Regarding the return of the headstone in the post earlier this week. A grandson (in Columbus, OH) had it removed to add an engraving, but then decided to keep the stone. I discovered an obituary of a person in Columbus with that name who died last summer (June 25, 2015). Coincidence?

Last week I failed to mention the passing of Nancy Reagan. The longevity of recent First Ladies is amazing. WOW! Meanwhile, a tip of the cap to Nancy Reagan for demonstrating grace and love for her man.

Cincinnati is one of the regional locations for the final 16 in the college hockey tournament. Depending on the times, I may go. Meanwhile, college basketball’s March Madness is underway – Go ABK – Anybody But Kentucky!

Last weekend (and I think two weeks ahead of the rest of the world), we in the USA did our spring SkylineGreenforward into Daylight Savings Time … and the first week of is a struggle for many of us.

To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, I continued my tradition to Skyline Chili served with green spaghetti.

Act 5 of Colors: The Musical is next on the musical agenda, which will feature the color blue,

  • All song titles must have Blue in the title
  • No forms of the word as blues, bluest, etc
  • No shades of blue (such as cobalt, indigo, aqua, blue-green, etc)
  • No compound words of blue (such as blue-blood, bluebird, bluejay)
  • No duplicate songs

My wife had a wonderful birthday this week.

I will have an Explore post this weekend.

I was about to scold President Obama for delaying his Supreme Court Justice nomination, but he did so this past Wednesday. Although Republican logic for delaying the confirmation is very flawed, it is good for their partisans who are clueless enough to agree with flawed rationale – therefore allowing elected officials to drag the nomination of a qualified, consensus candidate to the highest court of the land into the political sewer of selfishness. After all, to the partisans, the nominator is more important than the nominee – and that is true on both sides of the aisle. Here a past post with my thoughts about the vacancy.

Governor John Kasich (R-OH) wins the important Ohio primary, but even if he won all the remaining delegates, he would go to the convention short of the number needed for the nomination. I’ve heard Kasich supporters here say he should get out of the race, he should stay, and he’s simply positioning himself for the VP slot.

Despite Elyse’s final plea for me to either vote against Donald Trump (R-NY) or vote in the Democratic primary, I accepted an “Issues Only” ballot. Then again, I also told her that voting in the Democratic primary was equivalent to voting for The Bloviator because it wasn’t a vote against him – to which she didn’t agree.

Good bye Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) – and thanks for the poor showing in your home state. Hopefully a lesson learned – Don’t try to be who you aren’t.

Whether she meant it that way or not, Hillary Clinton’s (D-NY) comment regarding the coal industry will work against her.

Republicans explaining the current chaos in their party being President Obama’s fault got me thinking about other problems due to the current president – such as El Nino, Malaysian Air missing for two years, Oscar nominations, McDonald’s excluding McGriddles from their Breakfast Anytime Menu, latest flooding in Mississippi and Louisiana, Charo, the Cleveland Browns waiving Johnny Manziel, cost of airfare to Europe from Cincinnati, and my lactose intolerance.

Regarding the Republican chaos, I offer this possible explanation. Since President Obama took office, Republicans formed coalitions with other groups to oppose the president. However, this short-term coalition was unsustainable in the long run – so now they are paying the price.

A note for the political junkies. Not long after the 2008 election that put President Obama in the White House, I wrote this post about the Republican party. In light of the past 7 years and the current fractures with the GOP, readers may enjoy this look-back through the lens of what we know today.

It’s been too long since I’ve sent you into the weekend with The Piano Guys. This video has beautiful scenery and is a unique rendition of a popular hit. Have a safe weekend and in the words of Garrison Keillor, Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

  2. Good morning, Frank! I’m glad your wife had a good birthday!
I don’t want to make any noise right now, so I’ll watch the video later.
“History sighs, repeats itself” seems too true. Sigh.

  3. I just re-read your post about the SCOTUS vacancy brought about the death of Justice Anthony Scalia. As in the case of his previous Supreme Court nominations, President Obama did not make the mistake of his predecessors by nominating a Justice Alito. Meanwhile SCRATCH my warning to you that the GOP should confirm Obama’s highly qualified center-right nominee Merrick Garland, or face the possibility of President Hillary Clinton nominating Senator Elizabeth Warren in Garland’s place (with the GOP having lost its senate majority in the wake of the political carnage from their nomination of Donald Trump). REASON? Senator Warren will then be the sitting VICE PRESIDENT of the United States!

