On Exploring Clear Skies

The sky is filled with stars, invisible by day. (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

Look at the sky. We are not alone. The whole universe is friendly to us and conspires only to give the best to those who dream and work. (A. P. J. Abdul Kalam)

Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach some of us more than we can ever learn from books. (John Lubbock)

We are a nation of communities… a brilliant diversity spread like stars, like a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful sky. (George H. W. Bush)

Whether as part of our natural surrounding or from the creativity of a fellow human, our world has so much to offer – thus the purpose of the Explore series is to give us an appreciative taste of those offerings. To me, the sky is a wonderful place to activate this series.

On Exploring Clouds and Skies

The sky is the daily bread for the eyes. (Ralph Waldo Emerson, Poet)

I’m an introvert… I love being by myself, love being outdoors, love taking a long walk with my dogs and looking at the trees, flowers, the sky. (Audrey Hepburn, Actor)

The bluebird carries the sky on his back. (Henry David Thoreau, Author)

Gray skies are just clouds passing over. (Duke Ellington, Musician)

The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web. (Pablo Picasso, Artist)

Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility. (St. Augustine, Theologian)

The way of fortune is like the Milky Way in the sky; which is a number of small stars, not seen asunder, but giving light together: so it is a number of little and scarce discerned virtues, or rather faculties and customs, that make men fortunate. (Francis Bacon, Philosopher)

Once a month the sky falls on my head, I come to and I see another movie I want to make. (Stephen Spielberg, Movie Director)

Clouds do not really look like camels or sailing ships or castles in the sky. They are simply a natural process at work. So too, perhaps, are our lives. (Roger Ebert, Movie Critic)

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky. (Rabindranath Tagore, Poet)

Before we invented civilization our ancestors lived mainly in the open out under the sky. Before we devised artificial lights and atmospheric pollution and modern forms of nocturnal entertainment we watched the stars. There were practical calendar reasons of course but there was more to it than that. Even today the most jaded city dweller can be unexpectedly moved upon encountering a clear night sky studded with thousands of twinkling stars. When it happens to me after all these years it still takes my breath away. (Carl Sagan, Astronomer)

On a Rotting Monday

I kept busy this weekend. How was yours?

Much of the weekend focused around my sister-in-law’s visit; however, we were able to dance Friday night. The final handbell ring of the our season went well on Sunday, plus I enjoyed watching the TPC golf tournament on Sunday.

Meanwhile, another week is upon us, so let’s start it with some time lapse video – but no sky, clouds, or stars this time – just tomatoes (Thank you Time Lapse Guys). Enjoy and have a good week.

On a Lapse for Monday

Another weekend is in the books. With us in an unusual weather pattern, we finally got some needed rain as drops fell most of Saturday. Otherwise, we (mainly I) had a lousy night on the ballroom floor Friday night. Saturday night we enjoyed dinner with friends.

Sunday morning we participated in a 5K walk that served as a fund-raising event for a foundation that supports police K-9 units throughout the area. The weather was great, the walk was in Cincinnati’s main cemetery that is very much a park setting, and all for a good cause.

How was your weekend?

To start your week, sit back and enjoy this time-lapse film. Thanks Izaak for finding this. Have a great week!
