On an Infinite Journey

Fractal – any of various extremely irregular curves or shapes for which any suitably chosen part is similar in shape to a given larger or smaller part when magnified or reduced to the same size (Merriam-Webster)

Fractal – a never-ending pattern. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. They are created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop. Driven by recursion, fractals are images of dynamic systems – the pictures of Chaos. (The Fractal Foundation)

All created forms are fractal, as is their purpose, use, and allotted time for existence. (Guy Finley, writer)

The universe is fractal. The closer you look at it, the more interesting it becomes. (John Lloyd, producer)

Fractal geometry is everywhere, even in lines drawn in the sand. It’s the cycle of life… You see fractals in plants, in flowers. Within the human lung are branches within branches. (Ron Eglash, scientist)

Enjoy this visual journey, but some may find the audio as distracting or annoying.

  1. Images could be the poster-children of the 60’s! Mr. Ruebush’s comment above…Spot On.
On another note, aFA….how you and Mrs. RA be? Miss that devil of a storm? None-the-less you are in my thoughts. Keep safe. Coffee today? Later maybe? RRR

    • Raye,
Yep – perfect designs for that era! … the maker of the video must not have known that, otherwise the sound would have been different.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. All the north side of Cincinnati got was a few flurries, but not enough to cover the driveway. Go 50 miles to the south and southeast, then it gets testy. The northern edge any accumulation was about 10 miles away.

  2. Fractals, I submit, reveal the nature of nature. I find it impossible to believe that nature could be otherwise constructed because the foundation of it is mathematical, i.e., the fibonacci series. Similarly, the universe is statistically consistent. Given a large population and absent outside forces, random outcomes are predictable. This has always amazed me.

I have tested it myself by playing solitaire on a computer. Over a few games the outcome appears random but over many the percentage of wins is predictable. How does it know? It doesn’t of course, and reality doesn’t care, that’s just how it is. (I have noted, however, that random-number generators in software are slightly imperfect and this affects outcomes over time. Some of these are better than others.)

  3. I held up well on the Fractal footage, displaying no fuzzy feelings. I liked Bruce’s comment earlier about “the universe being fractal…and that’s a fract!”

  4. You know, despite the aspirations of people at times towards the meaner end of the wonder scale (which is a thing, you know), I think I like this universe. It’s roomy, musical and filled with meaningful mystery. I mean, what else could you ask for? I guess you could always ask for coffee, and then possibly a good bottle of scotch, which will certainly be in hand when I watch this video again. You’re right, music off. I played it to the extended version of Smalltown Boy, by Bronski Beat. Proof that there is a God behind all these fractal intonations – how else can you explain a one-hit wonder THAT good???