I also just re-read your 2008 post “Who Really Lost the Election.” It has 18 paragraphs (counting the title). A hard copy just went into my golf bag so we can discuss it hole-by-hole, paragraph-by-paragraph (counting the title), in view of the present political circumstances. In advance of our discussion, I urge you to read today’s article in the Wall Street Journal by Peggy Noonan, “Will the GOP break apart or evolve?”

I look forward to discussing the read “Death of the Stethoscope?” with my physician brothers-in-law.

    No splats today.

    • Tim,
I can make both a case for and against Sen. Warren as the VP … but I don’t think that will happen.

Thanks for the tip of Noonan’s column. I couldn’t get to it … even after signing in … so will try again later … plus my tablet is having a fit.

  5. That green spaghetti looks so weird.

Speaking of weird, it was nice to see Kasich get Ohio, but he seems convinced he’s going to be the Republican candidate, which is mathematically impossible unless it’s contested. Maybe he has a special crystal ball.

  6. I’m with Carrie — the green spaghetti looks weird. But so is the idea of chili on St Patty’s Day!

I forgive your not voting for a candidate, Frank. I still disagree with it, but … Truly if I lived in Ohio, I might have voted for Kasich just because I would have wanted Trump to lose with every last vote possible!

    Loved the video!

    • Elyse,
You got to remember chili in Cincinnati has a different meaning than elsewhere. Which also means we have two chili dishes here … ours and the one that everyone else knows … but hey – they are different from the Texas version.

The Irish played a role in early Cincinnati, but this tradition is only in its fourth year. Meanwhile, corned beef and cabbage seems to be an Irish-American thing.

Meanwhile, thanks for the voting dispensation. Good news is that my governor didn’t need my vote … but still much unknown ahead.

  7. Hi Frank! Our clocks move forward next weekend. I was ahead of time myself earlier, thinking it was this weekend, but luckily I realised just in time.
I don’t really ‘do’ politics, and your country’s politics confuses the heck out of me (although my country’s politics does exactly the same!) I have to say that President Obama’s policy on the griddle beggars belief. It totally counter-balances El Nino…
Hope you have a good Friday evening, Frank!

  8. ABK made me laugh out loud Frank. So did green spaghetti. I was very pleased the President at least offered up a Supreme Court candidate for the good of the country, politics be damned. As far as politics, that pretty much still has me speechless. Maybe once I get adjusted to this ridiculous “Savings” Time I’ll be better adjusted to make a comment or two on all that.

    • Bruce,
Introducing green spaghetti into a Cincinnati dish has only happened the past 4 years … and I haven’t missed one yet … but it’s only one day a year, so I’ve been lucky to be in town each year. To learn more about chili, I left Kim (SilentlyHeardOnce) two links … so scroll up a short distance to be enlightened.

I can see the Republican action regarding the court backfiring on them …. but they will have the vote of their faithful … on the other hand, they don’t think of the others. Glad yo enjoyed my ABK … I hate them with a passion – and more than any other sports team. Even when they lose, I still unhappy because happiness involves the three-pronged test …. 1) they lose, 2) opponents score at least 100, 3) UK doesn’t score.

  9. First, Love Love Love the Piano Guys and this particular video!

The best read this week for me was a visual one, the Ceilings Frank just Wow. The rest, honestly while interesting couldn’t top this. Some were sad (Minaret), some frightening (Hitler v Stalin), others simply interesting reads.

Your analysis of the political landscape is pretty close to my own, though I might be more passionate. I went back to read your previous, you were close.

    • Val,
I know you love The Piano Guys – so a toast to that. Glad you found a gem in the readings.

In terms of the political landscape, I tend to be more analytical than emotional in my writings … but that’s true no matter the topic. Thanks for going back to read the post from 7 years ago … amazing how applicable it is today. Who would have thunk it!

  10. Thanks for two worthy reads here, Frank, the Stalin/Hitler analysis and the stethoscope. The comparison between the two megalomaniacs is pointless to me, however. It only shows that with technology and organization the potential for human evil is limited only by the imagination, and the same would hold for good. But it is important to record the facts. Who knows, maybe someday we will even learn from them.

As for the stethoscope, I hope it is preserved, both as a symbol and just in case the lights go out. Up in my closet I still have my slide rule.

Wow … love this line – “the potential for human evil is limited only by the imagination, and the same would hold for good. Definitely powerful thoughts for one to ponder … but I too still have my slide rule! I’ve always wanted the large version that hung by hooks above the blackboard.
