The Story
Welcome to Pronouns 2: The Musical.
Some may ask, “Pronouns?”, but we at A Frank Angle say, “Why not pronouns!”
Why a sequel to Pronouns? Again, “Why not!”
Program
Act 1: My
Act 2: Mine
Act 3: Our
Act 4: Their
Act 5: Your
Act 6: Self
The greatest self is a peaceful smile, that always sees the world smiling back. (Bryant H. McGill, author)
Choose to focus your time, energy and conversation around people who inspire you, support you and help you to grow you into your happiest, strongest, wisest self. (Karen Salmansohn, author)
There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self. (Aldous Huxley, novelist)
If we lose love and self-respect for each other, this is how we finally die. (Maya Angelou, poet)
Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is the richness of self. (May Sarton, poet)
This above all; to thine own self be true. (William Shakespeare, dramatist)
Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement. (Golda Meir, leader)
Guidelines
- Songs must have one of the acceptable words (listed below) in the title
- Acceptable words will be Self, Itself, Herself, Himself, Myself, Ourselves, Yourselves, and Themselves
- Special dispensation will be given to Its songs – but The Producer cautions because It’s is unacceptable
Cautions
- No duplicates songs regardless of artists
- Foreign language equivalents unacceptable
- Beware of Its versus It’s
Production Note
- To prevent browsers crashing from loading too many videos, please
Include the song title and artist in your text, and - Paste the URL as part of your last line (not a new line). The latter will provide a link, thus not embed the actual video … but I don’t mind unembedding, so apologies are not necessary.
Announcement
Welcome to the final act of Pronouns 2: The Musical feature Self. Before introducing the opening act, we have a special announcement.
Starting in early January 2019 – probably January 5th – aFa Productions will be providing a new music event: the aFa Weekend Concert Series. This will feature songs from one artist. The Happy New Year post will announce the who will open the series. We can say that the first 5 artists have agreed to the scheduling. However, this does not mean the end of musicals. Actually, we’ve selected the next theme, and see opening in late April or early May.
We had many great songs and artists in our final list to determining the closing act’s opener. Good news that we know the list of available for this act is lengthy. The Act 6 opener will take us back to the early MTV days. Actually, 1984. It’s the title song of a platinum-selling album. Ladies and gentlemen, loud cheers for Laura Branigan with Self Control.
So glad I was able to find half an hour to hunt for something to add to this week’s show. I found the Eurythmics version (with Aretha Franklin) of
‘Sister’s are doing it for themselves’ https://youtu.be/drGx7JkFSp4 Have a great show – I’m off to get my daughter’s birthday party underway. Happy Christmas all!

Pauline,
Oh my my my my lucky stars! Now that gets me going on my Saturday morning. That is so good, I wish I would have used it as the opener! Annie and Aretha, now that’s quite the combination. My birthday to your daughter .. .and Happy Christmas to my favorite Kiwi! FYI: I will have a Christmas post (up Christmas Eve).

Gary,
After hearing the previous song, I didn’t think anything could get my attention, but this one did! Awesome! In a comment, Merril mentioned the Kirsten Chenoweth version, so I place it in a response to her. Interesting to compare.

I never knew there were so many songs with “self” in them–but I don’t know most of them. 🙂 Sticking with musicals, here’s “Expressing Yourself” from the musical (not movie) Billy Elliott. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKm-pKfYQwg (FYI: The song starts at 2:30)

Merril,
Right out of the gate – three songs, three different genres. Wow. I’ve never heard of this musical, but those kids were a hoot! Seems like the closing number.

You’ve never seen the movie, Billy Elliott? (I think the play came after the movie.) The movie isn’t really a musical, but there is dancing because Billy Elliott wants to be a ballet dancer. This number is in the middle of the show, I think.

Frank, Ya gotta see the movie. It’s wonderful!

I would have loved to see the play (I’m sure it was a whole different thing from the movie…) Great choice, Merril.

The play was on TV once, and we recorded it and watched it. It is different, but they’re both good.

It’s amusing to see how many people misspell its. I went looking for a good version of Willy DeVille doing “Every Dog Has Its Day” and only one had it spelled correctly. I decided on the performance at the Olympia theater in Paris with a guest appearance of the writer of the song, Eddie Bo, and a misspelled its: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdFxtvWYnwY&t=36. Amusing side note: Eddie Bo used the pronoun “his” in the 1960 original (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWW79qzZP7M).

