On Politics
2012 is the first national (US) campaign with wide use of Twitter.

For anyone who didn’t hear Ireland’s President Michael Higgs rant against the Tea Party, click here because it’s pretty good!

I am sadden to see that Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) will not seek re-election. Meanwhile, her statement says a lot about why Congress has such a low approval rating.

Unfortunately, I do not realistically expect the partisanship of recent years in the Senate to change over the short term, so at this stage of my tenure in public service, I have concluded that I am not prepared to commit myself to an additional six years in the Senate, which is what a fourth term would entail. … As I have long said, what motivates me is producing results for those who have entrusted me to be their voice and their champion, and I am filled with that same sense of responsibility today as I was on my first day in the Maine House of Representatives. I do find it frustrating, however, that an atmosphere of polarization and ‘my way or the highway’ ideologies [have] become pervasive in campaigns and in our governing institutions.

A few questions about the Iranian nuclear situation: How will we get want we want? How does Iran get want they want? How are each of these accomplished?

With the recent news about North Korea and their nuclear program, the basis the same three questions above are also applicable to that situation.

A Day in Pompeii exhibit has arrived in Cincinnati, thus opens soon. Because the exhibit has only four stops in the US, we hope to visit. Meanwhile, for anyone interested, here is a photo collection and a link to the Cincinnati Museum Center.

Earlier this week we encountered leap day – but the Leap Year celebration is not over because we add a leap second to the atomic clock on June 30.

The Vatican recently announced displaying interesting documents as Galileo’s trial and Martin Luther’s excommunication. Here’s a story.

Although spam is a pain, it can be fun. Here’s the last line of one I recently received: I had been more than amazed with the post On Roots A Frank Angle I just wanted to say thanks and well done. Kind regards, Horny

February 2012 established a new personal best for views by a wide margin – a 37.6% increase from the previous high. Thank you everyone!

To send you into the weekend, let Dean Martin give you a 3-minute tour of Italy. Have a good weekend everyone, and in the words of Garrison Keillor, Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

  1. Now why can’t newscasts be more like this?? I love your links, and am now deeply pondering the Historian’s Look at Europe.

Very odd about the comments going into Spam! Only discovered my spam folder w/ your comments today.

    • Twixt,
Glad you enjoyed this. As you could tell by the title, this is a regular Friday feature. The article about European history was very good!

The spam thing has been happening to me for at least the past month. Of course why it took me so long to mention it on a post is beyond me. Thanks for commenting and visiting.

  2. It is sad to see the Senator leave, but she is doing the right thing. Look at it like this. President Teddy Roosevelt quipped something to the effect: “When there is a roll call in the US Senate, Senators do not know whether to say Present or Not Guilty.” She sees the wreck coming. We need a TR to coral this unruly crowd in Congress. She would make a great President. That Congress still gets a 8% approval rating is now a direct measurement of the clueless in our society.

Well said. Keep in mind that not only to we give Congress a low approval rating, but we also re-elect our reps = meaning my rep is fine, it’s the others who miss the boat. Thanks for commenting.

  3. I loved all your links. The BBC interactive ocean trench is pretty cool! And I would love to find out if we’re going to have the Visiting Pompeii exhibit on the west coast. That would be a great one to visit! I’ll keep checking the Spam!! Debra

After re-examining those 5 headlines, it’s tough for me to pick a fav because each cracks me up in a different way. Oh well … Enjoy your weekend and thanks for commenting.

  4. Okay.. I have a short comment today because I am too shocked at this Chinese TV Show Cancelled after Drawing only 180 Million Viewers” WHAT?! Isn’t that what they want.. ratings

    • Kay,
Oh no … did you get suckered into the satire … It’s China – where a rating of 180 million isn’t much of a rating. 🙂 BTW – I hope you watched the video as you came to mind when I picked it. Thanks for commenting and have a great weekend.

  5. Hi,
I just lost it when I read:
“Jury Selection Proving Difficult in Trial of The Jury Killer”
    Hmm I wonder why? 😀

I agree, some of the spam we get is really funny, others ridiculous, I will certainly look at my spam more often in case your comment has gone in their.

That is fantastic a 37.6% increase, good on you. 😀

    • Mags,
Great choice on the jury selection headline. Regarding spam, I’ve had others that I wanted to use, but would forget to keep it until used. At least this time I remember! Meanwhile, have a good weekend and thanks for visiting.

  6. That Ms Snowe is saying what they all should be thinking and whichever party a person adheres to (I have none being a foreigner) there is an atmosphere of them or us. The whole country is dividing with very little real thought as to why. There is a nasty mean spirited little war going on in American politics and all the world sees is that. Why is it like this here? c

  7. I am so impressed by your Spam!!! Mine usually involve “Senior People Meet” (AH!) or the fact the user found a tremendous amount of wisdom in my words (quite odd for a photo webcomic about beagles) and wants me to link to their site which promises to make me rich or enlarge an appendage I don’t have.

I have a great amount of respect for Senator Snowe, and find it revealing that the good ones can no longer stay in the system.

    • Beagz,
OMG .. I’m still laughing at “enlarge the appendage I don’t have” … it just cracks me up. Most of my spam is what it is, but I glance through them looking for a good line. I found “Kind Regards, Horny” to be so darn funny.

In terms of Senator Snowe, put her words together with others as Senator Alexander (R-TN), the picture becomes more clear. Oh well … thanks for visiting.

He wouldn’t let go – thus a sign of his conviction. I agree about that trait being uncommon at that level, but being from a different country, he didn’t have anything to lose – the speak-your-mind approach and then leave. It would be interested to hear/read what the reaction in Ireland about what their leader’s actions. Thanks for visiting and commenting.

  8. Olympia Snowe was an honorable senator. But she was expected to vote against her own thoughts and instincts about the issues. She was the ONLY REPUBLICAN woman to vote against the Blunt Amendment — to allow employers to deny healthcare for any moral or religious purpose.

She’s an honorable woman. Of course she got out.

I’m right with you. Some have said maybe she should have stayed to fight the good fight, and I understand that, but the current politics must have worn her down – thus out. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  9. I hope your weekend was a good one Frank, I’m still trying to play catch-up from a solid week of flu-butt-kicking.

And by the way…I found you in my spam box. You were hanging out there with gratissexdating.

Glad to hear that I was in good company in the spam folder, but bummer that the flu effects still have you down. Then again, I sense that you are on the upswing. Hope this week brings you continued improvement. Thanks for visiting.

      • Definitely on the upswing Frank! By the way….are you Canadian? The Canadians tend to fill my spam folder….mostly with very helpful information and concern about the functions of my penis… I haven’t the heart to tell them that I don’t actually have one….since they’re so concerned and all.

  10. “An ocean trench”. I always wondered where the fish went to fight their battles…. 😀
I wouldn’t laugh TOO hard about that Onion headline on the US robot. Even here in rural Ohio, there are precious few Caterpillar heavy digging gear, and a HECK of a lot from Komatsu Industries in Japan.
And I just heard that Pat Robertson has come out for the legalization of marijuana. Mark this day in your calendar, my friend – I’m speechless! 😉

    • John,
Interesting that you mention Pat Robertson because as you will see, his comments about the recent tornadoes earned him a Dolt of the Year nomination. Meanwhile, I’m sure fighting fish battles in the trenches are legendary. Thanks for checking in!
