Because we couldn’t rehearse while in Alabama, last Sunday we had a chance to listen to our handbell choir play a wonderful song for Lent. (Plus, the group played very well.) To listen to In the Wilderness (Jason Krug), click here, and then find the Listen button (after the opening paragraph that is worth reading), then click Listen. Warning: It’s over 6 minutes, but it can serve as background music for those interested.

The Weekend Concert Series returns this Saturday with Carole King taking the stage at 1:00 am (Eastern US).

Regarding the concerts, tradition is that I limit comments to one song per person. However, a little known fact is that commenters can return on Day 2 (Sunday) to add more songs.

Did anyone watch the Aretha Franklin tribute show on CBS last Sunday night? We did – and enjoyed it.

Have you ever taken a DNA test as Ancestry DNA or 23andMe?

Last week we sprung forward into Daylight Savings Time (DST). Two US states (Arizona and Hawaii) do not join the fun. Several other states are considering doing the same while several others are considering making DST permanent.

Cheers to the US Women’s Soccer Team seeking equal pay with their men’s counterpart. With Wimbledon tennis approaching, should men and women receive the same winnings when men must win three sets per match while women two?

AOC is made it known that moderates are not welcome. Nothing like pushing away potential voters. Just because I’m anti-Trump does not mean voting for the Democratic candidate is automatic. So thank you AOC, the odds of Dems getting my vote in 2020 has fallen to 10%.

Now would this be an interesting Democratic presidential ticket for a bumper sticker: Hickenlooper-Buttigieg

President Trump referred Apple CEO Tim Cook as Tim Apple. To me, a simple slip of the tongue. That’s something we’ve all done. However, President Trump is so arrogant, he can’t even admit a responsibility on something like this. Instead, he favored an explanation that is pathetic and senseless: “I quickly referred to Tim + Apple as Tim/Apple as an easy way to save time & words.”

Presidential Weekly Summary: Build the wall. No collusion. Witch hunt. Lock her up. Fake news. I feel badly for Paul Manafort. Obama’s fault.

To lead you into the weekly dose of satire, here’s something different. Viareggio is a popular respite by the sea on Tuscany’s west coast. Actually close to my family. Carnevale di Viareggio is a popular annual event. Let’s just say this event displays a bit of satire. For those who dare, watch a four-minute video here.

  1. Thanks for this update. I did watch the Aretha special–and loved it. Your concert was appreciated as well, as is the upcoming one for Carole King. I am so weary of all the campaign shenanigans already and the election is so very far away. ARRGH. Your posts lift my spirits.

    • Patti,
Hooray … the first commenter watched the Aretha special! Meanwhile, I’m sure the 2020 campaign will give us many opportunities to bang our heads against the wall. YIKES! … yet, thanks for the kind words and support.

  2. Aretha was a lot of fun… looking forward to Carole King.

Watched a bit of the Carnevale di Viareggio… clicked ahead and landed on the Trump float. Buahaha!

Fun? What the heck is so fun with Daylight Savings Time? It puts most everyone in a foul mood. Wish they would just drop the dang thing…

See ya tomorrow night! Well… maybe not. You’re rarely up for the start… 😉

    • Dale,
Yea … someone watched Carnevale Italian style. Satire is definitely on full display there! Trump made multiple appearances there – and seemingly fitting portrayals. Overall I like DST, but I don’t care for the adjustment to getting it started.

Well know, maybe I’ll be up for the start. ha ha ha … then again, stranger things have happened. But hey – this is the week my wife is on the girl’s cruise – dance, dance, dance for me.

BTW – if you get the chance, go back one post.

  3. I also enjoyed the Aretha tribute. It was timely with your recent Weekend Concert. And I somehow missed the AOC comments. Good grief! I can only imagine how nuts the lead to 2020 is going to be. I’m beginning to think I may not have what it takes to watch.

I have a DNA kit and just haven’t followed through yet. I don’t expect any surprises! 🙂

Carole King gives us a large songbook. I will have to wait for your rules. Songs she wrote? Songs she performed? I’ll be ready!

    • Debra,
I knew you wouldn’t miss the Aretha schedule! Regarding your DNA kit, I want to know how much Neanderthal you are – now certainly that will be a surprise!!!!

Carole King concert? …. oh yes …. she must be singing the song.

