Opinions in the Shorts: Vol. 280

To the victims and their families, and to the French people for strength, unity, and peace.

Shame to the American candidates for politicizing the event by playing the blame game while offering suggestions that amount to (at best) meager gibberish.

It was good seeing Americans displaying the French flag this weekend … especially when the Army football team came onto the field with for a game at West Point.

Sky: The Musical’s Act 2 featuring the sun is in the books … and we were nearing 40 songs. With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching us in the US, the production won’t return until December. Act 3 features clouds, so song titles must include Cloud, Clouds, or Cloudy. Curtain time is Tuesday, December 3rd at 9:30 pm (Eastern US). Acts 4 and 5 information is on the Hear Ye page, along with another important announcement.

There will be an Explore post this weekend.

Although no kids for us, we enjoy our 4 nieces and nephews. Last weekend we attended the wedding (the third to be marriage) – but it was out first to attend. We were a proud aunt and uncle, and wish them the best.

While in Cleveland last weekend, I saw my first white stuff of winter.

Because both of us volunteer at the weekly Downs Syndrome ballroom dance event, earlier this week my tango partner and I danced for the group. Considering we haven’t danced the routine in over 10 days, we did well. Most importantly, we had fun and it was well received.

Even with the recent attacks in France, Lebanon, and over the skies of Egypt, I still say no US troops on the ground against ISIS – unless a coalition of Arab forces decide to take action.

Since the latest terrorist attack in Paris, it’s interesting to compare and contrast the French and US responses to Syrian and Iraqi refugees.

The Atlantic published What ISIS Really Wants this past February. It continue to be on the front page of their website, plus other news agencies promote it. I listed it as an Interesting Read months ago, but I want to promote it again. It’s a long read – but interesting – however, it is a view – and not the only view. For the interested, here’s the link.

The next Republican debate is December 15th (Tuesday) on CNN. Yawn .. .but another one for me to miss as I go for 7 in a row.

Something to ponder – If political candidates submitted their own questions to answer in a debate, would they truly answer the question?

Last week the Democrats had their second debate, and I missed another one. Damn … that makes me 6 for 6. Here are multiple fact checks from the event: Annenberg FactCheckAssociated Press, PolitiFact, Politico, Washington Post.

I continue to believe that if a governor, senator, or representative wants to run for president, they need to resign their position immediately upon announcing their candidacy. Our states and districts play them to do a job that does not include campaigning around the country while being paid.

  1. The candidates are weird ….. I don’t know what else to say about them. Since I am from the US, I try to keep up to date on the things that they say, but it’s hard when it’s so full of bull….. 😉
    Have a great weekend Frank.

  2. Gosh darn Frank – you had fallen off my email list! I just made a post and for some reason thought of you. I did a search and found this! I see I’ve missed a couple of posts. The wordpress elves strike again!! I’m up to date with the dancing and backing the Aussie lass – she is sooooo together!!!

It happens, and the WP gnomes are the reason! No question!!!! Yes, I seen that happen at this end – thus the importance of occasionally checking the notification settings. Bindi is wonderful to watch and how can one not love her personality! … and it appears genuine. Meanwhile, glad you discovered the issue & I hope all is well as summer approaches.

  3. What a great rendition of La Marseillaise!
You are better off dancing than watching boring debates… 😉
I shall wait (as patiently as I can) for next month to play in your musical!
Have a most marvellous week-end, Frank!

  4. There was snow in Cleveland? Couldn’t have lasted long. Up until today we’ve had such nice weather. But that will change this weekend.

Agree with the politicians stepping down when they run for office. They were elected to do a job, and taking 15 months away from it to travel the campaign trail isn’t it.

    • Carrie,
We saw two bouts. The first, a wave of sleet around 3:45, with the warm ground, no problem. Around 6:45, a wave of snow pellets … short … but they were bouncing off me! Although Saturday was cool, they had good enough weather … but a tad cool for the outdoor pics.

I stated my step-down thought to an ardent Republican (in the family) at the wedding. He continually thought I was playing the Rubio-Bush face-off, but I continually repeated the statement applying to all individuals to all parties, plus the hell with the past as it has to start somewhere. I don’t think he ever got my non-partisan point.

  5. I read this morning that apparently quite a number of Americans will be moving to Canada if Obama lets in 10,000 Syrians. I guess they haven’t read that our government plans to let in 25,000? Congratulations on the tango, smiles are the most important here.

