On Doors

Door – Old English duru, dor, of Germanic origin; related to Dutch deur ‘door’ and German Tür ‘door,’ Tor ‘gate’; from an Indo-European root shared by Latin foris ‘gate’ and Greek thura ‘door’

Door – the entrance to a room or building

Door – a hinged, sliding, or revolving barrier at the entrance to a building, room, or vehicle, or in the framework of a cupboard

Door – a reference to the distance from one building in a row to another

Door – A structure that opens, closes, swings, slides, shuts, hides, protects, and symbolizes

If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” (Milton Berle, comedian)

The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential… these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.” (Confucius, philosopher)

I truly believe that everything that we do and everyone that we meet is put in our path for a purpose. There are no accidents; we’re all teachers – if we’re willing to pay attention to the lessons we learn, trust our positive instincts and not be afraid to take risks or wait for some miracle to come knocking at our door.” (Marla Gibbs, actor)

Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” (George Washington Carver, scientist)

Don’t spend time beating on a wall, hoping to transform it into a door.” (Coco Chanel, designer)

Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn’t know you left open.” (John Barrymore, actor)

Not knowing when the dawn will come I open every door.” (Emily Dickinson, poet)

Listen; there’s a hell of a good universe next door: let’s go. (e. e. Cummings, poet)

No matter if it’s old or new, elegant or simple, metal or wood, ornate or plain – a door is a door while being a wonderful symbol and metaphor. Any favorite doors above or below?

  1. Very cool post. My favorite of the lower group of five was the one on the upper right corner which should come with a log to force it open. Also liked “Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn’t know you left open.” (John Barrymore, actor)

  2. Very good, Frank. I always enjoy a peek inside the portal of our marvelous English language. While its context-driven nature must be confusing to adult learners, it provides a marvelous gateway to the subtleties and similes of abstract thought. Isn’t it marvelous that its entrance starts with Dick and Jane and culminates with the likes of a George Will?

    • Jim,
Your comment reminded me that I should have included a list of synonyms as portal, gateway, and others. You mentioned George Will, but my vocabulary is about 50% of his. Thanks for sharing your insight!

  3. That is a nice collection of doorsways. My brother is Croatia on the coast. He has visited many old sites and abandoned villages. One of his favorite photo types is of windows and doors framed in stone or very old wood.

When we were in Edinburgh last year, it was fun to find the doorways to the closes off the Royal Mile. I got a few photos of them gathered in a gallery about halfway down this post.

    • Jim,
There is no doubt that Europe is a treasure trove for doors, windows, and arches. Amazing. Thanks for sharing a few doors of Edinburgh … and what a great city it is! Going back to read the post as soon as I finish replying to comments.

  4. I love doors–windows too. All the passageways that fit with the idea of transitions in so many things. Your photos are great–no favorites there. I love the quotes too–Emily Dickinson and e. e. cummings words are my favorites!

  5. If you’re taking pictures of doors, Frank, you might be a photographer (rather than a nonphotographer). I can’t think of one photographer I know who doesn’t take pictures of doors. This is a great series of doors, photographs, and quotes. 🙂 It’s difficult to pick a favorite, but if I must: #5. And #7.

    • Robin,
LOL …. I think I got the idea for this from another nonphotographer blogger who takes a lot of pictures. At least I’m trying. Picking favs is definitely difficult, so thanks for sharing yours.

    • Jo,
Glad you enjoyed my way of displaying door. An FYI: My past includes similar posts on corridors, windows, arches, and yes … doors (which I didn’t realize I had done … no kidding! So, to make it easy, I will include the links the next Opinions in the Shorts (hopefully Friday). Thanks again!

  8. Beautiful doors, and I love the quotes, as well. I scrolled from beginning to end a couple of times thinking one would be more impressive to me above the others, but there was something in each one that appealed to me!
