On Elmer Fudd

Being a headliner isn’t Elmer Fudd’s moniker, but he may be one of cartoon’s top second bananas. Nonetheless we love this Looney Tunes character with a classic laugh and saying Ws instead of Ls and Rs … “Be vewy vewy quiet, I’m hunting wabbits”.

Ten Things about Elmer

  • Created in 1937 as a character named Egghead who had a haircut like Mo Howard
  • Although Bugs Bunny is his major nemesis, Daffy Duck also riled Elmer
  • The classic inept double shotgun carrying big-game hunter
  • Elmer was painted on the side of The Fuddy Duddy, a WW II B-17 (Flying Fortress)
  • Cameo appearance in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) and Space Jam (1996)
  • Nominated for an Oscar for Tex Avery’s A Wild Hare (1940)
  • Middle initial is J
  • Appeared frequently on the animated series Tiny Toon Adventures as a teacher at Acme Looniversity
  • “Got you, you wabbit stew, you.”
  • “You’re no shewiff! You’re that scwewy wabbit!”

  2. Wow, Frank you’ve yet to do a post on Bugs?!?! He even had his 73rd birthday on a Saturday this year — July 27th; the type of factoid you’re “supposed” to tell the Frank Faithful like revealing Elmer’s middle initial is J. Hm, could that be short for John, James or Jerk? Unlike RoSy, I love Bugs. I also thought that he and Elmer had terrific chemistry, especially when Bugs would dress in drag. When/if you do a post on Bugs, do let us know what Carmen Miranda thought of him.