Yahooey,
Good research – and The Producer confirms – I could tell he liked the song because I saw a slight head-bob. I didn’t know Willy DeVille – so thanks for the intro – Great song! … and cheers to you for jumping into the abyss of ITS.

I am glad that both The Producer and yourself enjoyed the song. Willy is an old favourite of mine. I have been following him since he was known as Mink.
This is the first time I have had songs queued up ahead of time. When you announced the change, I understood the difficulty because the title almost needs to also have the noun it’s pro’ing and then I checked what I had in my collection. Surprisingly, I found that I had a few – a large collection helps.

Most definitely enjoyed it!
It’s the second time for me (that I was queued up, that is)! I was all ready to go and then the change – still allowing for the original…

Good morning, Frank. I just couldn’t do it. Was too dang tired yesterday to stay up until 1. Managed until midnight but just barely.
That said, as Yahooey did, I am gonna live on the edge with an “Its” song with none other than the late great Tommy Petty and “Mind With a Heart of It’s Own” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0obFM380J20&feature=player_embedded

Ironically, I wasn’t feeling all that badass WHEN I woke up. But it’s coming on strong now. Must be the Bustello and biscotti. 😉 Which is supreme.
I should have done that! My bad, but I’m not used to this, yet.
And back atcha with the love, sistah! 😘

Well now… it’s hard to feel badass immediately upon waking and sliding outta bed. I start feeling it with the first cup of caffeinated elixir. However, I am very happy you enjoyed the Bustello and biscotti (I know, I know it’s NOT fruitcake). And no, no, ya done good!
Dang it, not on my phone… xo

I felt like I had gotten my ass kicked by a badass, to be honest. It took me a couple cups of good stuff, after which I made the executive decision to double down with a couple more. Which ain’t my regular way of doing business, but hey, sometimes you need a contingency plan.
I LOVE the biscotti! Sooooooo good! You are just so damned uber talented! I know one thing, I’m not gonna have better biscotti than that. I can’t wait to partake of the (not) fruitcake now!
Thank you again for being the hostess for the mostess. Yo. Da. Best.

I’m on said cup. And loving it. The biscotti didn’t hurt, of course. I’m so flipping wired that I’m actually watching Zombie House Flipping on A&E whilst listening to Rick Boss on YouTube.
I wonder how the not fruitcake would be with a beer?
LikeLiked by 1 person
I’m a third the way down, eating the “scraps” of the fruitcakes I made yesterday for breakfast – ya see, I cut off the tops so’s I can add the extras – though the recipe says to turn it upside down and decorate the bottom. I’d get nothing if I did that!
Zombie House Flipping? Rick Ross (Boss)? Lawsy…
As for with beer… you just let me know how that goes together, k?

Holy Moses that sounds divine!
It IS a work of art, yanno . . with that marzipan frosting. Wowza.
I had never watched the show before, but it’s not bad. All staged, which . . what a shock! A reality show? Staged? But still entertaining. Vegas House Flipping is good too, even if the couple annoys the fuck outta me.
Imma go beer and not fruitcake for shiz. I am on a mission.

And then it’s like I’m not really eating because, not a real piece, yanno?
I’m glad you think so.

Whoa…some impressive tunes here. And kudos to those who found “its” songs. After what seemed like 87 hours, I abandoned that search in favor of “self.” Originally I was leaning toward Pink’s “Conversations with My 13-yr. Old Self” because…well…it’s Pink! Then I came across a couple of other artists who rang my chimes. Chris Isaak’s “Don’t Get So Down On Your Self” https://youtu.be/ImtrJj-JrHQ and a local band formed in Colorado Springs who went big-time with their “Counting Stars” hit: One Republic, “If I Lose My Self” https://youtu.be/TGx0rApSk6w. As we say around the Ranch at this time of year…Fleas Navidog! 🎄Cheers!

Monika,
The Producer scoffed when he saw your 2 submissions. Keep in mind, he has a perennial burr in his shorts, then adds more during the holiday season. Some return on Day 2 for more submissions – and that’s a day when Dale and I generally have some fun. Meanwhile, I enjoyed both of the songs. Horray for Isaccs connection to the wonderful city of C-Springs.

Sorry, I had hoped in the spirit of the holiday, the rules and thus the Producer might be somewhat flexible. That said #notsorry Bwahaha! Seriously I understand. Actually it’s One Republic that has the Colorado Springs connection. The handsome crooner Isaak is from Cali and has no Colorado connection of which I am aware. 😉

Sorry I got the performers locations switched. Regarding The Producer, he has no holiday spirit. He even think Scrooge was a light weight even before he encountered the ghosts.
