Located on the Ohio River, Cincinnati was a center for westward expansion – and it embraces its river heritage
Win or lose, Cincinnati embraces it’s baseball team … and we’ve lost a lot in recent years
Fountain Square is the center of city center … and the place where people gather to celebrate and commemorate
Cincinnati love its art deco … these are in the Carew Tower
The city shines during the day …
…. and at night …
… and it has quiet places in the city center
On the Cincinnati’s Merry-Go-Round, (Carol Ann’s Carousel) riders can choose from 44 handmade Cincinnati-centered characters. Do you have any ideas for these characters? To see all the characters, click here for a video.
The Queen City never looked finer, Frank.
And aside from that banner celebrating the Reds sweep of the Yankees in the ’76 Series, this post is just perfect. 😉

Glad you enjoyed this. The Carew Tower is a center city landmark. Yesterday, I saw the movie Dark Waters, and the restaurant and lobby on the second floor were in the movie!

Frank, I love the careful way you describe places, the beauty you give them in your posts. That carousel – every child’s dream!!

Rachel,
Thanks for strolling along for a bit of my city. I’ve had these pics for some time, so I wanted to get them out as part of my cleaning-out-the-closet project.
The carousel is so interesting. Because each piece expresses a part of the city, each was hand crafted.

And the home of the wonderful Kenner toy company! Love the photos, Frank. The carousel is fun, and the art deco is pretty breathtaking.

Vintage,
Cheers to your love and appreciation of Kenner! For me, the Carew Tower is one of two of my favorite art deco sites in the city. (The other is the old Union Terminal which is now a museum). The “horses” on the carousel where handmade so each could represent a part of the city. Thanks for walking along!

Good choices. I love going into the Carew Tower because of the art deco style. I took that night shot from a rooftop bar this past summer.

Your post has me looking forward to a stroll through Carew Tower after seeing the movie Dark Waters. Also, I was struck by the eloquent brevity of your photo titles.

We also just saw Dark Waters. Some thoughts in the next OITS. Meanwhile, Carew Tower is an elegant place.

Liked the visit back to my old stomping grounds. The Union Terminal building is one of my favorite stops when I’m in the area. Do they still do big fireworks displays on the river?

Eilene,
OH yes … the Labor Day fireworks are bigger and better than ever. Huge crowds. Meanwhile, agree, Union Terminal is a wonderful place. We hope to visit next week before the holiday rush.

Theodora,
Thanks for sharing your favs. Carew Tower is one of the two best places for art deco here … but not the only. I too like that style. Search Google Images for “Cincinnati Union Terminal interior” ….. As for the night pic, we were with a group at a rooftop bar when I captured that view.

Love that carousel! Such a diverse and quirky bunch of animals. That praying mantis is quite unusual on the merry-go-round circuit, I venture. Thanks for sharing that cool video.

Glad you enjoyed the merry-go-round. The Cincinnati Zoo has a large insect world, so I imagine that’s a reason why the praying mantis made it. I wonder if a cicada is one it! One of the animals is a bearcat, mascot of the Univ. of Cinci.

Ah yes, the Bearcats of Cinci. My old boss and I rooted for their b-ball team more than once (he went to Wheaton College).

Nope. Airport to P&G headquarters and then back. Didn’t even get a chance to stop in Frankfert KY for some ribs at Walt’s rib shack.

It does. There is a lesson in that situation. One should slow down and look around instead of rushing to the next city. My worst case was one time flying to Zurich, having a meeting at the airport and flying back. Should have at least had a cup of hot chocolate.

Nia,
These types of riverboats were very prominent in the 1800s. Years ago we had a festival here where many in this style came from other cities. Wonderful!

SO many places to see and experience, Frank, and it seems you are one very fortunate person who has been blessed to be able to travel. Loved learning about Cincinnati and was impressed to see that baseball stadium so full. Even if the last World Series was in 1976, the people are still loyal. Here in Buffalo when there is a baseball game going on, our stadium is sadly empty. Beautiful architecture in the buildings and the Art Deco. Awesome!! As for the characters, I’d love to help out but ….. time is a severe dictator. (smile) Thank your this post!! Loved it!! xo

AmyRose,
To me, cities have so much to offer – even the small cities I’m fortunate to have Cincinnati to call home during my adult years. On little correct – the Reds also won the World Series in 1990 – but who’s counting. 😉 Glad you enjoyed the art deco. To see more art deco here, see the link I posted in my reply to Resa. Thanks for strolling along!

Two things in this post are overwhelming reader favorite: the art deco and the carousel – both noted by you. The carousel is a unique work of art … plus I think the riding fee is only $2. The Carew Tower is a local favorite, and is also in the movie Dark Waters!
