It’s been an interesting week for me as I’ve been in bachelorhood as my wife is one her annual cruise with her lady friends. The answer is simple when people ask me what I will do – “I will do whatever I want, whenever I want.”

I spent a lot of time our on the ballroom circuit. It’s been a good time dancing with friends … and it is a good chance to work on leading. For those getting the wrong impression, I’ve been in a crowd where at least a third of the people know me … and would be the worst place to do something stupid.

One afternoon I went to downtown Cincinnati searching for murals that I haven’t posted here.

Here’s an entertaining musical interlude. Very creative, but does this guy have too much time on his hands?

A big wow to the recent news about NASA discovering a new set of earth-sized planets with the potential of having liquid water. Here’s the news release from NASA, and the first video is worth the two minutes.

It seems salted black licorice is common in northern Europe. I found it in a store here. Interesting combination of flavors. Have you ever had salted black licorice?

My wife returns soon … and the house will be clean … including the bathrooms.

Our handbell choir is playing an interesting piece soon at our Ash Wednesday service. To me, it’s a fitting sound for the start of Lent. For those who want to listen, look for the Listen button near the sheet music image. Click here.

There will be a light post ready for your Saturday morning.

President Donald Trump continual attacks on the press continues to be a sign that he is afraid of the truth.

Question: Why does President Trump spend so much time watching Fake News?

I hate to inform people, but like him or not, Donald Trump was dutifully elected and is our president.

A local congressman had an editorial for proposing dismantling the U.S. Dept. of Education. I say why stop there – re-organize the whole damn government structure!

Many seemed to enjoy the Traveling Wilburys last week, so here’s another one from them to send you into the weekend. In the words of Garrison Keillor, Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

  1. Ahh, enjoy your week of solitude. They’re such a rare treat, aren’t they? Not that we don’t adore our loved ones–we do. But sometimes we all need a little ‘me’ time. Oh, and since you’re cleaning houses, feel free to stop by and do ours.

  2. Already been a year? Seems like it wasn’t so long ago you were playing bachelor! And she left you on your birthday no less! Hmmm…
Thanks so much for the second Traveling Wilburys! Love that one too!
Now get that house spick and span for Mrs. Right Angle!

  3. Dale,
Amazing you remember my bachelor week 2016! … She knew I would let her go on my birthday while also giving her a hard time about it. It seems the ladies are having a good time this year … and good weather!

  4. I still love the Wilburys! A home alone birthday Frank? Now that could be a fabulous thing or a very flat experience – just depends on how you do it. Any how, Happy Birthday for the day and may there be many more with Right right by your side or not too far away 🙂 The planets discovery is fascinating isn’t it. The universe is a very big and diverse place!

    • Pauline,
Cheers to another who enjoyed repeating the Wilburys!

The actual birthday was fine. Several good friends were unavailable for various reasons, so I treated myself to lunch at a Brazilian steakhouse. … then that evening I was with the ballroom crowd (and never telling anyone it was my birthday) … and yes, I had a good time.

  5. As usual, I appreciate your humor, info and music. Happy Birthday–and enjoy your belated celebration when your wife gets back! About the tire guy–yeah, way too much time on his hands. But, then again, I watched the whole thing?! Have a good weekend.

  6. Travelling Wilburys good! Should have more in my itunes. Trump, well yeah – he’s elected, so you have to put up with the moron. But I guess it’s fair enough to demonstrate on particular issues. Dancing while your wife is away – my partner just had a 3 day meltdown because an old couple invited me to a jazz dance evening and I said yes. Your wife sounds like an angel!

    • Turnips,
Welcome first-time commenter … many thanks for stopping by!

There is no question that I don’t support Trump, but the physical record here shows that I am a moderate independent. A friend tells me that I’m the only person he knows with that bend because all his other friends are in one camp or the other.

She knows I will go out … but she also knows I go were we know people. When she returns I’ll tell her where I went … on the other hand, I know she’s having a good time cruising with her sister and friends.

  7. Oh, I am sorry you had to spend your birthday on your own! But it is good to be keeping busy – Trump continues to make a laughing stock of himself as a president, my husband watches all his blunders and it seems to be a way for him to unwind with laughter, much like a sitcom might. That is a sad state of affairs indeed. Dutifully elected or not, he is making a fool of America. Well, I like your stance on the matter about it all. Good to read this post 🙂

    • Lenora,
My birthday was different … but I made the best of it. I also realize the importance the cruise with the ladies is important to my wife. But it is also a chance to hassle her about it.

Political tensions are very high here. I’ve never seen anything like this. Yesterday I saw an approval poll of President Trump by political party … 86% in his party, 6% in the opposition party. In those results I also see a lot of blame on both sides. I have the feeling that it’s going to get worse.

      • Yes it is good to make the most of things. Hahaha, to ‘hassle’ her! It’s good you both understand each other. I have a feeling it will get worse too. I feel like Trump gets all his information from Fox news – I thought presidents get their information from the CIA or whatever intelligence forces they have, but the way he runs things just all seems out of whack.

  8. It sounds like you’ve had a good week, and I hope Ms. Angle enjoyed her cruise.
I enjoyed the article on laundry chutes. I never really thought of them as being sort of liminal spaces.

It seems dt gets most of his news from TV. Sad.

I enjoyed the Traveling Wiburys. I think my husband has one of their albums.

    • Merril,
My wife has texted me when she was in a port, so it seems the weather has been outstanding and they are having a great time – which (along with safety) is the most important thing … but I can’t pass up on the opportunity to hassle regarding choosing a cruise over my birthday. Meanwhile, the Trump presidency continues to be weird on multiple levels and it seems there is no end in sight. Glad you enjoyed the Traveling Wilburys!

  9. No splats, but a breeze from “Open-Minded Man Tries To Get News From Variety Of Facebook Friends” as I was listening to William Goss’s lovely Lenten bell choir piece ‘For God So Loved The World’ and reading in this morning’s Cincinnati Enquirer that yesterday Sen. Mitch McConnell told protesters outside the Hotel Covington that “The fundamental problem is, {you’re} having a hard time getting over the election,” to which a woman said to the senator (and was escorted out seconds later by police): “Senator, we’re not protesting the election, we’re protesting right-to-work. We’re protesting losing our health care. We’re protesting election interference in {the} White House. We’re protesting the fact that to get in front of your, we have to pay dollars.”

  10. A belated Happy Birthday to you, Frank. 🙂 I don’t think I’d ever get the wrong impression about you even though we haven’t met. I enjoyed the story about laundry chutes. We have one in the house in NE Ohio. I didn’t use it, but M the Younger (youngest son) and his wife use it all the time (they’re renting the house from us).

    • Robin,
Many thanks for the birthday wishes. I turned 64 last Friday, so I celebrated here with a post about 64.

Glad you enjoyed the laundry chutes article. Interestingly, you aren’t the only person commenting on that article! Thanks for sharing your touch to the story. 🙂

  11. The handbell piece is beautiful! I love that particular selection. I’m sure your wife is home by now and grateful you cleaned the bathrooms! I’m a little jealous (no, I’m VERY jealous) at a week or so all to yourself. I have a lot of freedom in my life and schedule, but I’d love to experience a week with nothing to do but whatever I want to do!

    • Debra,
Thanks for taking the time to listen to the handbell piece. Our director does a great job of selecting interesting pieces to play.

Yes – doing whatever you want is a plus … but don’t forget the second half – whenever you want.

Meanwhile, my wife safely returned home and had a wonderful time.