  6. Loved this harmonious rendition of the Marseillaise. I bought a Cane Toad wallet when we were in Australia. It’s amazing to read what a pest they’ve become. The George Michael/Elton John track is such a classic. You’ve inspired me to search in my cardboard box full of music books sent over from South Africa, and pull out my Elton piano solos. 🙂 Have a great weekend, and enjoy the dancing.

  7. I agree if a governor, senator, or representative wants to run for president, they need to resign their position immediately upon announcing their candidacy. With this group of candidates writing their own questions will make it easier for them to dance around the subject.

  8. Your Opinions on all the issues today were spot-on! My hope is that the presidential candidates and their supporters will see your post and adjust their policies accordingly.

Speaking of the candidates, I say SHAME to the gutless ones who advocate sending tens of thousands of U.S. ground troops back to the Middle East, and then when asked if they would order those deployments if elected president, they respond with (1) “But I’m NOT the president,” or (2)”I would listen to the military commanders.”

After a long drought of memorable Onions reaching back to well before your blogging break, “Minimalism Overdone” scored a direct face hit with “Experts Warn Number Of Retirees Will Completely Overwhelm Scenic Railway Industry By 2030” a glancing blow.

The barbershop performance of La Marseillaise hit it out of the ballpark! Be assured I will forward your post to my Francophone relatives.

Always good to read supportive comments from someone away from the center. … and I hope you noted the fact checks from the Dems debate. Meanwhile, glad to know one of The Onion headlines served a direct hit.

  9. And I haven’t missed one of the debates! LOL! Can’t exactly tell you why it holds me, but there’s a little bit of fascination. Must be like when you can’t take your eyes off the side of the road when there’s been a bad accident. I enjoyed seeing so many building it with the colors of the French flag. It’s a small symbolic act, but I like it. Last Sunday we had dinner at my cousin’s house which overlooks SFO and the main airport terminal was all lit up and it was a beautiful sight. We are living in interesting times–to quote the old Chinese curse. Your family wedding sounds wonderful, and it’s the young people with their optimism, getting married and moving forward, that encourage me. Happy weekend, Frank.

    • Debra,
I can see your fascination … especially because I understand that you aren’t a blind partisan. I applaud you fortitude. I’m with you as the various symbolic acts using the French flag were interesting. Meanwhile, the wedding was a good one … and should have been a good financial one for the young couple because most of the crowd were older adults!

Thank you for your kind words. They are fun to put together. When life is normal, I actually put it together throughout the week (as opposed to a late-minute gathering of drivel). 😉

  10. Are you certain this was an Onion headline: Historians Politely Remind Nation To Check What’s Happened In Past Before Making Any Big Decisions

I don’t know Frank, I think this is a fairly decent warning given the world we live in and some of the terrible things coming out of peoples mouths and hearts.

The Toad Eaters, that one sort of made me laugh. We did the same in Texas but with Fire Ants, now we have them everywhere and nothing can kill them! Well nothing but Grits.

Greenland, it is beautiful. Frightening and beautiful. I was there twice when I was young and adventurous. Both times in the winter.

I think though, the most interesting this time was Dietrich Bonhoeffer and daily worship. This, which nearly leads back to my first comment doesn’t it? If only we understood our hearts and our history better.

Loved your musical choices this time Frank.

    • Val,
I recall you being in Greenland, so I was hoping you would comment. 🙂 In terms of The Onion, I see good satire in two groups … the absurdly ridiculous and the very believable. Meanwhile, I greatly appreciate not only your feedback on the articles, but the fact that you read them! 🙂

  11. A fun (esp. The Rare Earth vid) & opinionated post! lol
Canada has approx. 900 Syrian refugees arriving daily until the end of the year … or I heard 25,000. They are all from the refugee camps in Jordan, so I understand.
I wish them all the best in their new lives in Canada, and one day when their homeland is restored, if they want to return, I can understand that.
Too, bad about there being only 8 trillion rats left in America. Won’t be long until it can make the same “Rat Free” claim Alberta, Canada has made! http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/10/09/albertas-rat-free_n_5963140.html

  12. Congratulations to the happy couple! I’m glad you got to go. Weddings make me happy (fortunately, since we’ve had three recently in our family). 🙂

I’m so not ready for white stuff, but better snow than ice and sleet.
