the weight of responsibility with an elderly family member and it can be challenging, but I trust it also feels rewarding to be of such use. I’m sure your aunt is very grateful! I’ll look forward to more information about your travel. 🙂

Definitely a wonderful trip. Hopefully I can get some posts about it soon! Meanwhile, our aunt’s situation is full of frustration, but something that has to be done. We were there earlier this week, and no matter the progress we make, it still feels monumental.
