Songs from Broadway
The Producer’s Guidelines
- Only songs from Broadway musicals
- Clearly identify the song title and the Broadway musical so others can see it
- Only one song per musical (Exception: For participants who have submitted their show entry, other songs from a submitted musical may be placed in the comment string for that musical)
- No duplicate songs
- One song per person on Day 1 (except for the extras in the comment string), unlimited on Day 2 – but only new musicals
- To prevent browsers crashing from loading too many videos, please paste the URL as part of your last line (not a new line) – (I do not mind unembedding, so no apologies are necessary)
Note: Return on Day 2 to submit more songs without limits. (My typical signal is posting a song for all attendees.)
“Underground” (Memphis: The Musical)
Next Concert: Duets – (Either 4th or 11th January) It will be the last in this series. Songs must feature two performers who normally don’t work together. (Simon & Garfunkel would get the buzzer, but James Brown with Gloria Estefan fits)
Past Concerts (Category): Beatles, Ex-Beatles, Moody Blues, Queen, Neil Diamond, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Aretha Franklin, Carole King, Elton John, Billy Joel, Crosby Stills Nash & Young (the group), Doobie Brothers, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Journey, Prince, Guess Who, James Brown, Gloria Estefan
Hey Cincy,

“West Side Story” is now in the books. Now that is a fabulous song from a true Broadway classic. Thanks for the Memphis props. I love the music from that musical, and this is its attention-getting opener.

Yeah, me too. If I’ve already told you this, excuse my repetition…On opening night, at the end, no one applauded. Carol Lawrence who was the original Maria on Broadway said, as they all stood on stage, they were horrified. Then, in one lavish motion, the entire audience gave them a standing ovation. They had just never seen nor experienced anything quite like it before. The rest, is history. I love that story.

I remembered where that came from. Great Masters did a wonderful film on Leonard Bernstein that opens with his funeral cortege en route to Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn while his son narrates. They were restoring the Brooklyn Bridge at that time, and the workers, knowing it was him coming across, all doffed their hardhats and hollered, GOOD BYE LENNY. His son sad, my father would have loved that. There’s a great part about the making of West Side Story that you’d eat up. See if your local library has it. It’s a great film.

Good morning, Frank! Well, you know this is a Frank Angle concert for me! Here’s Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin performing a concert version “Move On” from Sunday in the Park with George at the celebration for Stephen Sondheim (everybody bow) for his 80th birthday. You could choose any performance from this concert. Sunday in the Park with George is about the artist Georges Seurat and his famous painting: A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLI4jelnYAI

I think I saw that show when it was touring. At least I saw something that had clips of sever of his musicals.
Of course, my favorite is Sweet Charity, and Rhythm of Life is the best song – nobody on Earth is cooler than Sammie Davis Jr.! https://youtu.be/xKSA049xkiU

Yes, Sweet Charity is a great one too.
I’m off to listen to Sammy’s song. He was quite a tap dancer and actor. I loved him in Porgy & Bess. Another great muscial. Sadly, have to leave some songs for others but I have a ton in my mind. LOL

I have a ton of songs and musicals too! And, like you, West Side Story was near the top of my list, but I like some of the more complex, very Bernstein numbers, like the Jet song or Mambo.

Love that scene when the two groups have the dance off. My hubby was in a street gang during those years. They were tough kids (before we met). I wish there were more musicals with great lyrics.

I think WSS set the bar for subject matter and lyrics – before they were family entertainment and rarely broached tougher topics. With WWS, the door was opened to go beyond. Steven Sondheim wrote the lyrics, and some of his own musicals are pretty edgy as well.

Yes, there were a lot of firsts in WSS. It approached topics that hadn’t been dealt with before. A good lyric makes a great song. A little rythym doesn’t hurt either. ~~~ : )

Patti LuPone sings “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0d01NpclvlEfrom Evita. It is one of the few musicals I have actually seen.
Also, I just posted a new Art Gown… Velvet Tango, which is an Argentine dance.

Holy. cow. I cannot believe the number of Broadway fans out there! It took forever to get to the end. Not being a big fan of musicals I wasn’t sure about whether I could come up with anything but then I went back to the old hippie days and remembered revival of Hair, the Musical. How about Aquarius, Let the Sunshine In and found this medley from the Letterman Show. Happy Sunday. And congrats on your fantasy football team. https://youtu.be/J5Jk30-1kKI
