In the beginning … a start, launch, dawn … a genesis
In the beginning … a void, an empty space, nothing … or maybe something
In the beginning … exposed soil in a field, an empty stadium, a vacant lot … a place
In the beginning … a concrete footer, steel frame, fountainhead, foundation, … an emerging spring
In the beginning … a whistle, kickoff, scrum, opening tip, first pitch … a waving flag
In the beginning … a crying red face, a nervous child, a smiling bride, a happy graduate … a seed
In the beginning … a ceremony, baptism, bar mitzvah, wedding, commencement, ribbon cutting … an inaugural
In the beginning .. a preface, introduction, forward, prelude, preamble … a start
In the beginning … a new moon, sunrise, nova, … a new tide … a new day
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end. (Seneca, philosopher)
Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again. (Og Mandino, author)
Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love. (Mother Teresa, humanitarian)
Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will. (George Bernard Shaw, playwright)
Glorious!

So many beginnings creating so many wonderful things in life here – it was cool to see them listed like that! That video was really innovative as well. 🙂

Kelly,
I’m not sure what stimulated the idea, but I know many of the thoughts came when I was bored at work. (True) … Over time, I polished. I initially had Beginnings by Chicago as the video in mind, then switched to Symphony of Science … then found this version, whose images are a better fit.

I think it was a perfect fit. And I absolutely love that song by Chicago! Hope you have a wonderful day – speaking of work, heading out now 🙂

“Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight.”—Wow, that is a powerful statement. Imagine how much less drama we’d have with each other if we all did that. Thanks for sharing those inspiring words.

A lovely exploration of the word “beginning” and the temporal abstraction it names for us. I’m with Seneca. 🙂

Cynthia,
“Temporal abstraction” is a great description of this post … exactly my intent. Oh yes – Seneca’s quote is a good one. Cheers to the beginning of a new day.

I do start each day with an awareness that it is full of possibilities and I sometimes think of each beginning as the chance to tap into a “do-over” if life hasn’t been too smooth. I think the Og Mandino quote is absolutely fabulous!

Great post. I would have been with you on Chicago but your choice was excellent. I think the beginning of a project (no matter what) has a lot of excitement connected to it just because there is a potential for big success.

John,
Beginning of a project is full of excitement … and long before the time when the going gets tough (thus the tough get going).

As I read this, I lost the notion of beginnings or endings. They just merged together as one continuous experience, indiscernible from one another. As in life, I suppose… Nice post!