  4. Hey…already know exactly which song I am choosing!

Also I really want to do this DNA ancestry thing. I have a feeling I may be like, millionth cousins with Cleopatra. Just a hunch
    Lol

  5. The read “My personal journey through polarized America” makes me want to read Darrell M. West’s forthcoming Brookings Institution Press memoir “Divided Politics, Divided Nation: Hyperconflict in the Trump Era.”

Jason Krug’s handbell choir piece “Into The Wilderness” ranks in my Top 5 in that genre for dramatic impact and spookiness. I especially liked how the organ part fit into the harmonic scheme.

One splat – “Woman nervous for boyfriend to meet person she becomes around parents.”

    • Tim,
I always welcome the news of a splat. Glad you enjoyed the handbell piece. A fabulous piece for the season. However, no organ — the piece was a combination of bells and chimes – so I imagine what you thought was organ was actually lower bells. So that’s a good thing about this piece!

  6. Why in the blessed hell are we still doing DST???

I watched a great doc about Borg and McEnroe recently. Those two played one of the best matches in tennis history and were fierce rivals. They have become close friends in the years since. It’s a great watch.

Come on baseball, please get here so I don’t have to listen to people gush about March Madness . . .

    • Marc,
Opening Day in Cincinnati is approaching … a day like no other anyway. Depending on the weather, we may go downtown this year for the festivities. Meanwhile … I enjoy March Madness. Expectations are low this year, but hey – the Cincinnati area may have 3 teams in the dance … that’s 3 teams that the farthest two are about 11 miles apart. Not bad for a small city. Meanwhile …. I like DST – just not that initial adjustment.

      • The Reds have caught some people’s attention nationally with their moves over the winter. They just might be fun to watch.

I haven’t watched a minute of college basketball this year and won’t watch the madness. The sport wears its corrupt nature like a badge of honor, sad to say.

I just don’t understand DST. I’m fine when we fall back. I think we should keep falling back until we gain a calendar year.

  7. Loved the hand bell music. Very descriptive and mysterious. The sheet music looks like a whole other language to me. The Rio Carnival floats are amazing, but I think I’d rather look at the photos than actually be there; too many people for my liking. The whole Tim Apple episode really made Trump look like the narcissistic dotard that he is. 😯 Carole King was one of my favourite female artists way back in the day. I’ll try to get in early with my choice. Happy weekend, Frank. See you at the concert. 🙂

    • Sylvia,
Thanks for listening to the handbell piece. It is wonderful. Yes – handbell music is different – well, notes are notes, but also has unique markings. For instance, chimes notes are the triangular, bells the circles … plus there are various marks for techniques. Nonetheless, notes are notes.

That Carnival was in Italy. Quite the annual event of satire. Right on about Tim Apple.

See you at the concert. Reminder CRTL F (Command F) to search for the keyword in the song title.

  8. Well bummer, sorry I missed the Aretha special. No doubt I’d have loved it. What a beautiful piece with the handbells. Who knew there was such musical nuance with them?

Dealing with different time zones is hard enough, now factor in when DST goes into effect at different times and it’s a recipe for major aggravation. Put me down as a vote to eliminate it all together-worldwide. 😈

  9. I didn’t watch the Aretha special, but I just checked and it’s online.
I did do a DNA test. I was hoping for something really surprising, but it was boring. I forget the exact number, but something like 95% Eastern European Jewish. 🙂
The Italian carnivale is wild–more than one Trump float!

  10. Those motorized floats at Carnevale di Viareggio were the best. I guess Trump is a popular guest at these kinds of things. Don’t worry about the who gets your vote, Frank. They will turn into an incompetent once elected. It is Obama’s fault That we have no one to count on.

  11. My wife and I both submitted DNA samples to 23 and Me. Mine was rejected and they sent me a re-test. Same result, reason unknown. They say it sometimes happens. Huh? They refunded my purchase price and said they will not test me again. Wife’s results were mostly unsurprising, no serious health concerns, ancestry from northwestern Europe, probably Britain and Ireland. Still, there was some interesting stuff in her report.

  12. The Brookings article on the partisan divide was a very good read. This sentence especially summed it up for me:

Enemies do not negotiate; rather, they fight to an often-bitter end, and the winner imposes its will on the loser.
