Prince OD’d on his flight home from his last ever show. The doctors where his plane made an emergency medical landing tried to keep him there. He insisted on going home. When he got back to Minn., he was not only sick with bronchitis but in massive pain from two damaged hips. Somehow he convinced his doctor to prescribe Fentanyl, which in the hands of a non-medical person can be deadly. It was to him.
As I remember, at least one of his hips was surgically repaired, but it didn’t work. He was a Jehovahs Witness. They allow nothing foreign in the body. No blood and certainly not the plastic and metal that a hip replacement requires.
All of that said, I have a replaced hip and severe osteoarthritis in my lowest four vertebrae. I live with pain on a daily basis. It is not to the level Prince suffered, but everyday is a new adventure in pain, mobility issues and pain management via meds. I understand what Prince did. He was trying to ease his pain. Nothing more. Just like Tom Petty did after him.
Neither of them should have been touring. They should have been in a hospital being repaired.
Neil Young once said, “the thing that makes you are, will kill you in the end.” Prince wore high heels all of his life because he was 5′ 1″. He jumped all over the stage, he did cartwheels. Petty played until he couldn’t because the show must go on. He played his last ever show and died three days later. Me? I carried 40 pounds of cameras on my right side for almost 40 years.
I always say, “walk a mile…”

Thank you, Ray. I knew it was a combo of all that. I knew he was Jehova Witness and would not allow blood transfusions. I didn’t realise he had had one of his hips done. Foe sure wearing those heels were nefarious to his poor hips.
It is so true…in excess, what makes you can definitely kill you (or damage you, as in your case).

I don’t know if it’s excess. We are driven to do what we do. I know much better, but I’m going to photograph a second line tomorrow. I’m always happy when I don’t fall down in the street and break something.

Nils Lofgrin is the other one. He is between 5’1″ and 5’3″. He is probably one of the world’s best guitar players, playing in both Neil Young’s Crazy Horse and Bruce Springsteens E Street Band and still having his own solo career. He used to do complete flips on stage. Today, he has both hips replaced.

Well … I hang my head down on this one. I don’t know many Prince songs, and as per my personal code, I left the biggies for others to use … including your choice. I think that song, but for me, I’m bummed that the lady in the mustard gold in the intro didn’t appear in the video much after that.
I have a sentimental link to this song via ballroom world. A couple of points. 1) this couple has appeared on Dancing with the Stars (dancing to Michael Buble singing), 2) she wear that yellow dress very well oddly, also on DWTS), and 3) she is my link to the stars because I have held her in frame, and danced with her some – but she wasn’t wearing the yellow dress … so I had to use it. 4) When they are done around 2 minutes, forward ahead to 5 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYX1pgg2Flc … Enjoy.

He was. I started listening to him in approximately 1981. A girl (that I was interested in) pointed out that under the funk there was some incredible guitar work. As you might imagine, I decided to do some, er, research.
